Classic Sonic Thread

Sonic Mega Collection on GameCube is AWESOME! It has all the classic Sega Genesis Sonic games on top of some bonus titles like Flicky and Ristar! The best part though was all the extra goodies like artwork and comics! The menu music is really nostalgic too! I could listen to that stuff for HOURS!!! Right up there with the menu theme from Smash Melee!
It truly was a fantastic collection for its time and shows how good we had it, these days they'll charge you 60 bucks for a collection of 3 games and they barely work.

Even if they couldn't add Archie Sonic to the new collection, they could at least toss in some IDW comics.

Oh yeah? I had Gems Collection, and it SUCKED. 😡
I liked Gems. Sonic The Fighters was fun. :ROFLMAO:
Gems Collection is good, but there's no denying that the western versions got the short end of the stick, as the japan PS2 version has Bonanza Bros and all 3 Streets Of Rage games.

Also the fact that the unlockable gallery had Knuckles Chaotix art and yet we didn't get Knuckles Chaotix was also a let down.

No Knuckles Chaotix is a crime. That game seriously deserves a re-release, it's visually stunning as far as 2D games go and probably the most polished title on the 32X.

apologies for newbie necrobump, but i've been playing through the franchise and found myself enjoying SAd1 and 2 the most! i'm currently struggling through CD (i'm quite awful at 2d/classic sonic) despite it's innovative movement and time travel mechanics, but have otherwise really loved 06 and heroes :D
i'm experiencing a huge hyperfixation on the series and really enjoy spending time in SAd1 in particular. i really hope the boost era ends soon >< i miss explorable levels!

This is a great point I'd love to bring up to others in this thread: What do you guys think of boosting in general? Do you like it?

I remember, when Sonic Unleashed came out, a lot of people on Sonic forums I was on didn't like it as a gameplay mechanic, but I've always been pretty ambivalent about it. I'm not really a fan of the boost games in general – I also didn't like Frontiers, for what it's worth – but I know a lot of people are.

I have played them through this Genesis collection for the ps3. I picked it up because it’s basically like an emulator with many Sega games in one.

It’s probably similar to the GameCube one mentioned above. It’s also a good way to learn about old games and see their history and artwork.

It had the best unlockables. Some of them were carried over from the PS2 Genesis collection. What was nice about it was you could unlock Phantasy Star 1 and basically play the entire Phantasy Star series in one collection!

I briefly tried Phantasy Star 2, but I didn’t understand it well. I’ll have to give it another shot when I have more time. The museum part of the game said that the fourth edition sold for the equivalent of $100 when it came out.

thread for discussion regarding the Sonic games on original SEGA hardware (1-3, Knuckles, CD, Chaotix, Adventure 1-2, etc.)
I thought that SA1 was the first "Modern Sonic game" as Sega said but as usual they are never consistent with their franchise's branding such as having Sonic's Modern design used as the icon for Sonic 1 and 2 mobile before Whitehead's remaster (they saw Sonic as only one character before Generations).

It's good to tell that it's about Sega hardware Sonic games.

I could tell that romhacking basically made me go back to love Classic Sonic (as well as the Genesis collections).

it's really repetitive, might want to try following some maps for the dungeons too. Those things are big confusing mazes. Also you need to go back home every now n then after making some progress in the story to get more party members to join you. Also for the love of god, do not level anybody to 99! TRUST ME.

Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are what i consider to be "Adventure Sonic" even if their designs are different from each other. They play similarly enough. It's like a forgotten middle child to Sega. Weird that they lump in Sonic Heroes or Sonic Unleashed with the Adventure games when they have nothing in common with them. It's also weird that they refer to Adventure Sonic as Modern Sonic. If anything Adventure Sonic has more in common with Sonic X.

Sega and the Sonic Team are weird with their mascot, no wonder why the guy has an identity crisis.

I'd even argue that in SA1 his design still kept elements from the Genesis era (since the game was the result of elements from the Saturn era) whereas SA2 looks closer to what Modern Sonic is all about. SADX's model being redesigned to look closer.

After all he's still in the 90's in that game (even if he transitioned to 3D). Mario nor Pac-Man had separate characters according to the era (even if 3D Pac-Man looks drastically different).

Megaman and X are explicitly separate character ever since day one whereas the Adventure game are implicitly set after the Genesis episodes.

But we won't debate, Forces already destroyed the lore regarding each Sonic despite Generations being a simple anniversary game with time travel shenanigans.

Heroes I can understand with the link to Adventure 2 it had but Unleashed looks like its own thing (even if it's called World Adventure in Japan).

Anyway: Sonic Jam's Sonic World was a nice side mode and I absolutely love his low poly model from that era.

The Tornado stages in SA1 use the Saturn model for Sonic which was just a 3D version of classic Sonic so yeah that makes total sense. It was originally going to be a Saturn game too. Some flashbacks even have the unused stage from the game's development and it looks totally different. There's mods for the SADX version now that bring it closer to the Saturn style. Pretty cool stuff!

Mario slimmed down a lot by the time we got to the 6th and 7th gen consoles. The best example is in Super Mario 64 DS for the DS, it's a more modern Mario design in the game despite the graphics being more like a PS-One.

Mega Man and X are two different robots. Basically Light built a new robot when he was getting older and wanted to make sure the world would be safe given how technology was advancing. Good thing too because Dr. Wily was doing the same thing building Zero. I don't care if the Power Battles aren't considered canon, they are to me.

And Frontiers retconned it again, with Modern Sonic now very firmly being the older version of Classic Sonic from the same dimension or universe or whatever. What the fuck, SEGA.

Do NOT let this distract you from the fact Sega canonized SONIC BOOM of all fucking things. O.o I can’t even-

@It's Thinking 2: I know that it's an unpopular one but I think Saturn era Sonic is my favourite (having that more modern flair of the Dreamcast while keeping his Genesis essence).
I'd love if we got the early builds of Adventure leaked. The production pics of the game are fascinating.
Yet Mario is still the same guy from Jumpman in Donkey Kong up to Mario Odyssey, Nintendo never tried any tricks like that even if you're right about his look being slightly different since the 6th gen.
Megaman X still confused some because of the roman numerals for the classic titles.

@Gorse: Frontiers is a mixed bag for me narratively speaking, they tried a bit too hard with previous game references and giving an origin story for the Emeralds (when we don't really need to and SA1 already gave us enough infos about the echidna tribe and these gems).

They could've told that Generations caused a split in the timeline where one sequel to 3&K is Sonic 4 Episode 1&2 in one side and Mania in the others so that would've explained it a bit better.

The only Sonic I could consider an entirely different character would probably be 2006 considering it was meant to be a reboot of the franchise for the next gen.

@Yousef: I'd assume they only canonised Sticks as a main canon character and not Boom as a whole because of her popularity. Still weird and out of place imo (instead of giving her a proper cameo or even introduction like how the Chaotix came back in Heroes).

PS: Still a big shame how Blaze is in limbo as well as the Babylon trio.

Having grown up as a Sega kid, Sonic has been an integral part of my gaming journey, both in 8 and 16 bit forms. Sonic 1 came as a pack-in, and Sonic 2 and 3 were no brainers.

I used to rent Sonic CD on occasion, but I never "got it" in the sense it was still convoluted for my little kid brain to understand the nuances of. Now, even though I have more brain mass, I have to say I still don't like it much.

The Saturn was something else. I had it, loved it, but it not having a proper Sonic was terrible; I can't help but feel this helped bury the console even more under the Playstation 1's heel.

I never had a Dreamcast so my contact with 3D Sonic would only come much later, courtesy of emulation and... yeah, sorry, SA1 and 2 are a no from me. Heroes was decent, but it's somewhat telling when I personally had more fun with Sonic Riders - Zero Gravity than it.

Generations was... all right. I liked it, but also felt it was a massive waste of potential. I expected more and more zones to be lovingly recreated via DLC, both in classic and modern form, but shame on my inner child for daring to believe Sega cares.

I'm not sure how far I'm even allowed to go with this little memoir, but suffice to say that, by my reckoning, anything past that that isn't Mania is middling at best (and even regarding Mania I have serious reservations).
