I've been playing them for a while now, and while I may never 1CC one of them, I like the series enough that I'm making one of my own. Not a Gradius game, but a Gradius-inspired indie game with Rougelike mechanics. There's a tie-in I'm also working on with this one, but I prefer to now talk about my projects less and actually develop them since for a while now, I have gotten nowhere with any of them.
im impressed you couldnt 1CC Gradius 1, ive been told its the easiest game in the series

Almost did! I find Salamander to be easier given the consistent loopholes the game has, but then again, that game has a massive difficulty spike that I'm still trying to learn how to not make it much of a problem.

I need to play that series sometime soon.. I like how active and goofy the games are but I don't know which are the ones to play.

i say play the anthology, no matter what system runs it. it ALWAYS frame drops. I think the more modern the system the less it lags, but you need those frame drops as it helps make things easier. I played the anthology port on my PS5 which is the ps4 of a PS2 port of the Wii. Inception?

I think I might go with the Wii/PS2 version since I prefer playing those that I have access to more easily.

just start with 1 and go forward from release date, the games get progressively more cooler that way, then play MS7 on the DS or on new systems since they ported that game plus XX which was a PSP release that got ported as well.

I completely forgotten Metal Slug appeared on both the GBA and the DS.

ahhh darn I suck massive ass at Gradius and R-Type style games. I actually wanted to get better at them, specifically to play more Parodious games. I played Drainus and really liked it, it brought a bunch of new mechanics in to the Gradius style level design. I don't usually do well with horis, I think the ones I had the most success with were the later Darius games (G, Gaiden) and Lords of Thunder.

well i suck at them too, i crank out the 9 lives on settings cause i keep crashing into the walls. Personally, it's to hit a specific enemy like those damn Ducker Mobile Cannons that walk behind me and decides to shoot me in the back like im his wife cheating on him with the mailman.

R-type... I still have yet to play more than just the PC-Engine port of the original. Also, what's Drainus? I know Darius but not this 👁️

I have a few of them on various systems and handhelds, here's pics of some I got for the 360, PS3 and PS2. I shared this in the Shmups FB group years ago. "Shooting Love 200X" (bottom left most game of 1st pic) is still sealed. View attachment 81343View attachment 81344View attachment 81345
I also had my time buying 360 shmups. After PS4, I think 360 is the best console for playing them, there was so much love for the genre on a barely dead machine in Japan.

Dodonpachi Daioujou has been an on/off addiction that's been going on for over a year now. Ive jokingly said I'm not marriage material until I beat Hibachi. Considering I can only make it to stage 4 on a single credit, It might be awhile.

Dodonpachi II Bee Storm is absolutely incredible.
I need to give this game a chance even if it's technically a non canon game not made by Cave but the publisher owned the name so they went to make their own sequel with a different dev.

What good non-Cave/non-Touhou Bullet Hells you could tell me to try?

Stuff developed by Raizing (e.g Battle Garrega, Armed Police Batrider) might be a good place to start. Or you could try out Toaplan's later games (e.g Batsugun) or games developed by Psikyo (e.g the Strikers 1945 series, Gunbird series, Dragon Blaze).

Maybe Crimson Clover: World EXplosion, Psyvariar Delta or Danmaku Unlimited 3 if you're after something newer.

apart from everything PlayerJuan mentioned (seconding extremely hard the Crimzon Clover World EXplosion recommendation that game is excellent) there's quite a few good ones on Steam and other storefronts nowadays. Blue Revolver Double Action, Blue Wish DEsire, Bullet Hell Monday (Black), Gunvein, Graze Counter GM, ZeroRanger and lastly, RainChaser is a really promising demo.

Just remembered 2 more - Cosmo Dreamer and Like Dreamer - but the art style might put you off! They look like utter dogshit mobile or Flash games. But they're both heavily influenced by Cave and Touhou. My first reaction was WTF is this shit but they both play really well
