After delving into Garuda Arch I came back to mint

I have nothing but love for garuda, but yea I currently only have machines with integrated graphics and on the garuda forums I do see posts about nvidia troubles, but I think any distro would come with nvidia headaches? Is there something mint is doing to make that configuration easier?

I dont think that is I just downloaded the propeitary drivers for it and I had no issues with it

Mint offers a final NVIDIA drivers download independent of the setup, but 100% integrated into the setup process, it is impossible to miss, so it is easier indeed.

I run on all AMD Ryzen 7 735HS + RX7700S, and since November 2024 with the new Linux Mint Release I had nothing but a simple install without any Kernel update to have support for the GPU.
Linux Mint used to have a curated Kernel that would stay behind for stability's sake.
From November 2024 onward all Linux Mint ships with a rolling kernel, so it has way better support for newer GPUs out of the box.

It was harder having this GPU in late 2023 when you would have to update the kernel to bleeding edge (also pretty simple through the Update Manager).

Got a wine question for my linux frens here ^_^

I am burning dreamcast games and don't have windows (obviously) and was wondering would the version of windows affect the success of the burn? I have only gotten 4 discs to work (out of ~18?) I read on dreamcast forums this is supposed to be frustrating, so I just want to rule this out. I would think as long as the emulated windows version recognizes my optical drive, the version of windows won't matter, but I am not someone that really knows hardware I saw many say wine should work, but many said to use XP, but in my experience, only Windows 2000 and NT 4.0 (lol, no idea why I tried different versions but they worked O_o) have worked...

The above is my main question for ya'll, but if you happen to have burned games yourselves (after I rule wine out, I'll ask on the sega forum) I have only been using discjuggler, since cdi images are made with discjuggler. Should I try imgBurn? I also saw that program mentioned...

Well the first question i'd have is if your burning cdi's or gdi's, gdi's cannot be made as it's a proprietary disk format, cdi's is a converted format that makes it work on a normal dreamcast.

Burn at the fastest speed your software allows.
If in doubt verify the CD-R is rated for said speed, but usually the software detects the rating of the CD-R.

Forcing slower speeds is a CURRENT MYTH from OUTDATED INSTRUCTIONS from when CD-R were calibrated for slower speeds, and so did our hardware, two decades ago.

Interesting... I've only used cdrtools and mkisofs on linux and didnt burn anything since years, but maybe check this one it seems to be a viable linux alternative :

With DiscJuggler, I guess you should set Wine's configuration to the latest version of windows the DiscJuggler app was made for, and maybe try to burn slow for the first few times before testing faster.

That's what I thought too! This is why I thought it is also an interesting wine question: a version of windows that existed LONG before this version of discJuggler worked O_o and was my first success. I don't know why but only early windows architecture seems to work here? For what reason?

Also, I burned 100+ CD-R for PSOne, with my mothers Windows PC because it is the only PC in my reach that still has a CD-R Drive, lol it runs on Celeron n3050, it is A SLUUUUUUUG, but it burns FINE using ImgBurn

Have you tried using ImgBurn under your WINE or with Bottles?

Yup, that's the version I'm using. So why would windows NT4.0 (1998 and support ended in 2004) work at all? Now that I think about it, windows 2000 had an unusually long term of support I guess (I'm not sure date of which service pack wine is using, but I assume the last?), so maybe that isn't so surprising it worked, but that came out 2000...

Trying that now that you mentioned it, and I'm a little skeptical because I had to change a setting to make it recognize my drive (SPTI interface instead of ASPI, lol no idea what this windows shit is), while discjuggler pretty much worked otb... But it is burning, so good sign right?

Wine 10.6 lol last was 2010? Well, I can say discjuggler does work in 2025, as I was able to make a few burns work, so it is possible. I'm just not sure what to blame on the reliability: wine, my drive laser, particular cd medium, write speed (like @popckorn mentioned) or just bad luck >_<

My feeling is if the write device is receiving the instructions, it doesn't matter if it is through a wine layer, regardless of the version, so it has to be something else. I just wanted some opinions on that. So you all would also think as long as it is writing, the version of windows of the wine layer doesn't matter? That's kind of what I think. Because there are some versions of windows that won't work at all for discjuggler. And imgBurn seems to only work with an XP layer...

Wine is not an emulator, as they say. If people reported your app working on a winXP *32-bit* prefix then it might just be that your winXP prefix is 64-bit and you got lucky with a NT preset. I got Rocksmith2014 requiring wineASIO 32 bit driver for low latency, for example.

I also don't see how windows API calls would care that much about the particular version of windows and it seems like a lot of micromanagement, and 32 vs 64 should be enough, but I can verify that these two programs do care about the version of windows. For example, imgBurn which I am now trying only runs with XP or XP-64. It hangs on 2000, Vista and some others it will just crash or not recognize the cd drive... It is picky on this.

The process of getting things to run in Wine can be streamlined with Lutris or Bottles if you find all that overwhelming. Just following the install wizard there will usually get things done.

But then again there's also a native and up to date alternative to what you want.

Honestly the thing that will cause most people slipups will be installing the runtimes, lutris makes things so brainlessly easy to setup most of the time.

The way they ordered things up helps a lot. I tested reshade shaders via vkbasalt / gamescope recently and got CRT effects as convincing as those on RetroArch now so I may spend more time on Lutris and the standalone emulators next.
