Classic Sonic Thread

most of my playtime with the classic games was on that DS collection I forgot the name of and so now whenever I play on emulators that actually get the sound right it weirds me out because I'm so used to the incorrect audio on the DS emulator

I dont think this fangame is as good as people say (and yes I played it up to panic puppet act 1 cuz I couldnt beat its boss)

The DS collection was good for having Sonic 3 standalone but the resolution and lag killed it...

I may play that fangame but they removed what made 3D Blast... well, 3D Blast.

I like the classic Sonic games, mostly, but nowadays I don't really think I could play their vanilla versions anymore.

I really prefer playing versions like Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute, and Sonic 3 A.I.R.. Basically decomps with mods and widescreen support. Even spent last afternoon setting them all up on my Retroid. Between those and Sonic Mania on it, I'm very happy with my end result.

After seeing the love and attention that got put into that fan remake of Sonic Triple Trouble, I home someone does the same for Sonic Chaos, that one was always my favorite of the 8-bit Sonic games.

I still think to this day that Sonic 1 should've given a way to continue where you're left.

Sure, the game is short but this is why score exists. Sonic 2 is considerably longer yet still didn't get any form of saving so even if you get Super Sonic you're condemned to lose him after finishing the last boss.

Wide-screen, Tails with flight and Knuckles are pretty much why they replaced the original Genesis games.

Nah sega wanted to compete with nintendo, had they stuck to 2d sonic as well as what the saturn was a beast at (2d games) it's entirely possible that the saturn would have done far better than it did, but sega of america and sega of japan had a tug of war going on at the time and it basically killed the company, ironically the same thing is happening at sony atm.

I'm sorry but I don't fully get what this had to do with what I said about continues in Sonic games.

And sorry for breaking it for you but in an era where 3D came in and was the newest fad making a 2D game, as beautiful and smooth as it could be, would be shooting in their own foot.

Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot would've been the most played games while a 2D one would've been good but people would've asked for a proper 3D entry.

And to be perfectly honest X-treme didn't look that good either because of the fisheye and gameplay.

PS: Yes, Donkey Kong Country and Yoshi's Island existed but they were also impressive games for the SNES (which was still an impressive console). The Genesis had Ristar but it was also a niche game.

I quoted you on why sonic shifted to 3d and was saying the shift was due to chasing the 3d trend, not due to anything in sonic 3& knuckles.

As for 2d vs 3d i disagree, 2d was still massively popular at the time and did sell well still, while i don't think that sega should not have made any 3d games, their reliance on 3d is what weakened them as the saturn was a 2d powerhouse, not a 3d one.

There is no reason sega couldn't have had a team working on a 2d sonic while working on a 3d game in the background, what they did was devoted tons of resources to sonic x-treme and and other 3d projects and ended up with only sonic R on the saturn.

Fads do not really work for success in gaming in general as eventually fads fade, or for that matter the success of symphony of the night, my point is that sega went too hard into the 3d space and ironically what kept them afloat in the saturn era was 2d and 2.5d games, mostly in japan because like sony, sega had a tendency to ignore 2d games being released in the west in the early years of the era (sony still has a problem with this occasionally, like their stance on "cutesy or animeish" games in the ps3 era).

I consider that SotN was the exception on the PSX.

Sony in the west pushed much more 3D than in Japan I think.

The Sega Saturn couldn't have survived because it lacked many third party masterpieces (same with Nintendo that only got saved by Rare along masterful Nintendo EAD games).

(sony still has a problem with this occasionally, like their stance on "cutesy or animeish" games in the ps3 era).
Agreed, Sony is having their weird phase by telling they got no IPs (lie).

I disagree that the sega saturn was doomed to fail, what eventually killed saturn was sega itself and it's infighting between the 2 branches that they'd never recover from, the saturn did much better in japan than in the us because of it's strong 2.5 and 2d catelogue, but the reluctance in the early years of the saturn to port them to the us is what i think finally killed the saturn.

Now don't get me wrong, sega wouldn't beat sony in the 32 bit era, that was lightening in a bottle, but they would have likely done ok, probably on par with the gamecube in sales (vs ps2 i mean) instead of the disaster that the saturn eventually became.

Wait, those are a thing?
I've been meaning to replay the trilogy and this is really eye-opening. Thanks so much!

I'd love if someone game the treatment for 3D Blast, Spinball and Chaotix.

It would be rad to be able to play 3DB with the possibility of changing music on the get go.

Sonic 3 A.I.R. and sonic 3 Complete are both better than sonic 3 & knuckles, which of those 2 you think is better varies between people, i prefer complete for example.

S3C is arguably better for devices that can only run emulators (like a linker for the DS or a dedicated emulation machine).

S3AIR is great on PC and more advanced mods that the Genesis couldn't have handled. It's good that both are present.

Sonic 3&K vanilla is still a competent game (and doesn't really suffer too much from the later levels being a difficulty spike).

As for romhacks I think I'll always go by S3C, Sonic Classic Heroes for 1&2 and 3D Blast DX. There's no significant Knuckles Chaotix, Mean Bean Machine nor Spinball hacks yet...

The biggest problem i have with A.I.R. is the lack of a prototype stage planning layout, aka flying battery after carnival night for example.

Honestly, while I understand that FBZ happening between CNZ and ICZ was the planned order (almost a Director's Cut of 3&K) I think that it's not that big of a deal, I tried that once but I think that the difficulty curve of the game makes it better with the release order.

On the other hand I prefer when Big Arms and the harder Sonic 3 Standalone Launch Base Zone are an option to make it feels more like a "Disc 1 climax" before entering the & Knuckles half of the game.

I generally prefer Sonic 3 AIR, since I really do like the widescreen support, and it does have the drop dash, which nowadays I almost always want in my 2D Sonic lol.

Though I do have Sonic 3 Complete on my little retro emulation handheld. Sonic 3&K is just a fun time all around.

Widescreen and drop dash are perfect additions to the classic series indeed.

For some reason I could never figure out the drop dash in Mania, so I don't really care if a game has it or not. I'm more concerned over having a peel-out, which I couldn't find the option for in A.I.R.

In order to use the peel-out you have to unlock 13 achievements first.

They did similar with the drop dash, but that one was at least 7 achievements.

I just messed with the config file to brute force it unlocked. Though I imagine you can just get a full save and that'd be easier.

I'll be honest: I hate options being locked behind achievements.

Sure, achievements are fun to see in a sourceport of a retro game but please let your users enjoy their game the way they want because most already have finished the original. Especially if you've installed the game again.

S3C let you use any options as crazy as you wanted it to be.

PS: If it was something cosmetic like Sonic 1&2&CD Sonic sprite and Knuckles & Tails it would be fine to me.

Has anyone mentioned the Sonic Classic Heroes romhack yet?
It's personally my favourite way to play through the first two Sonic games, because for me, it fixes everything wrong with those games. Most notably, it adds a save feature, gives the chaos emeralds a reason to exist on the first Sonic game (other than a slightly different ending), and gives all of the characters their Sonic 3 abilities as well as letting you swap between them on the fly.

As for Sonic AIR.
Meh... it could be better. Sure it's got widescreen and mod support, but that's about it. And I feel like that widescreen could be added to a romhack if someone hasn't already (there's certainly an emulator that'd support it).
As for the mod support, from what I could tell, there weren't any worthwhile mods finished yet. You'd think someone would've added in proper co-op support, so you can go through the entire campaign in splitscreen, mixing and matching any two characters, or perhaps even adding in the levels from Sonic 1, 2, and maybe even CD and Chaotix. All for the ultimate Sonic experience!
But nope, it's just Sonic 3 with widescreen and mod support.
I personally think Sonic Delta and Sonic 3 Complete are both better. They also don't require you to complete the game to unlock basic moves like the peel-out. ¬¬

Adding a real 3 player MP mode and the Chaotix as bonus characters (as well as the ring line from that game).

The fact you could play as a single character to keep the vanilla feel is selling it to me if I wanted to do a non-team playthrough.

Well, for emulators it would require much more work and you won't have the smooth rotations not advanced stuff. I don't recall any emulator supporting true widescreen as far as I can.

I think that the main issue is that there are custom S3C that you can only get from one site.
