Translator's note:
**Note: This game does not run properly in DOSBox-X, thanks to a routine “by K.ozawa” ** Startup Begin the game with the ‘Game Disk’ in ‘Drive A’. Save/Load functions require a ‘User Disk’ in ‘Drive B’.

I highly recommend the emulator Neko Project 21/W for playing on Windows. It's the most feature complete emulator for the NEC PC-9801 and is in active development receiving frequent updates. Use this guide for help on how to obtain and configure the emulator.

It can also play fine using the Neko Project II Kai core in RetroArch. Just make sure you have all the PC-98 bios files in the System folder. (C:\RetroArch-Win64\system if using default install location on Windows) I shared them in this comment.

This version can be recommended over the PC-88 version due to PC-98 emulation being a little bit more accessible and easier to manage than emulating PC-88. They're both mostly identical though. Even making use of the same cover.

It's a common floppy disk backup file extension used by both PC-88 and 98 games. The file extension this had before applying the patch was .nfd which is the T-98 Next format used for PC-98 games. Some emulators won't recognize that format so it works better to have it be a .d88 file.
It's good to know, thx for your answer, bro, ^-^/.

Updated to the latest version from today (July 3rd) Btw I'm going with EST since that's my timezone. When he uploaded it to Github it was 4 hours from being the 4th.

My intention was to have them there before people would go there; I know in some time zones its already "tomorrow" haha. Anyway, thanks so much for keeping up with the updates as well as support for the people with questions!

It's literally the same game but on a different computer model. The graphics are also basically the same too. If you put them side by side there's probably no difference at all. It's just PC-98 is a little bit easier to emulate since there's more emulators for it. (the ones I mentioned in the description are the best for it tho)

The Japanese versions are virtually identical, but there are a couple of small differences I've found:
• The PC-98 version seems to use FM + Beep, and sounds slightly different from the FM + PSG of the PC-88 version
• The PC-88's end credits use the font ROM over a starry background, while the PC-98's credits use the embedded font over a similar starry background

The difference in the English patched versions is quite significant, however. I have quite a few assembly hacks in the PC-88 version (most of them are also in the X1 version and a couple of those are also in the MSX2 version), but the PC-98, FM-7, and FM77AV versions have no assembly hacks at the present time. At some future point, I will probably endeavor to port my z80 hacks to x86 and 6809 assembly, respectively.

Why this ROM has the same format/extension (.d88) than the PC-88 version, bro? x'd?

is the storyline in this game the exact same as the PC-88 version?

man i loved the ys 1 and 2 chronicle versions so much it's near impossible for me to play any older version.
there's the DS version that ALLOWS an attack button, also touch controls to move, and uses 3d graphics for the backgorund.

I fixed it with the correct readme file. The previous archive had the one from the PC-88 one. It was the fault of the person maintaining the PC-98 translations archive.org entry. They zipped it with the correct rom but with the wrong readme file. Although the readme is kinda unnecessary since it doesn't really say anything important
