what's your favorite castlevania game?

Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow, Rondo of Blood, Bloodlines and Order of Ecclesia.

  1. Rondo of Blood (PCE, PSP): Best gameplay of any old school CV game. The hidden stuff, branching paths, ability to backtrack (via menu) and get what you missed, and everything else just makes it a perfect platformer.
  2. Order of Ecclesia (DS): Takes a lot of MV ideas and makes a more complete game than the previous ones. Separating the areas into their own maps was a good idea, and the town as a central hub helps improve it over previous MV games.
  3. Symphony of the Night (PSX/SAT/PSP): Simple in some ways compared to other MVs, but the relatively higher resolution (compared to the portable games), CD quality music, variety of abilities, and 2D CD game charm all make it something magical.
  4. Super CV IV (SNES): Beautiful graphics and good use of SNES gimmicks. The multi-directional whip is an underrated little toy.
  5. Dawn of Sorrow (DS, hacked): This one gets this spot on the premise that I'm picking the hacked version (no more sealing circles). Otherwise, AoS would be a better pick.
  6. CV1 (NES/FC): Pretty good for a first game. Classic gameplay, though hacked versions make it a bit nicer.
  7. Aria of Sorrow (GBA): Good start to its own storyline. Better base game than DoS.
  8. Bloodlines (Gen/MD): An interesting take on the series. The more modern setting and the new characters make it stand out.
  9. Chronicles (PSX): Nifty graphics and music. A fair remake of the original, albeit not my favorite.
  10. CV2 (NES/FC): Underrated. Yes, it has a lot of quirks in the base game that needed more work, but a hacked version fixes up enough to make it pretty good for a NES game.

I don't like Super Castlevania 4. I know it is loved, celebrated and moonlit sacrifices are made in its name, but something is off, as far as I'm concerned.

super castlevania iv simon sprite is too big

so its is
seems to be. the dates show it being out a year later after the first, and most likely sharing the same sort of situation with zelda 2. there's no established rules, so they could do whatever they wanted to.

the main drawback is that the sub weapons are useless. the whip does nearly everything the sub weapons do. long range, diagonal hits, multi-hits. and the striking color design from the first game is gone. everything had specific colors due to the limited color pallet, and blue and orange are the main colors used, so nearly everything popped out and was eye catching.
