Whats your opinion on pirating game because of their price?

I have never considered the question as to whether piracy is morally ok or not because I don't care. If it exists on the internet I will download it, preferably for free. I'll also buy games legitimately if I feel like it. Usually only smaller games where I know the actual devs will profit in some way. I really couldn't give the slightest fuck about not giving corporations money and nobody will ever be able to guilt me into giving one single ounce of fucks about a corporation losing money.
I know I love Sim4 but Jesus fucking Christ getting all DLC would cost more than I spent building my PC.
I calculated it out one day and it came to something like $1600 (Canadian). Sims 3 was like $90 for all the things.

Guys... we're all posting on a forum for a website dedicated to video game piracy. No kidding we're OK with pirating video games because of their price – can you imagine how much it would cost to play all the games you've downloaded from CDRomance!?

I don't really think "ethics" or "morals" plays into it at all. People have been stealing computer data for as long as computer data has existed and, with the notable exception of small-tier indie developers, pirates don't make up enough of the "potential audience" to impact bottom lines. Most pirates probably weren't ever going to spend money on the game to begin with, so, y'know, nothing ventured nothing lost.

I'm a fairly frequent sailor of the high seas. It largely started back when I was broke and couldn't afford or justify spending more than a small amount on games.

Nowadays, I only really buy games if it's something I actively want to support. I suppose that makes me a thief, but I feel so alienated as a consumer in this day and age that I really don't care to financially contribute to a company that would rip me off in a heartbeat. Again though, I like to purchase legitimately when it's something I feel deserves it.
I'm with you there. I pay if I feel what I consume is worth my money. I watch anime on pirate sites, and if I like the anime well enough that it deserves a place in my collection, sure, I'll buy it. I'm not hurting the hard-working animators anyway, they already got paid. Who I am hurting are the corporate overlords. Same with gaming, the artists, musicians, and programmers already got paid.

Someone else commented that we aren't entitled to free entertainment and that we don't deside if market values are fair or not. For one I never said I was entitled to anything, but you can't beat free stuff, and if said stuff is easy to take, like a rom on a website, then yes, I'll do it. I mean we are all just scraping by as it is, so if you CAN get something for free, why deliberately throw money away. But that also brings me back to the point that if I like your product and feel it deserves a share of my finances, then yes, I will give back in the form of money.

PS. can't say enough how much I love your avatar <3

Just saw a visual novel on steam for 20USD that you need to go out of your way to download a patch on a third party website if you want to see 18+ scenes (whole point of the game tbh, the story is kind of goofy). This made me start to think about how even though people have different opinions (game has mostly positive reviews on steam), some game are not worth spending money for. What's your opinion on pirating? Am I reading too much into it?

PS: the game is night shift nurses, very trashy/questionable fetish content so be warned.
My opinion is that go ahead honestly. A while back I wrote about how Nocturne HD is practically a ripoff at $70 when the only worthwhile thing it did was add voice acting. There's also bullshit like Mario 3D All Stars, Sonic Superstars being a shittier Sonic Mania that costs more than twice it's price tag, Sonic Origins being so dogshit that they had to re-release it, everything that EA did, etc. Nowadays, I'm pretty neutral on the idea of piracy, ESPECIALLY with anime. I hate the CrunchyRoll monopoly so much.

There are games where *not* pirating is unethical. Disco Elysium comes to mind, with the leveraged buyout scam of ZA/UM studio and subsequent firing of the original authors by a fraudster. Or when fucking Nacon distributed cracked copies of the Sinking City on Steam (even if Frogwares finally win the court case recently). Many example of devs being screwed really.

But Facebook torrenting 80+ TBs of books on piracy sites has pretty much proved to everyone that it's OK to pirate anything without even worry about it, I guess.

I pirate all the time. It has become a necessary in this age cause how scummy these gaming publishers have become. $100 just to play a game 3 or 5 days early!? F them, they can go bankrupt as if I care. I only buy games when they comes to a right price.

Also this wisdom still holds

Same here, since C64 times. I get most of my games from Fitgirl, Kaos or Gazelle. Of course I also still have a huge bunch of games on Steam, from time to time I buy games when I'm bored and have the feeling I need to spend some money.

I understand it since I pirate games I either can't afford or simply don't have the consoles for. That and a video game developer did a anti piracy thing and they said some wise words "If you can't afford a game, then help by spreading word of mouth." or something similar to that.

If something costs more than it's worth to you, I mean... it's your prerogative to decide whether you'll pay it anyway, pirate it, or skip all together. Rate with your wallet, ya know. If something consistently charges too much money for people to pay it, they'll have to drop their prices eventually.

That said, I only think this applies when you're willing to pay for things that ARE worth their cost when you can. If you're just doing it "because it's free" it's a little... sketchy. There's plenty of games and things I wish I could give MORE money just because I think it deserves it... like buying multiple copies of the same game on different consoles, or different versions... or a physical copy and a digital one.....

Personally, if I wanted to buy a new game I'll wait for a sale to buy it.

If it's an older game or a game that wasn't released originally in English, then I'll look for some other means of getting it. For example, there are a number of games I've played that never got an official english translation and if it wasn't for pirating I'd never get to experience them. If those games ever get released officially, then I might buy those releases of the game.

Pirating can still happen even if I buy games on Steam or on my PS5.

I sometimes use streaming services to watch anime, but there are way too many anime that I want to watch that aren't on streaming services. It's inevitable to use anime sites to watch anime especially if you want to watch something older than 15 years old.

It's not even moral relativism to recognize that there is theft, there is piracy, and there are different nuances to piracy. The whole "piracy is theft" thing is like an old meme come true.

If you're pirating games from actual indie developpers, you are actively not paying someone for their work. You are enjoying a work without patronizing its creator. Some devs are even okay with the practice; they understand the idea of not paying upfront. Some fight it like the plague, and I can certainly understand the position. With the "semi-indie" scene taking its roots, it's become even more complicated.

If you're pirating a AAA game... Those hundreds of people have already been paid, and thank god for that: they've been putting in the hours to make it all happen, and that's without considering unlawful labor practices. Feeling bad about it is like admonishing yourself for not shutting down the whole powerstrip at night. You're certainly not the core of the problem, at least, and there are more ways to show that you care than giving 30% to Valve on Capcom releases.

I only buy from Steam when there's a sale. Not because I'm a cheapo but because it's the only way I can afford it. I also "sample" games if I am not sure they will run on my potatotop. If it works and I intend to buy the game I delete the version I pirated. If there were more demos available I wouldn't have to do this.

Retro games? Pure piracy unless I come across something PS1that's cheap since I have one plus I can play them on my PS3 too. I have a GBC but the sound only works with headphones. It belonged to a relative and I have no idea what happened to it. And it's the Pokemon one too. Too bad.

In general, I agree with your sentiment. There are games that are simply not worth your money, even single digits. I've been burned by cheap games before, and in a handful of cases, those cheap games weren't even worth pirating. Piracy aside, sometimes you have to stop and consider the real question: is a select game worth your time? Purchase or pirate, you are still investing time into a game you (presumably) want to play, and you have no guarantee of enjoying it.

As for your question on piracy, I find it justifiable, especially when nobody is interested in preservation or just making certain titles freely available long after they leave the market. Beyond that, I would rather pay money for a game from an indie developer than buy a game from a dead development studio their publisher screwed over.

As for the game in question, this is certainly not worth the money or time. Going off one of the top reviews, it's goofy how the patch is bigger in size than the game itself.

Would you consider it theft if you read a book in its entirety inside a bookstore without purchasing it?

The current market gives me no reason or incentive to support it, so it gets nothing from me; the retro market is grossly overinflated and isn't something I want to support or incentivize; without archival and emulation, classic games will only stay in the hands of "collectors", or stuck on older consoles. Plus I learned how to use breakpoints to find last changed RAM addresses, which I would have never bothered to learn had I used actual hardware to play some of these games. I can't afford new stuff, so I would rather have complete control over the older stuff and get the most enjoyment I can out of it.
