Worst Fan Translations

Tom said he was going to pick that one up until the MTL so he cancelled his project.

No offense to the guy who uploaded the 7 Molmorth MTL release, but it is the worst thing I've ever seen. Even if people edit a MTL translation, MTL does not understand context.
Tom can still do it. He's the only one telling him not to do it.

MTL doesn't understand context, but it understands more than someone who can't read Japanese. It also works faster than someone who doesn't do the work at all, harder than someone who wants to change the game into a fanfic, and less offensively than Vic Ireland and WildBill. In other words, it's worse than the best translators, but better than the worst.

MTL is only a problem for a few reasons: ① Fanslators have a pointless obsession with being "first," and thus avoid retranslating anything that isn't already popular worldwide due to old official translations (ironically making them "last"). ② Fanslators are afraid of stepping on other translators' "turf" because some fanbases are a bit nutty (particularly for Working/Dynamic Designs). ③ They ignore that this used to be the norm before MTL (note how most everything by J2E has been replaced by a better fanslation because everyone was willing to admit they weren't that good at translating).

In other words, MTL is not the problem. The problem is that fanslators have an attitude about their hobby that needs to adjust with the times or they'll see their place in it depreciate.

I remember this interesting line in DeJap Tales of Phantasia (snes) fan translation

I remember playing a bit of this translation for Tales of Phantasia several years ago and I remember coming across this scene on the boat and thinking something along the lines of, "WTF is this?????" 😭

Good news, everyone!

Tales of Phantasia (SNES) is slowly (and I do mean slowly) being refined by the guy that made MMX3: Zero Project. A lot of script corrections, mechanical refinements and even restored cut content. That said, at the rate its going we are more liable to see Life Bottle translate the PSP version before that is done.
quality stuff takes time.

what version is that from. i've tried a few times to play ff6 and i don't remember that bit of dialog.

Justin3009 is fuckin'  awesome, I've been a fan of his work since I was a kid..

Yeah that guy is an insane wizard. He made X3 great again, to me.
Literally making childhood dreams come true with that one. I couldn't believe it when I first found out about it, I think I was like 15.

Literally childhood dreams. So did Kaiseran with the FF7 Survivor mod.

Vanilla X3 always frustrated me a bit because it always felt like it was on the cusp of greatness, but not quite. ZP fixes some critical mechanics that make X3 so much better.

The fact it was made by a third party developer probably has a lot to do with it. I actually didn't know this tidbit until recently.

I don’t know that until a while back. Looking back now, it makes the difficulty and my frustrations with X3 make sense!

There was a fan translation for Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Children - Black Book that came out back in 2021. But the translation was of poor quality…
Someone who worked on the translation said that they translated the game out-of-context. So you aren’t able to follow the story well and understand what’s happening. I hope that one day this game (along with the other Devil Children games not released out of Japan) get the proper fan-translations they deserve, because this wasn’t it… 😭

So Capcom outsourced it? wow, way to treat one of your mainline franchises, haha.
Capcom is notorious for bad decisions, like trying to reboot series that don't need it (D,M.C., breath of fire 5), on disc DLC or just terrible money management and nothing has changed if i'm being honest.

Waiting for street fighter to be rebooted as a first person shooter.

They put a lot of chips on MH Wilds. From my impressions of the beta it seems they didn't trainwreck things (although the peformance demands are ridiculous). I wonder if they're waiting until the expansion to screw up.

The older fan translation of E.X. Troopers on the 3DS. I didn't understand the story at all. I've heard good about the newer translation. I'd like to replay it sometime.

I don't know if it's a bad translation, my poor english or just a weird story but I remember finishing YS: V on the SNES without a single clue about what was going on 😅

It's not the translation, Ys V is somewhat notorious in the series for how many issues it has compared to every other game in the series.
