This is our thread to help each other to get some relief from that mental agony of when you miss a game from the good old times, but can't remember its name!!!

To organize it a bit, I think we can agree with some rules for asking and for answering.

Asking: Describe the game as much as possible for you. Mechanics, character design, scenarios, visual style and stuff. It's even better, in case you have searched for it a lot before, to add a little list of titles you already removed from the horizon of possibilities.

Answering: Preferably don't just throw a name and go away. Justify why are you relating the game asked with the title you're suggesting and always add screenshots illustrating it! We know how images are what clicks the "omg that's it!!!" in us.

Have fun!

A memory brought up by @It's Thinking 2 's Bootleg Mac games post:

When I was young, I was playing with a cousin at my grandparents house. He had brought an Oldschool Gameboy with him:

Very good cuz. Right on!

He had a nifty little carrying case for games and I remember going through them thinking "wow, these are neat!" Tried some out, had fun. There was the usual assortment of Tetris, some space shooters or another, Kirby, etc-etc. But I remember one in particular that stood out. It was a Super Mario cartridge! Not just any Mario cartridge, though, but a mysterious one! You see, the game was clearly an unlicensed/bootleg game.

I saw the label and recognized the characters right away: Mario and Luigi. But something was different here... these weren't the friendly illustrated Brothers I was used to seeing! No, instead, gracing the cover of the cart were the likenesses of none-other than Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo! The Mario Bros. from one of my (at the time) favorite movies!
At the time I didn't know any better; games were made about movies all the time. I thought it was in-line with all the RoboCops and Terminators and so on. Clearly I was wrong.

The cart looked something like this:
mockup.jpg

This is a real quick and dirty mock-up of what I remember. Not the actual cart.
In reality the photo of the two was different (it had the two actors standing shoulder-to-shoulder naturally, not superimposed) and the background behind them was white.
But just like in the mock up here there was no title or text or description. Just the photo.

The game itself was janky nonsense. No title screen, no intro, just plop into the game. I'd later come to recognize the assets as It appeared to use the sprite of Mario from Super Mario Land 2
1728409307118.png

But no power-ups, no little Mario sans-Mushroom, just as he is there.
One could jump and run, so there was that. I recall a few baddies (goombas, most likely) But the game only scrolled for a little bit until one reached a wall/cliff. The top of which was juuuuuust higher than Mario could jump so... well, that was the end of it, I assume. We never got past that part and moved onto something else.

Years would go by and I'd mention this to folks around either at school or on the net and no one would have any idea what I was talking about. There's no mention of the cart or game on the web, no one's ever seen the that weird level before, its a mystery.
There's a whole scene of enthusiasts for knock-off/bootleg Nintendo that this also eludes. I am absolutely stumped.
I've actually gotten some sh*t from folks claiming the story and the game are all BS; made-up internet nonsense. To them I say "NAY"!

It was certainly a real thing and not a dream or misremembered instance because on a subsequent visit from that same cousin I had asked about it and he talked about how he traded all his Gameboy stuff for a GameGear citing that game. But the trail goes cold after that. No origin. Nothing.

I have a theory though!
My uncle (his father) was in the tech profession and lived in San Fran. He was always around and wheelin' & Dealin' with the techie-type folks. My guess is that the cart was perhaps a homebrew/ethusist thing he had come across originating from one of his peers or clients.
But that's just a guess.
Who even knows?

So, RGT cohorts, my call unto thee:
Has anyone ever seen or heard of this thing? Or anything similar?

Even if you had made up this story, I love it so much that I wouldn't care. I wish I could give you a lead – I went hunting for something based on that SML2 sprite, but it seemingly got everywhere on GB bootlegs – unfortunately, though, nothing I found matched your description exactly. (The closest thing was Super Mario World 7 – does that ring any bells?) I'm keeping an eye on this thread, because I really want this mystery solved.

not a dream
When I was a kid, I had a dream about receiving three new Gameboy games: Super Mario Land DX, Super Yoshi Land, and Super Peach Land. The cartridges were red, green, and pink, respectively, and all had artwork featuring their title characters (who also starred in each game). I didn't try SMLDX or SPL, but Super Yoshi Land was easily the best game I had ever played – a sidescrolling 2D platformer that was a mix of SML2 and Kirby's Dreamland, with a large Yoshi sprite as the player character. When I woke up, I'd never been more disappointed in my life.

Super Mario 4 or Super Mario 7 maybe?
@Deadgar64 strong suggestions. Really none of this? Shit they have title screen.

I downloaded from a reddit post, once, a folder with tons of bootleg roms, bad dumps, this kind of stuff, and i believe it had a lot of marios for gb. I can't look for it right now, but you should give it a try.

Not a bad idea!

I know the image is merely an exhibit and not areal question but if someone is sincerely unable to tell what that game is, it’s Dig Dug

I'm not entirely sure if Breath of Fire 3 had a fairy village (now I gotta replay it lol) but 4 most definitely did.

There was a Sega MegaDrive game which i played once in house of a relative when i was a kid, it was so cool! i searched almost all mega drive games but to no avail!

What I remember:
It was a kind of dark-fantasy themed platformer with graphics almost in similar style with castlevania bloodlines.
The player should attack enemies with weapon or magic and goes through levels which as far as i remember was side-scrolling, but like castlevania, we could need to go up and down too (by jumping over ledges)...
One notable thing which i remember about (i guess first level) was a giant skull in ground, which we should jump over it and it was always hard to do so! and there was a (green?) river flowing down like acid or something... which we shouldn't fall in it...
Another notable thing was that at start of game, we could choose from Two playable character, one was a warrior-like man which i don't remember much about him... but second was a magician man, and one notable thing about him which i clearly remember, is that whenever leave him to be idle for a while, he would draw something like ship wheel with magical fire in air! it was cool!
this is as much as i remember... thanks in advance.

Checked it right now, certainly a cool game! but doesn't seem to be the one i was talking about... and there seem to be only one playable character. Thanks anyway!

Another thing which i think remember about it was that it supported six-buttons controllers! but maybe i'm wrong, because i have looked every games which supported six-button controllers and not found it...

This one has me stumped. I can't really think of any title that would fit all of your criteria. The closest ones that come to mind would be:
Blades of Vengeance
blades of vengeance.png

and Cadash
cadash.png

but somehow I don't think it's either of those.

Yep, I already checked them both, and neither were the one... Thanks for answering anyway!

Hm... a sports arcade game that I played in the nineties in the bar near my house: a sort of 1 vs 1 Frisbee challenge on a tennis-type court, view from above, with bizarre challengers, each with a special technique. Never found the title in all these years. I underline that it is not Windjammers for Neo Geo, despite being similar. Can you help me? Otherwise, who cares! I will survive anyway. ?

Haven't played the game for a while so not sure if it fits everything in your description but... Shadow Blasters ?

Edit : ok nope, this game has 4 playables characters.

If anyone might be interested :

EDIT 2: Wait, I think I know! Is it Battle Flip Shot on Neo-Geo? It's a Windjammers clone that meets all your criteria!

yes, it wasn't... but thanks for answer, and the game seems to be good too.
As a side note, i'm pretty sure there wasn't samurai or ninja or such...
