Worst retro games you've played?

simply couldn't have fun with this one

Personally myself I have it on the Mega Drive and enjoy it even if I still can't get past those damn hook jumps in What The Heck?!.
Got a couple great candidates. Let's start with "Lost Word of Jenny" for Famicom.

This is a poorly designed side scroller where you run around, kill enemies and pick up items in order to progress further in the game. Standard stuff, but there are a couple major issues:
View attachment 128587

• While the game presents itself as this non-linear adventure where you get to pick the order of each stage; like Mega Man or Addams Family on SNES, most of the levels are locked at the beginning and the game randomly decides the order in which you'll tackle each stage for you. The freedom of choice is an illusion. WHY START YOUR GAME OFF LIKE THAT!?!? Imagine playing "Mega Man 2" but you can only progress in some random order that the game has already decided for you.

• The hit detection + Jenny's pitiful attack range are among some of the worst I've ever experienced in a video game. Expect to die a LOT due to the awful combat. While there IS a Spray item that sorta rectifies this issue, you can only obtain it after mindlessly kicking each area in the hopes that it will appear.

There's also a dagger that proves useful against the "bosses", though you can only obtain it by methodically searching every pixel for letters that spell "Jenny". And of course, they're never in the same positions.

Next up, "Fester's Quest".

Let's get the positives out of the way (this game sure needs them lol):
• The graphics are decent
• The soundtrack is amazing

........Yeah, that's about it.

My biggest problems with this game are the enemies being bullet sponges and the fact that THEY can shoot through walls but YOU can't (These issues DID get fixed in the PAL version + Fester moves a bit faster). The game also fails to capture the spooky atmosphere of the IP its based on. Compare this to Addams Family Values for SNES and Genesis which, despite being a mediocre game, NAILED the visual presentation.

Lastly, Obake no Q-tarou for Famicom.
View attachment 128594

It's a repetitive and poorly designed side scroller where you fly around and collect items while avoiding dogs (Because Q-tarou was afraid of dogs in the source material).

The controls are stiff. Combine this with the fact enemies move faster than you + they have a wider attack range than you, and this quickly becomes one of the most frustrating NES games you'll ever experience.

I actually enjoyed Donald Land. Sure, it's not the greatest game (or even the best McDonald's game), but there are far worse side scrollers on the NES.

The thing about Pac-Land on Famicom is... Well, there actually IS a way to play the game with standard controls.................but you gotta use the 2ND CONTROLLER (Yes, you read that right).
I actually played a bit of Fester's Quest on a call with my high school mate on Discord (we have an injoke about his dad looking like Uncle Fester) and it was unbearably hard. At least we got a good laugh out of it

tbh, I can't even disagree with you. I've never liked any of the mainline Sonic games (only really favoring Mean Bean Machine and 3D Blast) and they kind of made me hate platformers until I started emulating in my teens. "Wow! I can actually go at my own pace and not just violently crash into on-coming enemies? What a novel idea!"
i get where you are coming from, and you aren't completely wrong. you might enjoy the newer ports of the classic sonic games as they are in widescreen so you can see farther ahead.

i can't find any games that are crap but i recall one i saw at summer camp. the adventures of tom sawyer for NES. i tried it and i said nope it's crap... the final boss is so stupid. it's some guy on a dinosaur and dinosaur looks PISSED after you knock the guy out then the dinosaur smile's i'm like WTH.... also the game was suppose to be a dream or was it?

I will say - it is quite the PITA to constantly run into enemies with a bunch of rings and just immediately lose them like that.

There two games that I hate

Pac-land on nes
The control are do weird I never past the third stage woth waterfall I don't what to do.

I think I played the port of it for the PC-Engine/Turbografx-16 and I want to say that it plays a bit better? Been a while since I booted it up

Terminator 2 for the NES
Oh the Genesis version was equally as bad. I bought it by mistake from EB Games hoping that it was the port of the Midway arcade game. Boy was my 12 year old ass disappointed
And I still was never able to make it past the bar scene

This is probably the worst nes game I owned and the worst nes game I've ever played

Track and field came with this controller that only had three buttons on it. It was a bunch of sports mini games and every single game used only that controller. I'm sure you can imagine how riveting games that only use three buttons as the entirety of their controls are.

Aydin chronicles looked so cool when I found it. But it was extremely misleading. Not only was it a slow, clunky, confusing and shitty game but it has some kind of known bug that sometimes just wipes your controller pack. I had one of those third party controller packs with extra storage that had like all my n64 saves on it. Aidyn chronicles erased them all. I was so fucking choked. I had so many games saved on there. So many games I'd spent so much time unlocking stuff for multiplayer on that just was gone. It actually ruined my enjoyment of my n64 and made playing other games worse it was that bad. It's still the game I hate the most out of every game I've ever played.

controller paks are a dick move from nintendo. just put the save's the FUCKING carts i don't care if it cost extra for making that shit just fucking do it!!!

DOOM! *Gets murdered*.

Probably Jurassic Park on SEGA CD, but it was more boring than plain bad.

I'm sure there's one I'm missing due to self-preservation gears clicking into place.

Think this one goes to TMNT on the NES for me. When I was just getting into emu, I looked at a site and thought "wow i grew up on tmnt (the 2000s one mind you), this might be a fun thing to try out!". a new avenue of gaming had just opened up to me, so younger me was too excited to really think about quality.

i learned real fast why quality control in what i chose mattered...

Controller paks were great for rented games or for bringing over to people's houses. I hated renting games with built in saves because you could never finish them unless you kept re-renting the same same cartridge until you beat it. Though it was kinda fun sometimes renting carts with saved games on them. I remember renting Worms Armageddon on the n64 and not realizing at first the saved teams were saved onto the cartridge. Someone had made a team full of swear words and sex terms and shit and I thought that was just part of the game. I remember trying to hide it from my parents so they wouldn't give me shit for picking a game with words like that in it.

Kid me rented all the shitty NES games so that adult me would know what to steer clear of.

Actually I do still have several ROMs of "bad" games out of sheer nostalgia. Things like Godzilla for NES, for example. Such a bad game but it really brings me back.

RoboCop 2 & 3 on the nes, especially 2 with ugly graphics and terrible physics
in fact any game made by Painting by Numbers is bad

40 Winks is probably mine.

Saw ads for it as a kid and always wanted to play it. Finally booting it up as an adult was disappointing. It felt like a straight up copy and paste of Rareware game but with none of the hallmarks that made them worth playing
I recall it having a cancelled n64 port which was leaked a while later
