what's your favorite castlevania game?

Symphony of the Night
Order of Ecclesia
Dawn of Sorrow
Aria of Sorrow
Super IV
Bloodlines
Circle of the Moon
Portrait of Ruin
Curse of Darkness
CV64

Roughly in that order.

seems to be. the dates show it being out a year later after the first, and most likely sharing the same sort of situation with zelda 2. there's no established rules, so they could do whatever they wanted to.

the main drawback is that the sub weapons are useless. the whip does nearly everything the sub weapons do. long range, diagonal hits, multi-hits. and the striking color design from the first game is gone. everything had specific colors due to the limited color pallet, and blue and orange are the main colors used, so nearly everything popped out and was eye catching.
Also Simon looks like he's gotten severe sunburns.

This one, but it is the only one I ever played. I really liked it and remember it being hard as fuck and was so happy when I beat it. Since no one has mentioned it, I guess it sucks ;_;

Castlevania II isn't a terrible game and it even has some interesting ideas for its time, but it has aged pretty badly and overall it's a very frustrating and confusing game.

that's mostly just the devs going crazy with having so many more colors to use. most nes games were limited to 4 colors at most on sprites. there's a lot more available on the 16 bit console.
could also just be his color pallet. certain color combos have more of an impact when used together. i've noticed when putting colors onto clothes for characters, that the skin tone would suddenly jump in brightness or darkness when next to darker or lighter colors.

Huh? I thought it is pretty straightforward which is why I liked it... Oh! I was a little confused by your post, this it not Simon's Quest NES, if that is what you were thinking. I was talking about Belmont's Revenge for GB.

And you know what, I completely forgot they are both "Castelvania 2" myself, I always just called it "Belmont's revenge". Does anyone know why they are the same sequel title?

Oh shit sorry lol never played the original Game Boy Castlevania games.

i found this on the wikipedia page:
Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge is a 1991 action-platform game developed and published by Konami for the Game Boy. It is the second Castlevania title for the Game Boy and serves as a sequel to the previous title, Castlevania: The Adventure. Belmont's Revenge is included in color in the fourth volume of the Konami GB Collection compilations. Set fifteen years after the events of Castlevania: The Adventure, Dracula returns and kidnaps Christopher Belmont's son Soleil at his coming of age feast, and turns him into a demon. With Soleil's mystical powers, Dracula retakes human form and rebuilds his castle, forcing Christopher to confront Dracula once again to save his son and Transylvania.

The Castlevania Adventure n Castlevania (Adventure) II: Belmont's Revenge is worth your time. the 1st one was a GB launch title but though archaic it is well-designed n a nice challenge. Belmont's Revenge is better in a QoL way kinda n is non-linear 2D Plat like Castlevania III NES n some of the other subsequent followups (ofc Metroidvanias bein non-linear is a given ^_^)

Castlevania Legends has a female protagonist n while there's nothing overtly wrong with it - it's pretty patronizingly generic in design like the SNES 'port' of Rondo of Blood (Vampire's Kiss can Kiss meh erse xD )

Top three? Probably Portrait of Ruin, Curse of Darkness (which I've been replaying, and have almost beaten again!), and... uhhh, Dawn of Sorrow I guess? The mid-aughts has been the best era for Igavanias.

I've been needing to actually beat a classic one though. Probably aiming for Rondo of Blood but to be fair, I'd like to clear Simon's Quest just to say I did. I've got the most experience and progress in the original. Oh yeah, and Castlevania 64 / Legacy of Darkness are also on my bucket list. But they're not quite the same as the original side-scrollers.

I can't really think of one particular Castlevania that's my favorite, but I would say either Symphony of the Night or Order of Ecclesia for the 2D metroidvania ones, and Curse of Darkness for 3D (granted I've only played it and Lament of Innocence for 3D ones, 64 looks promising on the outside). Curse of Darkness was way better than I was expecting and I liked Trevor's redesign in it to make him stand apart more visually from Simon, since they both look pretty similar in the NES games.
For classicvania it's really hard to pick one, and there's still classicvania games I need to play through. With that in mind I gotta say, Konami did a fantastic job on Haunted Castle Revisited. The original is interesting but not a game I really enjoy, and remaking it is what I wanna see more remakes do - take games that aren't all that great or have potential and fully realize them into something great.

Dracula X Chronicles (the PSP one?) and Harmony of Despair (even though I'm bad at it). I like Bloodstained Ritual of the Night even more than them, but I guess that technically isn't a Castlevania game.

Castlevania DS Trilogy

These games are the proper evolution to SotN because the DS is more close to the PlayStation than GBA. Yes I like the GBA games but I prefer the DS titles. It's don't help that Aria is literally carrying the GBA on it's back.

Aria of Sorrow and bloodlines these are like the best Castlevania games to me
And of course X86000/Chronicles (THE BEST REMAKE OF THE FIRST GAME FITE ME) and Rondo of blood
