Why are ppl dead set on calling games "dead"

Current gaming Discourse is very obsessed with the current moment and hype/trends, whatever came out last year is old news unless there's DLC or an update. I'm so glad I'm fairly unplugged from it and only hear about this stuff second hand usually now.

There's also an annoying sense of superiority the kind of people who shriek 'dead game' bring to the table. People at college basically insulted me for liking ARMS by constantly going on about it being dead and acting like they, people who never touched it, knew more about the game and its state than the person actively playing it with people online. Regularly confused why I didn't ditch them sooner.

Now I'm in groups that regularly play random old ass fighting games that have largely been forgotten and only have active players when we play. I actually prefer the double digit fightcade lobbies to Third Strike's endless stream of chatter.

When it comes to people saying insert game is dead, a lot of the time it's just that the peak has chilled out and it's more or less in the normal state of post-release. Games like Repo or Marvel Rivals will naturally go down in players after the initial release and maintain a certain number of players on the daily and that's far from "dead".

Especially when an actual dead game as stated a ton in the thread are games that you can't play anymore, as the name suggests than the other idea of a game's player base lowering in numbers. Overall just gamers being gamers at the end of the day and saying stuff that's just not true from (dead) gamers following the current hype trends.

To be fair, you can have a lot of players, but the people playing it are very insular, solitary, and/or often locked behind guild chats and you are just bumping into mute people that don't team up. To me, that is also a dead game.

It's like Elder Scrolls Online. I've tried many times to get back into it, but it's honestly dead a as door nail. Everyone does their own thing, playing single player in an online game, and there is no community that I can find.

The old lady yelling at clouds in me wants to say that it's largely a shift in gamer culture towards a "FOMO" model of rotating interests - things are "in" or they're "out"; coupled with most discussions about gaming happening in social media, which is itself largely built around fostering conflict for the sake of user retention, so 'my game is better than your game" pissing contests are the default mode of discourse that shapes every interaction had in these spaces.

With the increasing usage of internet, conflicts happen everywhere brought from real life issues. Worse because you can just easily claim anonymity to others to do whatever you want in the cyberspace other than the higher ups/admins/hackers.

My guess is that there are still too many people who aren't into INDIE gaming. They just won't play them, because they're "low budget" even though there are indie games that sell dozens of thousands or hundreds of thousand copies. They won't give these games a chance unless it's some game from a long date company that made it, so games are dead for them because they keep waiting for new games from these companies forever.

idk nyo, but it REALLY grinds dejikos gears when she sees that!!

if you like a game, play it! dont listen to what other people say, nyo!

My theory is that the folks who complain the loudest about user-base drops are "problem" players.

In games with small, tight-knit communities, being an asswagon is going to get a player booted and shunned because word-of-mouth will spread quickly about that player's bad behavior. I say this because I used to play a small-time MMORPG long ago that required players to manually create groups and travel to dungeons. There was no raid-finder like in WoW. If a player pissed off enough people, they would be forced to switch servers because hardly anyone would play with them in the current server.

On the other hand, a game with a large player-base makes it much easier to hide that kind of behavior. Repeat offenders can keep misbehaving because it doesn't directly affect their ability to play.

Like fr if a playerbase drops from 250000 to 249999 per year ppl automatically wanna discredit the game for being "dead".

And I hear these excuses from players like "I liked the game but its kinda dead now", bitch the playerbase didnt change that much, why dont you just enjoy the game until it actually dies out (speaking specifically about multiplayer games, cuz caring about a singleplayer game being dead is stupid.
I get you. I see this a lot on steam. It's annoying and misleading.

I see only the indie games that were popular on Twitter/Reddit being cared about by these "I only buy popular games" people lol.

I know people who'll still say Castlevania is the best metroidvania without even have ever played other Metroidvanias, it's like an excuse for being afraid of being wrong and falling in love with other games. It's possible to love Castlevania AND other games.

Don't piss on me and try to convince me it's raining. Games drop off and go dead all the time.

I play fighting games. Specifically, Virtua Fighter.

Popularity dies off on single player games, and their relevance may become dead. Sequels can do this. I don't see any problem making that argument when it's true.

This is what I see that people always repeat whatever is a popular opinion to seem socially acceptable. And this BS eventually did beget "hot take" and "L take" concept in new generation people to fuel cancel culture further. So when you go outside of the script that society writes for itself for delusional sense of normalcy and socially acceptable roles to play their "us vs them" mentality triggers and they attack you like a zombie instead of discussing, trying to understand people, comprehending differing opinion is not a threat to their existence and accepting the fact that everyone have very different sets of genes and life therefore naturally everyone has a way different personality but they try to fit into "the superior person" image decided by whoever is popular in social media by being fake but when someone is honest to themselves society try to drag them down to their abyss of stupidity SMH.

Well technically games are dead as they are Objects a Digital code so calling them dead and not alive is accurate

Well singleplayer games can die too anymore because they say "games are not meant to be played forever" and delete your game from your library so welcome to the future!!! Instead of flying cars we have companies deciding what you can keep or not, and "please delete our game from your device" SMH. For now it is not "too problematic" but when games have the digital cancer Denuvo and no one wanna crack them once Denuvo games deleted from your library there will be no realistic and easy way to play them anymore. And I'm afraid there can be worse BS than Denuvo shit keep coming to prevent you from playing your own game.

You will own nothing and be Happy alla World Economic Forum I really don't like that we move towards a Cyberpunk Future I rather have a Atompunk one not the the Pseudo Atompunk one from Fallout. Anyhow this is why I prefer me games Physical whenever possible. Digital only games where a big mistake like the stuff that must be connected to the Internet which some people do where the connect everything to Microsoft in there houses which can be shut down very quickly if you anger Microsoft.

Basically following what's hot on social media and things like that. I remember when it was Among Us and I never played it. Then it was Lethal Company and I didn't really care about that either.

I don't really play many online games anymore so it doesn't affect me too much, but its like how the current trend is Arc Raiders and Battlefield 6 i guess? Its crazy how fast stuff can drop off in the public mindsphere.

Fighting games are a different story cause several of them just end up turning into discord fighters
