There is a Linux Mint Debian edition which I would recommend over the standard edition of Linux Mint, but that's because I'm biased being team Fedora and anti Ubuntu.

Yea, maybe that would have been better to try. Someone else here mentioned ubuntu repositories have problems or something, so I guess it fixes that? I don't have anything against ubuntu/mint but frustration with them is what brought me to manjaro years ago which I was much more happy with, but you kind of are limited to the manjaro repo (which I was fine with because everything WORKS). I was thinking of going fedora for something new, but then @Leon here recommended garuda, and it is all I could ever want from a distro ::heart

It's not a matter of snobbishness, ubuntu is imo and alot of users opinions, terrible, mainly due to snaps, i consider ubuntu's flaws to be part of the reason why linux adoption can cause some people to stumble in switching to linux which is why most people when asked, suggest mint these days, if ubuntu stopped trying to force snaps on it's users as well as the user data tracking (yes i know it's optional), i'd have less of a issue with it, most people leaving windows are leaving it for security concerns or getting tired of microsoft's bs, ubuntu is essentially, at least right now, like switching from windows 11 to windows 7, it's still got problems that your probably switching away from windows for in the first place.

Now let me be clear, i do not want to feel this way about ubuntu, ubuntu was my first linux experience and i love it's DE, but it's not possible to talk about ubuntu without looking at it's major flaws for the end user.
Also is that the stat list for just desktop linux, or is that including ubuntu server as well?
I believe ubuntu server is still the number 1 server distro.

Ubuntu has been hyper focused on trying to make SNAPs work and become the main way to use programs on their platform. Sure everyone outside of Ubuntu uses Flatpaks instead and even Mint and Pop OS that are Ubuntu based use Flatpaks over SNAP, but damn are they really trying and have to give them that for not quitting yet and are actually making some decent updates for SNAPs and their features/management.

Also Gabe Newel literally said that piracy came from a service problem and he managed to make Valve even more important in gaming.

I always forget ubuntu has derivatives, i always consider mint and ubuntu a derivative of debian, so when i'm referring to ubuntu, i'm talking about the ubuntu linux desktop operating system, aka the operating system itself not the derivative ubuntu core spins like mint.
No one in their right mind is going to say linux mint is a bad starting or stopping point for a linux user, there's a reason why it's the one usually suggested among linux users for newbies, as it's probably the closest outside of maybe zorin os to windows's GUI and functionality while having the benefits of linux, pop os! would also be great but they really need to finish cosmic and update it before it becomes obsolete.

It varies. I feel like I'm saying that a lot when it comes to Linux :P On Arch you are relying on other users and community members to package programs. Like the only official version of Steam on Linux is Debian, every other package is a community driven package so there will be times when say the Arch package is broken while every other version is working. With Flatpak though you can have the official program developers packaging it and releasing it through Flathub. They find it a lot easier to just have to support one package and it works on all distros. So a lot of times when people have issues with the program and they ask the developers to help they just respond with use the official flatpak version since that's the only one they support. With SNAPs and Fedora Flatpak it's all their own community packaging the programs and not the official package so your mileage will vary. And yes, there's at least 2 different Flatpak repos that I know of, Fedora Flatpak and Flathub with most people luckily using Flathub and not Fedora Flatpak. Sometimes it is better to find out what package the developer of the program you're using officially supports.

Luckily I'm automatically double checking when I go to install a program that I'm grabbing the RPM version most of the time, so even when there is no RPM I double check that I'm getting the Flathub flatpak instead of the Fedora flatpak. Which is completely different from what Fedora sets up to prioritize for download which they do Fedora Flatpak > RPM > Flathub Flatpak so they have been having drama with some developers who are tired of people having problems with Fedora Flatpak when they think they have the official Flathub Flatpak from the developer. OBS Studio is the big one fighting with Fedora.

But even with Fedora Flatpak being an issue, I still really like Fedora with GNOME. I like being on a distro that might not be as cutting edge as Arch, but is like only a week behind in terms of packages/drivers that actually makes use of a GUI for an application store. That has been my biggest issue with Arch distros not making use of Discover/GNOME Applications beyond being a front for Flathub. I enjoy having screenshots and more detailed information on applications beyond a text name and version number.

Trying to remember what Arch package is completely broken and they gave up on trying to fix it since the flatpak exists, want to guess it's also OBS Studio since I think I heard about it during the video Brodie did on OBS fighting with Fedora.

It works fine for you. Trying to record 4K60fps HEVC with accelerated Vega56 I had to use the AURs.

I still have to switch from Wayland to X11 to properly capture apps tho.

I did have to google something for the settings because it wouldn't record otb, but it wasn't something that needed to be fixed at cl or anything... So that is one program that makes me think garuda is for more intermediate users: there is less hand holding in that regard setting up for your hardware. On manjaro, obs worked otb, at least for me. But yea, manjaro is specifically holding back packages and tailoring each package to make sure it works with their distro and how it interacts with hardware.

It means that at the time I checked I had to use the CPU instead of the GPU (VAAPI) for encoding videos with the Arch build, and so had to restrain capture to 1080p/h.264. While on Win10 with the same hardware it is something I could do ootb.

There's also a websocket app named OBS Blade on the phone to control the scenes and the recording remotely, that is not available. And the web browser stuff to allow Twitch integration. All is detailed here.

Steam direct is as shitty as Greenlight was. And now they also screwed their early access refund system because they tried to sold one week early "premium AAAs" that were simply undercooked gamepass fodder.

Why would you "trust" Steam more than itch.io? Because they barely allow you to test the game for two hours and then remove your right to refund? Should we list the abysmal number of scam titles (and I say SCAM titles, not mere shovelware), that got released on Steam because they dont give a fuck about proper curation nor quality control for their users?

If I set my goal to buy an indie title I'll try to use the platform where they get most of my money...
