Where are my Arcade shmup fans at?

It’s also one of the only shooters on Saturn that a mortal man like me can afford lol X,(

Also, it’s one of the best uses of sprite scaling I’ve ever seen, because it feels like a world that has real depth, which on a 2D plane is very commendable.

So, Layer Section is the Saturn port of a Taito arcade game called Rayforce. But that’s the Japanese name. Unlike a lot of other shmups, IT GOT A U.S. RELEASE! The name over here was Galactic Attack. Since it got a release outside Japan, its price secondhand didn’t explode like other shmups did on the system, even though it’s truthfully about as common as many of those other games.

Point is: it’s a great game with some of the best sprite scaling I’ve ever seen and a lot of great features. You can even disable the UI at the push of a button to make the screen feel less cluttered!

Sometimes I like to go back to the roots, the genesis, the basis of the genre. Without Xevious, Galaga nor Space Invaders we wouldn't be up here.

I like comparison videos to see how different they are

Galaxian and Galaga are both fun. I’m not a Xevious fan though! The pace isn’t right, and I feel like I’m just spoiled by how far the genre changed in the following years. I respect it a lot though!

Fun fact: Famicom Galaxian is one of the most important third party games of all time. Its existence on the Famicom early into the system’s life legitimized for many people that this was THE system to get, rather than a cool piece of tech with Nintendo games. It was already popular, but the promise that all your favorite games from other developers would come to it? That did a lot for people. Doesn’t matter the region, people have always just wanted one box that plays all the games they could ever want.

Xevious can be tedious mostly because of the bullets blending with the background (like in Battle Garegga) and how the ship is slow as hell (like Rayforce but feels more sluggish).

Let's remember that the Famicom was basically the Neo Geo of the 8-bits era by showcasing almost arcade accurate games in its early life (until the middle to late NES which delved further from Arcades while the PC Engine took the place of the 8-bits arcade machine).

The N64 having little to no third party devs hurted the console so hard despite its power and how it had masterpieces yeah...

Wasn't there another sequel to Galaxian/Galaga? I think it was Gaplus or Galaxian 3?

Edit: yes, the Gala- franchise got plenty! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Galaxian_video_games

Yup! Plenty of Galaga games!

So, a fun fact:
GameBoy Space Invaders has a little secret. If you put it into a Super GameBoy, it has the entirety of the SNES version of the game inside of it.

A super cool feature that turned what would have otherwise been a standard port into a notable game inside both the GameBoy and Super Famicom libraries.

But I'm guessing there's a good reason why Galaga is still the most popular of them all.

Galaxian feels a bit too archaic and too much of a Space Invaders-like so that Galaga really evolved the shmup genre before Xevious.

Wait, how did they manage to put a SNES rom inside a GB cart? That's black magic lol.

File sizes! The game is just really small, so they coded the assets for the SNES version into the GameBoy version as a bonus because they’re had so much leftover cartridge space.

I guess the real Space Invader was the SNES code!

I've just downloaded the game to try it and I'm impressed. Pretty solid port and I'm wondering why we don't see a full collection including many entries on PC... I know there's one but not on Steam.

Space Invaders '95 looks like a nice Parodius-esque take on the classic.

It's a massive shame it never got any console port...

Cute them ups are also quite interesting to play.

Xevious may be the more culturally relevant game, but Dragon Spirit is the true greatest from early 80’s Namco.

It will take your money though. It’s HARD. But it feels amazing to play, has satisfying power ups, and has a godlike aesthetic that still rocks to this day. I swear, this game alone is why Namco Museum Volume 5 is so expensive for the US PlayStation, because everybody wants a piece. And the PC Engine version? Amazing.

Will fire this one up tomorrow.
GHOST BLAAAAAADE!
Everyone, please play that game. I don’t care if you don’t rock with it aesthetically: all it takes is one play session to understand that it’s one of the most fun and chaotic shmups on PC right now.
