PSP Your favorite PSP games?

i am simple person: Give me Monster Hunter, I play Monster Hunter.

Also loved the GTA games for the psp, my mind was blown the first time i saw a 3D GTA portable (Chinatown wars was also fun but i prefer playing it on the DS).
Totally agree. I replayed Vice City Stories this past summer and was really surprised at how big it still felt, and I remember being blown away by the scale when it was new too.

Monster Hunter is also a game that manages to feel HUGE because of how smart they were with separating the areas on the maps, so it gives off the illusion of being even bigger than it actually might be (not taking into account the already vast amounts of content it has), which is always really impressive on a handheld.

Kurohyou: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinshou
Monster Hunter 3 portable
Monster Hunter freedom unite
Phantasy star portable
Parodius Portable
YS 1 och 2 Chronicles
Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles

Are my current favorites.

I bought a psp specifically to play Hatsune Miku: Project Diva 2nd/Extend without the input lag that comes from playing it in PPSSPP, so I can safely say that pair are my absolute favorites on the console. I've racked up plenty of hours in Disgaea as well, lovely game.

The psp truly had a lot of gems. I still have mine but I've switched to emulation exclusively a while ago because ergonomics-wise I can't stand it.

Some of my personal favorites (there's probably more):
Daxter. Feels like a better continuation of Jak & Daxter than the mainline Jak games on ps2. Just very cozy and fun to play and it looks fantastic too.
MGS Peace Walker. What an incredible game, I hold it in higher regard than some of the main MGS titles. I prefer the ps3 version these days because it plays more smoothly, but I appreciate just how ambitious and expansive this game was.
Wipeout Pulse. Every Playstation console needs a good wipeout game.
Motorstorm Arctic Edge. Some people like sim racers, I'm more of a give me ramps and mayhem kinda gal. Just pure fun.
Final Fantasy Tactics/Tactics Ogre. I'd put those on the same pedestal. I never really got into the Disgaea series so these are my psp tactical rpg kings/queens.
Gitaroo Man Lives. Already my favorite underrated PS2 gem so it figures it becomes my favorite underrated psp game too. A very unique and creative title with a great soundtrack. The gameplay to me as a guitarist is the closest approximation to playing guitar I've seen. Hear me out. Whereas guitar hero/rock band emulated the instrument well mechanically it never really felt like playing guitar to me, oddly enough, gitaroo man is what I see in my head when I try to shred.
The god of war psp games. The second one is just nuts. It's fun on the handheld but play it on the big screen if you can. Borderline the best 128-bit god of war.
A timid endorsment of Tenchu: shadow assassins. I'm a sucker for this franchise as there's to this day nothing quite like it, but there was a series of very odd choices that have been made during the creation of shadow assassins that may hamper your enjoyment. Iirc it was originally a rather gimmicky wii title before it made its way to the psp. The Japan-only ports of Tenchu 3 and Kurenai aren't bad either but the controls suffered greatly in conversion.
3rd birthday, dissidia, kingdom hearts, crisis core as mentioned before. I'm not quite as enamored with crisis core as I am with the other ones but Squeenix were undoubtably masters of the hardware. What they put on the screen borders on black magic at times.
Tony Hawk's Underground 2 remix. Pure distilled joie de vivre. The ps2 and pc versions play much more smoothly due to the larger number of shoulder buttons but having this kind of game on the go back then was mindblowing.
Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles. Polygonal remaster of Rondo of Blood. Spiffy in its own right. Includes the original Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the night as unlockables.
Me & My Katamari. Just lovely.
Metal Slug Anthology. Compilation of the first 6 and a half Metal Slug games. There are now much better ways to play them but back then it was amazing to have the them all portable.
Burnout Legends/Dominator. One of the most fun arcade racing game series period.
Favorite fighting game on the system is a tie between Tekken 5 and Blazblue 2. Soulcalibur broken destiny is fun too and graphically impressive but the lack of any storymode diminished my enjoyment.
Do you know perspectively how we can all VS in Dissidia 012? There are some apprehensive emulators although I tried to use them, none availed. I would like to work together to make a way for us to play.

My absolute favourite PSP game of all time will always be Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. So many hours spent on that game, so many memories and hunts and yet I still come back to play it frequently. It's just one of those games that sticks with you from childhood and never leaves. It's janky, it's frustrating sometimes, but damn is it a masterpiece.
Some other PSP games I love:
  • Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
  • Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops
  • What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord?
  • Persona 3 Portable
  • Persona 2 (Both of them)
  • Rengoku II: The Stairway to H.E.A.V.E.N.
  • Half-Minute Hero
  • Darkstalkers Chronicle
  • Dante's Inferno
  • Monster Hunter Portable 3rd
  • God Eater Burst
  • Phantasy Star Portable
  • Yu-Gi-Oh Tag Force GX and Tag Force 5D's (All of them)
  • Dracula: Undead Awakening (Please check this game out, it's so slept on but it's pretty much what Vampire Survivors today is and it is insanely addicting.)

Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars
Danball Senki, BOOST, and W
Dead Head Fred
Half-Minute Hero
Kamen Rider Climax Heroes OOO, Fourze, & Super Climax Heroes
Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
LittleBigPlanet
Lumines 1 & 2
Me & My Katamari
MediEvil Resurrection
Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X
Mega Man: Powered Up
Metal Slug Anthology
Metal Slug XX
PaRappa the Rapper
Rengoku 1 & 2
Rockman Dash 1 & 2
Unchained Blades
Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
WipEout Pulse
WipEout Pure
WTF: Work Time Fun
Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force 1-6 & Special

Damnit. I think all of my favorites have been mentioned already. THIS CHANGES NOTHING.

Dissidia Duodecim
Final Fantasy Tactics - The War of the Lions (the slowdown patch is required and it has lots of great hacks for it as well.)
Jeanne d'Arc
Metal Gear Solid - Peace Walker
Persona 3 Portable
Tactics Ogre - Let Us Cling Together (look up the One Vision hack, I can't play without it anymore.)
Twisted Metal: Head-On

Not as big of a list as I was expecting. I do have a bunch of PSP games, but those are the only ones I know well enough to say they are favorites.

I saw a few mentions of The 3rd Birthday and I have words to say about that game. As an action RPG on a portable console, it's pretty good. The camera was a bit of a cunt, but once you got used to that it played pretty well. The Overdive system was a really cool idea and it works rather well. You can do lots of neat strategic things with it and set up some really nice crossfire barrages with it. I think it's also really interesting that you have to basically think of the NPCs and their equipment as limited resources. There's also a large amount of weapons that you can use and customize. The visuals and soundtrack were also quite good. While I miss the body horror designs of your foes from the first two games, I thought the Twisted were cool enough. So far so good! That's all the nice things I have to say about the game.
Over Energy isn't the worst thing ever, but it's boring. It is not a good replacement for the Parasite Energy abilities from the first two games. I will admit that I don't know how well the Parasite Energy abilities would work in the game considering the gameplay style, but I think they could have come up with something better. Liberate isn't very exciting either, just a bread and butter Devil Trigger form. However, those are not game killers.

Where I take real issue is the plot and characters. There are many reasons I despise the plot, but I really don't feel like writing an essay. The highlights would be that it's a time travel plot done wrong. Time travel is a hard thing to get right. This game did not get it right. It was a giant stupid mess that makes no sense. I don't have anything positive to say about the story. As for the characters, this is the biggest problem with the game. The cast is a whole lot of nothing. The only character I remember is the sniper lady, she approached being cool, but I couldn't tell you her name. x) Aya was always cool, she's still cool right? Sorry, she's just your typical amnesiac character now. Spoiler time (as if it fucking matters)!

Yeah, she's not Aya anymore. Just Eve in her body. Ooookay. Why were Aya and Kyle gunned down in the first place? If you know I'd really like to know. Not some fan theory or justification, an actual reason. As far as I know there is none. So instead of Aya we get a blank slate that isn't even Aya. But don't worry, you get to kill Aya at the end of the game! Oh wait, that isn't a good thing. So it's a character assassination both literally and metaphorically. What the hell? This is just so stupid. I really don't even have much more to say. It's a dumb plot device and an even dumber plot twist. What were they thinking?

That's not even getting into how oversexulized Aya is in the game. She was always hot, sure, there's nothing wrong with that. There are issues though. I don't mind clothing damage as a concept, but she wears less than a stripper when it gets bad enough. Hmm, I guess I only have two points. The other being she's a teenage girl in an adult's body. Some people won't see that as an issue, but I think it's gross. It's on the same level as "don't worry, this 10 year old girl is actually a 20,000 year old dragon" or some shit. It's really skirting the line. And I don't want nor need a lecture on the cultural differences surrounding age in Japan versus the USA. I know. I don't like it. Ultimately, whatever on that point I guess. It's fictional, nobody is getting hurt so you do you I guess. I pretend to be a cartoon wolf on the internet and I'm by no means innocent and some would find that gross as well. This is all just my perspective though.

Anyway, it's just a video game, so whatever. I'm just salty because I feel it was not a good way to end a series that I loved. Something might happen in the future, who knows? I hope it's a reboot or ignores The 3rd Birthday at least. x)

Haven't seen Death Jr. mentioned on here. I think I might be one of the few people left who loves this game.

It's an action platformer that works well as a portable title. From a design standpoint, it's actually a lot more reminiscent of older FPS games, particularly Duke Nukem 3D with the familiar yet twisted urban settings, destructibility, level layouts that reward exploration with secrets and a plenty of firearms to play around with. Tbf, it starts off a bit slow but after unlocking more weapons and combos you'll become a beast and unleashing everything you've got makes getting an A+ grade quite rewarding.
Honestly the best parts are the setting, characters and style. It actively goes for an "Invader Zim"/"Nighmare before Christmas" aesthetic and humor, the devs even stated in an interview they wanted it to be sold in Hot Topic. The issue is that they don't really go all-in on it, there's only a few cutscenes for the beginning and end of a save and not much else writing wise.
The demos they were showing for the launch of the PSP were really impressive and would've been cool to have in game. Some of it was even better than what got released, like a fully interactive main menu in DJs room, a playable Pandora, who is basically a non-character outside of the intro and ending, and some other tech demo stuff that would've made the campaign a bit more interesting. There's quite a bit shown in IGN and Play Magazine interviews and the dev team seemed fairly passionate about it. It's a very artistically driven franchise.
There was a solid follow-up that played into its artistic strengths, it got remade for the Wii which is honestly the better version so not really going to dwell on it. This shit was trying to be a franchise too, they were coming out with some neat tie-ins like a comic run, toy line and even a western manga, yes really. They were going to get movie made and even a TV show that had studio Madhouse involved. Unfortunately, some mergers happened, and the franchise wasn't deemed profitable enough to justify going through with it.
I still really like this game and its characters. It would be nice to see more of DJ, but honestly this was a lightning-in-a-bottle thing that only would've happened at that specific time and place.

i will give you one recommendation, but it's the only one you'll ever need. Crush is one of the most underrated games on the platform, it's a super cool and unique 3D-2D puzzle platformer with tons of cool ideas, a killer art style, mind bending puzzles, and lots to do. it's my favorite PSP game and i think more people need to give it a shot !!

Everybody's tennis, while still an over the top arcade experience, it's mechanics and intensity(of the matches), far surpass the likes of the mustache man who fights with gorillas over some dilapidated buildings.
Nba ballers rebound, funny announcer aside, it's a pretty good evolution of classic nba jam in my book.
Harvest moon a hero of leaf valley, a remake of save the homeland, one of the few story of seasons games that has an actual history.
