When it comes to character creation, do you prefer a boy or a girl?

It depends on the game. When I want to put myself in the game, I put a male character and other times I put a female character. I think it's half and half.

I always pick a woman. I've tried playing Mass Effect as broshep and just can't get into it.

If the fashion for men was as cool and flashy as for women, I might pick men, idk.

Never really had this internal "struggle" between picking boy or girl, I'm a boy I'll play as a boy, simple as.
There where times were I would start a new save file just to mess around with the female option, but would never create the file or anything, but if the game allows for a companion character such as Dragon's Dogma then I tend to make a complimentary female character to my male one, or if the game has no character creation but expects you to choose a portrait to represent your character, then I just make characters on the spot.

Guys in most games unless there's a gameplay reason not to. Girls in fighting games because jiggle physics and scanty outfits is a common feature of those games.

I play as girl characters probably 60-70% of the time.

I think most games that I play will have a guy as a protagonist so when I do get the option to play as a girl it is a nice change of pace.

Boys are restricted to second playthroughs. Ok not "restricted" but you know what I mean.

Despite being a woman with zero interest in men who is also not masculine in real life, I usually make male characters just because the armor is cooler 90% of the time and the beauty standards for female characters feel kinda awkward if the character creator doesn't get super granular. Also I get to make edgelord 5000; it's harder to make an edgelord looking character with female options (sad)

It depends, if it's an RPG where you can use magic and level up dex, I choose boy for strenght builds and dex/magic for women, because those are gay.

So true

Female avatar type almost universally has better clothing options, both in level of design and variety (MonHun historically has been a big offender here). Pokemon Ultra Sun is one of the few exceptions that has the dragon scales-themed outfit, which is male-exclusive.
Regardless, though, if you're going to be playing a game for a few hundred hours, you're likely to spend a significant part of that playtime staring at your character's ass, so it may as well be something you'll enjoy staring at.

I generally make guys, but I will make girls whenever I feel like it. It doesn't usually end up mattering too much to me what I end up picking though, because I always make my characters look weird if there's character creation.

Entirely situational, honestly.
Games with customization: Whichever gender/physique has better clothing, or aesthetic choices
Games that don't allow customization, or display worn equipment: Whichever design I like better (whichever is more androgynous)
simple as.
