Which games made you realize there's hope in a genre you hate?

I personally dislike FPS games because the most popular examples have elements that don't appeal to me (be it linear corridors or unintuitive puzzles).

One day I found this gem for sale on the PSN and that's when I discovered what I was missing: sandbox and side quests.

I still avoid FPS games today, but the feeling that genre isn't entirely bad has stayed with me.

And you? 🫵

I used to think that I hated puzzle games, then Puzzle Agent entered my life.

Turns out that you can really enjoy something if doing said something involves wasting tons of taxpayers' money every step of the way xD

Code Vein, people say it sucks because it isn't as hard as other souls-likes... which is the reason i actually enjoyed it lmao, after that one i actually thought "Huh, i may actually not dislike the genre that much..." i still think i'd rather complete the Hinterlands in Dragon Age Inquisition (very tedious lol) than play a Souls-like lmao.

I also normally dislike FPS games online but CoD Black Ops 6 got me in online mode and I still love it. Last CoD I played online was Advanced Warfare way back when. I have to renew my ps plus to play again but if you ever go online and see Lady_Luciano, that’s me :)

I used to hate jrpgs with a passion, then I played Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga (can that be called a jrpg?) and realized there might be something for me in there.

I've been thinking of getting into Earthbound, but I never got used to its combat system.
JRPG usually refers to RPG made in Japan, normally the turn-based ones but i think that Action and Tactical can count too

Mario games of any genre are usually great entry points.

Wow! You took a while to get back, huh?

That's fair, lol.

I enjoy puzzle games, but most of them just give me the impression of being distractions rather than actual games (I probably have an example that I finished, but I can't think of one right now).

Subnautica made me realize that even pure survival can be fun at times.
Then I found out there was an actual story, but oh well, still fun.

Dark Souls could be considered a RPG? i thought that was something like a Hack and Slash
@BrawlMan check this out lol.

From what I know of Subnautica, it's a fun game at first, but most people give up when survival mechanics demand more from the player.

We wanted to imagine ourselves fans of driving games, because we enjoyed Gran Turismo so much, but every foray into that genre has since disappointed us.
It turns out Gran Turismo was the exception, but we discovered it before the rule.

You said the last CoD you played before BO6 was MW1, lol.

Ohhhhh LOL I thought you were talking about the forum hahaha oops.

Well I have played CoD games in between, just the campaigns though, not online so this is just a return to online.

I quit online after AW cuz I was tired of “LOL GO MAKE ME A SANDWICH” and all that dumb shit. It doesn’t hurt my feelings it just gets old. I just want to play and have fun with people, not be reminded there are plenty of fellas out there who have no idea how to speak to females :loldog

Endless Fables: Dark Moore gave me this impression, i like playing lots of point & click puzzle games & yeah most of them can flow very fast if you know the genre, i usually play them as a palette cleanser.

It seems that nowadays GT has stopped being a simulator and has become a simcade.

A funny term to describe the situation :loldog

Agreed, we haven't enjoyed the series much since the fifth entry. But even that one benefited immeasurably from the novelty of Ferrari.
There's a wonderful mod of GT4 on the repo here, it refreshes the experience.
