I think its scummy for them to drop physical media entirely, but its not surprising. Somebody was going to be the first one to do it -- and doing it (in my opinion) was inevitable. I feel like physical media will eventually be phased out the same way film was phased out. Not 100% extinct but rare and novel.
I think how people react to this attempt to phase out physical will in the end help determine what happens to physical.

Nope. next console will be too expensive to justify over building a PC, same lack of consistent month to month exclusives to give a damn about anymore, everything will be digital now to boot, have to periodically log in within 36 months to not lose your account due to inactivity. Nah i'm good thankyou.

Hey Jelly, are you mad at me? Sorry for not replying sooner.

No I will continue to collect PlayStation games ps1 through 5 but if ps6 doesn't have a disc drive am not buying it. I'll just focus on buying newer physical Nintendo games. I have a pretty powerful gaming laptop and a legion go 2 and it's time to show them some love. Fallout London here I come.

I am a big gamer of all systems and typically buy a new console as soon as it is released. When the PS6 comes out, I'll wait to see if there's an exclusive that I have got to play to decide if I buy one. It would have to be something mind blowing for me to buy a PS6 at any price though.

I will continue to buy just physical releases during the rest of the PS5 lifespan ONLY IF they're exclusives and it's something I can't miss. I'll buy everything else on PC or other consoles. I'm fine sticking to my current collection too. My backlog will easily last me the rest of my life.

Agree, Sony could reverse course and add a disc drive in the second gen of the ps6 if they see dollar signs with the clear resurgence of physical media. Also component parts could be much cheaper as supply chain catches up to AI demand and AI demand possibly cools.

I don't consider myself a loyalist to any platform. The only thing that will keep me coming to a platform is if there are games to play on it.

PS5 had enough exclusives for me to get one, primarily the Final Fantasy Remake series, which was console exclusive for a time. Other exclusives have been good, albeit infrequent.

Xbox hasn't convinced me to get a console yet. The only game I've wanted to get so far is the upcoming OD, which very well could be playable on PC for all I know. Even then, I still might get a Series X used or something. My PC isn't very powerful (and upgrading is prohibitively expensive) and I really like the way their console looks.

Switch 2 has had a really compelling lineup of games so far. Donkey Kong Bananza sold me early, and I ended up getting the system the closest to launch I ever have before for any past launch. I use it almost every day in handheld mode, which is still as practical and good as it was with their last console, but even better with more comfortable controls and a larger screen.

I understand why there's outrage about the disc-less future, but it's not going to detter me from getting any future hardware if it has exclusives that are compelling, or features that interest me. It's been very obvious that the next gen was going to be all digital every since ~2020 when the current Playstation/Xbox consoles launched with all digital editions. It's part if the reason why I think the outrage is a bit overblown. It feels like some people must have been burying their heads in the sand on this.

You are making things way simpler than they are. In a future where all the games are digital and from the PlayStation store, PlayStation controls fully your ability to play them, or not, and has less of an incentive to lower game prices.

So if you're struggling to play modern games, prepare to struggle way more in a diskless future where it all hangs on PlayStation's corporate strategy.

It's more than the physical aspect.

Probably not. There's a few PS games on PC that I don't have, such as God of War, so at some point in the future I may grab those. But they aren't doing anymore PC exclusives so I literally couldn't support them in the future that way even if I wanted to. For the record, I only have up to PS3. PS4 and 5 didn't seem worth it to me because there were so few exclusives, and the PS6 will probably be a similar way, as well as simply too expensive for me to warrant buying.

I've got a good amount of games in the backlog, as well as tons of games that I don't own that I haven't played yet. Even IF some crazy exclusive came out on a PS console, I wouldn't bother buying it for several years. In the future I may end up having a PS6 just from getting it used or something, but I probably won't be buying directly. That said, who knows, because if there's no physical media then what games could I play if stores were to shut down??

The only consoles that seem worthwhile to me are Nintendo consoles at this point. Nintendo first-party (and many third-party games too) have shown time and time again to be of some of the best possible quality. Literally every single Nintendo console has several that stands as a contender for one of the best games to ever be created. These games are also guaranteed exclusive and the odds of that ever changing are low. I like Nintendo games and I know that if I ever want to play one, I actually need a Nintendo console. Nintendo has done their fair share of stupid shit in the past, but it's generally pretty different compared to Playstation and Xbox who are just having a pissing contest to see who can kill themselves first.

I've never owned an Xbox console, and again, I haven't bought a Playstation console since the PS3. Sony stopping production of physical discs is yet another turnoff for me, but the chances of me ever getting a new Playstation were already pretty low. I'm very content with my PC and my consoles pre-2010.

Truthfully though, I don't think that a group of people who stop buying from Playstation (or Sony as a whole) is going to do anything to the company whatsoever. Honestly, the people on this forum, as well as the online gaming community as a whole are some of the more "hardcore" gamers (for lack of a better term) who actually care about this sort of thing and take note of what happens in the gaming world. Many people are going to fold and buy the next Playstation releases anyway (remember when people tried to boycott the Switch 2, and then proceeded to buy it Day 1?) and many people outside of this space simply could not give less of a damn.

It will be interesting to see how we're going to go on about PlayStation.

Will you keep buying into PlayStation? You can say why.
The only way I will support Sony with from this point on is the margin they get from every Blu-Ray I buy, other than that I have no use for Sony.

This is true of every digital storefront except GOG. It's not a good thing, but it just is. No amount of moralization about it from me is going to change that.

Not really, game key sites exist, also other storefronts exist, Sony will be the only place you'll be able to get the games from.

If you think about that before making a purchase from PlayStation, it might help.

You know that PlayStation recently took away more than 500 movies from users' digital libraries, some of which classics? What makes you sure they're not preparing to do it for digital games?

I was on board with Playstation up until this generation. It's kind of wild just how much it feels like they dropped the ball with the PS5 in ways I don't feel the previous console gen did. I still might buy the odd PS5 game here and there, but for the most part the major releases just don't appeal to me anymore. I don't regret getting a PS5 because it's basically like the real PS4 pro. It plays all the same games and more, and the games run better and load much faster.

Even before they announced that physical was getting dropped I have been pretty sure that I won't bother getting a PS6. It's hard to even conceptualize what a new console gen would offer that would make me want to get a new one. What could they do to new games on it that would make it feel worth the upgrade? Console generations feel like they have mostly plateaud in the graphics department. Sure you could theoretically increase the resolution and fps, but the games will still be the same. Maybe if Sony went back to doing wacky exclusive shit like they used to do I would be more on board. Most of the AAA stuff they put out just feels too safe. Playstation feels so corporate with very little creative drive these days. It doesn't help that the PS6 will cost at least 1000 USD. I have better things to spend that kind of money on.

In my collection I have PS1, PS2, PS4, PSP and Vita.
And I love all of them.

I've never been interested in the PS5 with its limited game library and its awful looks.
And with what they've done now, I'm even less interested.

I'm even considering getting a PS3 Slim, which is the only decent Sony console still missing from my collection.
I have a PSP and a PS3 in my collection, planning on getting a PS2 again after my last one broke down last year. I am not planning on getting a vita or a PS4 or a PS5.

I want to get an Xbox One as a backup if my PS3 dies (I mainly use my PS3 as a multimedia hub.

Issue is that there are no platforms to switch to. Xbox rn is in a state of panic, you cannot afford a PC unless you want to deal with the troubleshooting headache that is the BC250, and Nintendo... idk Nintendo is probably fine I don't really care about them anymore
You're just making me realize how terrifying the modern state of gaming is. I'm lucky enough to have always had a PC, but RAM and storage prices are absurd, and PS/Xbox have shot themselves in the foot. Nintendo is doing okay but it's a different subset of games around there.
A PC is technically manageable if you're willing to build, but you're still looking at $1k MINIMUM which is a steep price if someone wants a PC only to play games on. And even then, that's pretty midrange.

I normally argue that gaming is a pretty cheap hobby, especially if you look for sales and things, but it's pretty rough to get into right now. At this point your best bet is to buy a Switch or something that released before the PS4, lol. A Sega Genesis ain't too bad right now... that's the true gold mine.

I'm aware. I assume this as a risk for every digital purchase I make on practically every storefront.

This has happened with their movie collection before. I don't purchase digital releases of films that aren't downloadable from any source, and I don't pay for any streaming sites aside from YouTube. I have a big hard drive.

Game keys to redeem on Steam where the publisher can delist/deny download access if they really wanted?

GTA 5 and RDR 2 are old games at this point. Most of the people who wanted them have them.
My mother always told me I'm not most people.

I know, I'm just thinking of like what a person like that could switch to if the recent news has persuaded them to drop Sony. Cause Xbox also has planned to get rid of physical games for a long time, and getting a decent gaming PC right now, unless you get a BC250, is unattainable for nearly everyone.
-Sell ps5
-Buy prebuilt from local electronic store
-most prebuilts come with 20 or 30series GPUs
-play modern games at 1080p or 2k
seems like a normal deal for me
