And we rode dinosaurs to school... ::eggmanlaugh

uphill both ways, with no shoes.

In the snow!
I actually had to walk back in the snow quite a lot (their was no way in hell I'd get there in time walking to school when I lived like thirteen miles away from it, even the bus I took would often be late). But I definitely had shoes- in addition to backpack filled with textbooks, food and gym clothes. My dad, an Army vet, actually told me that I pretty much completed the The 12 Mile Ruck over and over again.

I had to walk and had only one boot and one shoe. All the other kids called me "shobooty"

From a review of Sonic Heroes by the Xbox UK magazine. Have you another one?

The UK magazines where all very crass, they always were until maybe the late 2000's, it's also not very professional at all. I preferred the US magazines were much, much better, such as EGM and Gamefan, Gamepro etc.

The reviews were even worse, there's some serious shitburgers in those UK magazines. We would only by them as they had images and previews of upcoming games, which was useful if you didn't have the internet. The shade they threw at anything 2D was off the scale.

Truth. All those racy ads are mostly from UK magazines and were never seen by Americans which is why the reaction is always so shocking. Having grown up in the US i used to read stuff like Electronic Gaming Monthly and Tips & Tricks. Had subscriptions to both but not at the same time. I still have those old zines on my bookshelf. None of them were THAT bad despite having some gross out ads here n there. We still got the ad of Rayman pissing in the public bathroom though. lol

Honestly, a lot of the ads I remember from that time would still not be ran because the amount of violence and trash-talking (a bit before my time, but John Romero was apparently going to make all PC Gamers his bitch with Daikatana) in them, and while AFAICT most of the ads in the US weren't as raunchy.

I'd occasionally buy imported magazines at bookstores as a kid, like Unofficial Xbox Magazine UK or whatever it was called, and their "lad" culture was even more cringe than our "bro" culture was at the time, and unfortunately far less absurd at least in most of the examples of UK stuff I found. I remember hearing about the controversy about David Fincher's Life Is Short (at least that ad was absurd as hell) ad too, so it definitely seems the UK upped the ante compared to us when it came to stupidly offensive, trashy and often hilarious ads.

Though I do remember the Aughties having quite a few gross and/or titillating ads in them, or even a few full-fledged articles- in particular I remember some feature in OXM around 2004 or so that was about all the "sexy" games coming out back then, like The Guy Game, Rumble Roses or Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude, and how titillating schlock was a sign that games were "growing up" or something. I believe EGM said it more accurately in one of their last issues- they'd seen gaming grow up, from it's difficult birth through it's awkward, gross adolescence and finally mature into a gorgeous money-maker or something.

Maybe humor is subjective- some people (like me) find things like ATHF, South Park, Monty Python and Twisted Metal funny despite their juvenile nature. Others apparently consistently find stuff like Scrubs, Young Sheldon, Reba, and The Cosby Show to be funny. I have no idea what's wrong with them. :p
the cosby show sure is funny now lol

Nah, that's show is still too wholesome for me. Just because the showrunner was a rapey fuck doesn't make his staid family-oriented garbage any less trash... though I do admit the jokes about Bill Cosby and The Cosby Show are way more hilarious now.
Absurd, juvenile humor at it's finest, carefully ledging the element of surprise and bad taste to make people laugh in the way Monty Python often did.

Sounds like they were great for reading in the shitter... Or use as pinch TP XD

I'd have used that ad for Unreal, but
Tim Sweeney's
About To Make
You His Bitch
doesn't quite land the same.

(It would've been James Schmalz, but when was the last time anyone's heard from him?)
(We should've saved it for CliffyB's About To Make You His Bitch so that it could've strangled Gears in the crib.)

Sad that i'm not into beers.
Oh, that's not a beer. It's pretty much the closest thing I could think of to actual 100% grain alcohol moonshine that's regularly sold in liquor stores. Don't actually do that, and if you do don't use Everclear. You will die.
