Fighting Game Central

Over the past few years my fighting game obsession as a child has turned into me *attempting* to play every single fighting game ever made. I feel like a fighting game historian, ha. This has brought me to some lesser known titles like Kaiser Knuckle, Matrimelee, Waku Waku 7, all the way to weird titles like Blood Warrior. Seriously what even is that game lol. I have come to the conclusion that there are a LOT of really great and worthwhile titles throughout history since Street Fighter II. A lot of my favorites are usually polarizing titles. Here are a few I really love and adore, for those who want to try out some slept on, often even hated on, and sometimes obscure fighting games that I think deserve a shot!

Tuff E Nuff
SF EX 3 (God tier)
Melty Blood Type Lumina
Sengoku Basara X
Hokotu no Ken
Street Fighter X Tekken
Power Rangers The Fighting Edition
TMNT Tournament Fighters
Saturday Night Slam Masters
King of Fighters Maximum Impact Regulation A (God tier)
Eternal Champions
Neo Geo Battle Colosseum
SvC Chaos
Tatsunoko vs Capcom
KoF Neowave
Project Justice
Star Gladiator 2
Kizuna Encounter
World Heroes Perfect
Evil Zone
Last Bronx
Fighting EX Layer
Arcana Hearts
Bloody Roar 4

bonus: beat em ups

The Bouncer
Godhand
Alien vs Predator (Capcom)
The Punisher (Capcom)
Captain Commando
Cadillac's & Dinosaurs
The Takeover
Urban Reign

Do endlessly (not auto) scrolling (cornerless) and nonscrolling (single-screen) arenas have meaningful gameplay implications in a traditional 2D fighting game?

I'd say so, but they are rarely in 2D games; infinite stages can be found in some 3D games like Tekken.

If the stage is infinite, of course corner specific combos would be inaccessible. The games may also be more defensive/zoning-oriented without worrying about being stuck in a corner.

Single-screen, on the other hand, would prevent some midscreen combos from working properly due to the limited space. An example of what this would affect would be Makoto's SA2 stun combo in 3S, which requires slightly more than a full screen to allow a dash fukiage to connect.

well yea corners are often extremely important in adding depth to fighting games since they often provide opportunities for mix-ups or extended combos, so removing them also takes that away

nonscrolling not as much, it just means the screen is likely smaller so more corner opportunities happen, which impacts the dynamics of the game depending on its mechanics and characters

I have a unique background and reason that made me dive this deep lol. My mom managed the Tower Records in Downtown Nashville in the 90's and would always bring me home fighting games because my dad is a Grandmaster in Moo Duk Kwon (9th dan) and was actively training me as well. I also became a black belt at 19, but stopped at 1st dan and began skateboarding. I am 34 now and have not practiced in about 10 years, although once I am finished with school I plan to start practicing again. I am about to graduate with a BS in Software Engineering and I am currently designing my own beat em up that has fighting game style boss levels. It is a very ambitious project and I can't reveal some of the cooler things about the story mode and online modes, but I am very excited for the project and have begun the process of building a team of programmers, artists, musicians, marketers, etc. My goals are lofty, and I am inspired by Akira Toriyama, Yoshitaka Amano, Hideo Kojima, Testuya Nomura, Yoji Shinkawa, to name a few.

This might be the ugliest game ever made. I can't believe it was touted as a Switch launch title.

It sometimes looks okay-ish on screenshots, but these hyper-detailed sprites having the same frames as the original game is just abysmal. The statue in the background of Sagat's stage still has an ugly white photoshop border!!!
The sound effects suck too, blocking sounds like you're slapping a piece of paper.

The entire game just kind of looks to me like a really ambitious mid-2000s Newgrounds fan remake of SF2.

Yes, Unfortunately, the vast majority of remakes fall into this category, killing the original art style and replacing it with a worse style.

Even more annoying that it's not even a remake or whatever, it's just a literal reskin of Super 2 Turbo, but sold at full price.
The gameplay is still excellent, but everything else regarding the presentation is just super combo'd away lol

Full price and just a makeover of the Super combo...
Wow, what a load of rubbish to the consumer 😭

For new fighting games, I've been in between Tekken 8 (despite the drama) and Street Fighter 6. I can say that Street Fighter 6 is a lot more fun to get into than Tekken 8 in regards to casual players.

For oldies: Capcom Vs. SNK 2 (DC) and Bloody Roar (PS1). I really do hope someone drops a Phoenix Down on Bloody Roar. Whether a reboot or a remaster, doesn't matter. That game has been slept on for decades. There's so much under the surface of this edgy Animorphs fighter. More people should know about it. Plus the OST slaps.
As a 90's kid, i couldn't agree more. I miss Bloody roar 2
