I keep seeing news that the new Persona 4 remake, is altering loads of the main cast into being "fixed for the modern audience." Even going as far as changing the personalities of the characters we grown attached too over the years. I stopped and thought to myself. Why are they making this when the old games like 3 and Golden have no changes and are readibly available on modern and pc systems? What is the point of this game? Why change anything when you can just play the original for cheaper and get the better experience?

So far I'm seeing this mostly being talked about with Yosuke, it's not like his homophobia was an integral part of his character anyway, he never grows or overcomes it, it's treated as a joke mostly, it may be interesting to see an alternate version of him who knows, might not even change that much, besides, the original will still be there anyway, it's not like anything will be lost

I didn't even know they were making changes. Sort of makes more sense to me now tbh.

They only released the original version of the game on PC not that long ago, so this remake just didn't make any sense to me when they announced it. Now knowing they're attempting a "retelling" like the FF7 remake it all slots into place.

I'm gonna reserve judgement until I actually see what the changes are, but in principle, I have no issue with this.

Like @ZeromusVX4 said, those originals and ports of the original aren't going anywhere....as far as we know so far, at least.

To me, it isn't even about supposedly "keeping games apolitical" or the other way around, it's what we're doing here as consumers when the industry at large still wants to treat us like farm animals with no freedom of ownership. What's the point of ever genuinely investing into digital "ownership" when every version of the game ever will be archived in some way in such that it cannot be eventually usurped from the player by the corporation releasing it?

Easy answer: money. They know this shit will sell, especially as Persona is now more popular than ever.

Everything else is unfortunately a side effect of social medias influence on the world and making everyone more neurotic and insane. The "Modern audience" (which doesn't actually exist no matter how often they try to force that term down everyone's throats) is basically a product of the extreme vocal minority of insane fandom people who can't allow any uncomfy or "problematic" elements into their mental dollhouses favourite things. It's why everything has to have the edges sanded off, no one can have a real personality anymore for fears it may upset or cause some distress in people who are usually best left ignored.

If they really wanted to be bold; they should've announced they were gonna go back to the original concept they had for Yosuke's character, that was cut some time into development of the original PS2 game, where towards the end of his social link; he would've come out as gay to you and you'd have the option to reciprocate his feelings.

It's called a 'retcon' and both publishers and authors love doing it.

It won't be lost yet. You can't guarantee they won't pull the original from stores in another 2 to 5 years. Sure, a few people will just emulate the original ps2 game, but make no mistake, this is a replacement.

I actually have no idea who it's marketed for. Same with the live action Moana remake. They must think they can turn a profit though.

Maybe it's an experiment that determines how much funding future P-Studio projects will be allocated?

I'm worried that they'll remove the originals out of the stores. They done it with Yakuza 3

That's a very reasonable concern. But on the bright side, if that does come to pass it may encourage more folks to seek out the originals on the digital seas, or even original hardware.

I wouldn't worry too much about that with Atlus, they literally released a port of P3 Portable shortly before Reload, why go through this effort if they wanted to replace anything

I don't trust Atlus on this much like Sega, but if all the versions of the game are kept for sale somehow, that would be the best outcome possible.

Can't say I reciprocate on getting attached to Yosuke's "personality". I've beaten P4 Golden twice and only ever really cared for Kanji & Yukiko and the fact Kanji constantly gets berated by this 'dude bro' character Yosuke, who constantly flip-flops as a character and never actually grows always bothered me.
Yosuke is the worst of the dudebro archetypes in Persona games, Junpei and Ryuji are much better characters from the games of the series I've personally played.

Remakes can be a good way to improve characters. Nanaki became my second favourite FFVII character with my experiences of how they expanded upon him in the remake.
Not saying Atlus can do this of course, they're a pathetic company.

They could have made a 1 to 1 copy and I still wouldn't have bought it. Remakes just feel redundant, but I guess that's a whole other discussion.

If the companies had their way this would not be the case. They don't want you to play the old thing they want you on the more profitable new thing.
I don't think Altus will be delisting Golden anytime soon since the ports of it came out not that long ago, but there have been many such cases elsewhere.

People forget that love needs obstacles to overcome. If your friend is slightly homophobic and nevertheless comes to appreciate his gay homey, that overcoming is where the beauty is. It means nothing if a completely tolerant person just accepts the local gay dude, because why wouldn't he?

Persona 4 is full of weird sexual repression stuff, and it can be uncomfortable, but it is inherently humane and sympathetic in spite of that.

Sorry if this rant brushes against the forum rules.

I have heard that they will "fix" Kanji and Naoto so brace for even more discourse on a otherwise controversial characters. I really love Naoto; but im hoping they don't mess with her up in any shape or form.

You can apply this same logic to nearly every remake that changes the gameplay and characterization of characters just to please the elusive modern audience.

the so called mythical modern audience that does not exist or it does but they don´t even play game.
Anyway shit will sell because fans has 0 brain and will buy what ever shit that is feed to them.

I already own Persona 4 on my PS2 no need to waste money on 70 remake that not a proper remake.

if they really are making such drastic changes, I think we all already know what they're going to do to Naoto ::smirk1

Equippable overly long labcoat costume with cute sleeves for Naoto to use in dungeons surely *clueless*
