What video game remake would you consider superior to the original?

- Final Fantasy Origins (or Dawn of Souls) over the famicom originals
Origins retains the feel of the originals while giving the games a much-needed coat of paint (in my opinion). Dawn of Souls also adds new content to Final Fantasy I and reworks the D&D-esque magic charges into a MP system more in-line with the rest of the series (perhaps making the game easier as well).
{Yes I'm aware Origins is based off of the WonderSwan versions, apply my reasoning for Origins to them as well}

- Final Fantasy III (3D remake) over the famicom original.
Gives the onion knights names and faces, makes the game feel a little more cinematic and introduces many new additions like giving each party member different designs per job, making them stand out visually even if you're going with a party of four geomancers. There's also other things like the new music which I love dearly.

- Baroque (PS2) over the saturn original (depending on the day)
A bit of a hot take for sure, but I'm a fan of the awkward look translation of anime styles into 3D. I find some of the menus easier to navigate, the nerve tower itself is easier to navigate now that you're in third person and you don't have the turning radius of an aircraft carrier (which has more than once caused me a frustrating end). It may lose the atmosphere that made people fall in love with it and the translation may not be as perfect as the fan-translation, but I love it all the same.

We have ones for sad and angry but not just plain disagreement. The angry one can be triggering and the sad one is just confusing.
Exactly bro, we are on the same wavelength. like I expressed and tell RB it really if frustrating,
brcause you read said comment and think to yourself well I disagree, so Im not thumbing up,
but then don't want to offend withe the angry. I don't know why I said this all again, I think you perfectly understand. I mean if the mods in their infinate wisdom (doubt) could figure out a better disagree
symbol then the thumbs down, all the better. But something is necessary. Cool we worked things out.

I don't have any interest in FF Origins, I
Tried messing around with Baroque I think on the PS2 i think, it was weird
and I really didn't get anywhere.
Now Final Fantasy 3 and the rest of 1-6, I love the pixel remasters, they are
great remasters and a easy way for people to check out these classics (except FF2)
on modern machines.

Nobody has said Final Fantasy IV, but just about any of its remakes is better than the original to me. Especially the 3D remake. Not only the voice acting, but the acting in general, the emoting the models can do, improves every cutscene of the game, while it has a rebalanced, harder battle system with a better implementation of ATB.

Have you played HL Legacy? Basically 1998 HL w/ fixed bugs, BUNNYHOPPING, controller
support and a bunch of other shit. Its on steam Half-Life Legacy
I have! Every version of HL has bunnyhopping. The mod just made it easier by removing the speed cap Valve added to the game at some point, and giving the game auto jump.
I don't share your love for Blue Shift, but eventually may play the Black Mesa mod.

@Mopeybloke
haha I cant fault you for that brother, those of us who love Blue shift are a rare breed.
I also love Opposing Force a lot. And to make my self sound even weirder I HATE the
multiplayer one that everyone has been playing for like 35 years now, what is it
Counter Strike? Nah not for me. I'm sure it is excellent it was made by 1990s Valve,
but I don't do multiplayer games. It just won't fit into my gaming style.

Burned into my brain.

I love the Pixel Remasters too, it's a shame so many people seem to hate them when compared to the roms of them. It's the first time I actually played FFII all the way to completion and despite the weird way of leveling up skills and weapons it's actually got a pretty solid story and feels epic for a game from that time (although it's kinda short) I have the UMD discs of the PSP versions of FF and FFII but liked the Pixel Remaster versions better. FFII is the odd black sheep of the 6 but it's not all that bad. If it had the same leveling up as the others it would have been stellar. It's really worth it just to be able to play a 2D version of FFIII as a remaster instead of the 3D versions. The 3D FFIII is good too but I prefer the original touched up through the remaster

Sword of Mana (GBA)

Sword of Mana is a remake of Final Fantasy Adventure.

Adventures of Mana is another remake, but it's more like the original than Sword.

All are good though.

Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song. The original Romancing SaGa was a Super Famicom game and it's very rough. It's slow, broken and full of bugs and enemy encounters are ridiculous for the way the game's systems work. It was remade on the ps2 and remastered and rereleased a few years ago. It's basically an entirely different game built on the structure of the original and it's better in every way. The story's mostly the same but the gameplay was basically completely remade. There's really no reason to play the snes version other than to see just how bad it actually was.

My problem with the pixel remasters is they made the games too easy. I played through FF1 using auto battle from after the Marsh cave to the end of the game without actually having to do anything 90% of the time. I was able to beat Shinryu in FFV on a whim with no prep, no grinding and none of the items you should have to beat him. On the snes and even the GBA version I was wiped out almost immediately when I tried that. When I played through FF2 I was practically invincible until the last dungeon of the game. The only reason I couldn't auto battle through that one was because of those enemies that hammer you with status effects or are immune to physical damage. I also don't really like the remixed soundtracks. I prefer the Synthetic Origins MSU-1 tracks.

Gameplay wise yeah it sucks ass, but the actual story and plot surprised me since I was expecting something a lot more simplistic and basic than what it was. It had actual characters when the game just before it had nameless protagonists, and the stuff with the evil empire and political oppression was interesting I guess. Sort of the precursor to the kinda plots they did in the later games in the series. But yeah FFVIII and X are really good. My favorite is FFIX but a lot people think I'm weird for liking it as much as I do. On the topic of remakes another good one better than the original is the fan remake of Alien Breed 3D called Project Osiris. Alien Breed 3D was one of the best (if not best) Doom style games for Amiga PC but it was brought down by it's rather shitty graphics that were somehow worse than Doom despite being a bit newer. The remake is built using GZDoom and is a great faithful update to it. You can find it here (it's a free game)

OK you said FF8 is good, I don't care if you are a dude let's get married. I think I
found my soulmate. NAh jk At 53, I'm too young to get married. :loldog
I would think more people would think you are weird for liking 8, everyone hates it.
so your thing is 9 huh. I really like it also, I have gotten to various points, but never close to
finishing and also playing it on almost every device possible. My phone, tab, Chromebook,
actual PlayStation. I am basically waiting for the new remaster treatment to hopefully
play it to the completion. But dang I'm tired of doing the castle, the stupid knight, and
Steiner over and over. I could probably clear that first forest with my eyes closed lol
the furthest I remember getting is when you go to the swamp and get that weird thing that joins your party and eats everything. I feel like that's not even very far at all. Sounds like you prob finished it maybe you could break the news to me that I'm actually like only 3 hrs into the first disc or some crap like that. lol

As for an amiga, I never had one nor have I ever seen one in person. I was gonna ask
what country you live in before I saw NC. Than I said Oh he's probably a Tar Heel.

Nier Replicant Ver. 1.2244... is better than the original in almost every way, except for the soundtrack that lost edge with the new orchestral arrangements.

Killing Time Extended is a thoroughly enjoyable remake by Nightdive that looks pretty faithfull to the original and enhances it in important ways. I didn't play the original, but from playing it, the remake is an almost perfect game. It just misses a tip system when you get stuck in the game, as it's massive and the area design seems intentionally confusing and samey, with 10 different keys, 10 macguffins to find and many locked doors and entrances.

I only really learned about Amiga a few years ago from messing around with emulators for it (like WinUAE & FS-UAE) It's a nice older PC with a neat operating system (called Workbench) some of the games are better than the MS-DOS versions of them and there's quite a few good exclusives for it. It has a huge fan following and people still make new games for it. I've actually posted a newer game for it to the repo called The Shadows of Sergoth. As for FFIX I've beaten it twice, but since it's been years I can't really do well at going in depth about what happens in the later parts of the game. I do remember how in order to get the best weapons and armor you have to do the annoying and time consuming Chocobo mini game where you have to run around digging stuff out of the ground against a timer. You have to go around the whole planet doing it over and over while leveling up your Chocobo through it to get more access to different spots in the area you dig in (like gaining the ability to fly) Eventually you can find the final and best weapons and armor for the characters through it, but it takes like way too many hours. The hardest boss in the game is actually a secret boss that can be triggered only in the mini game area. You kinda really need a walkthrough to find all the secrets in that game since some of them are very vague and NPC characters didn't help much. I hate it when games require a bunch of extra reading to get the most out of them. Still it's a great JRPG tho.

@Kovlak
I know , thats not the point
Two big issues:
1. The game has A F*****G controller customize screen
download.jpg

2. Google this issue and look at the clusterfuck you get.
plug this in, pull that, out, exit the game, disable this, restart, enable that,
stand on one foot, wile rubbing your belly and tapping your head.............

This game will get NO MORE of my time!!!

The good games already have a fanbase so companies know they can already make a profit off of it. Most of them have out of date graphics, game mechanics, etc. so I can understand why they want to polish it up and release it on current gen consoles, it’s an easy way to make money.

I don’t disagree that terrible games need remakes but if you heard Superman64 was getting a remake, would you really be that excited? But if you heard a popular game you love was getting remade you would probably be looking forward to that more lol
Prime example of this in action: Bubsy 3D with fixed controls included as a part of the Purrfect Collection. When Atari announced that there was going to be an improved version of the infamous 3D platformer, a lot of people immediately asked, "Why?" Despite how infamous the game was, with the awkward controls being a common criticism among many critics and YouTubers, hearing that one of the game's most glaring flaws was being officially fixed didn't illicit excitement nor intrigue among the general public (moreso confusion as to why anyone would do it).

A lot of people are intrigued by failed art, many of which are willing to share it either for entertainment or for informative reasons, but most aren't compelled to try to actually take the list of reasons the piece of art in question failed and actually try to improve upon it or remake it learning from those mistakes. Anyone who does tend to get their motives and grip on their senses.

  • Resident evil 4 remake. It fleshed Ashley (she isn't as annoying as her og version anymore) and Luis (I loved the mines part) out and made them more likeable to me. Plus it improved separate ways, added more enemies models/variety, Luis is finally in the mercenaries mode and I prefer the areas in the remake. Maybe my only complain is that I think they should have kept the radio calls with Salazar (and his hat too lol) and Saddler (the latter barely interacts with Leon in the remake)
  • Resident evil 1 remake. I mean, it's way better than the original
  • Resident evil 2 remake
  • Crash team racing nitro fueled. It's basically crash team racing but with more characters and stages, and it has skins, different karts, etc. One of my favorite games of all time (I still think it should have been released on PC too, and it needed a 60 fps update as well)
  • Crash bandicoot 1 in the n.sanity trilogy. Unlike the og crash bandicoot 1, the remake let you save whenever you want and you can still get the gem even if you die in one of the levels (except for the 6 special gems)
  • Nier Replicant
  • Metal Gear solid delta snake eater
I would like to say silent hill 2 too, but tbh I love both the versions

CTR is my childhood favorite game. The Nitro Fueled remake is a perfect remake of it on all counts. I honestly can't even listen to the original soundtrack anymore after hearing the redone one. The PS1 ost sounds like MIDI music compared to the remake one. The gameplay and controls are way more refined too in Nitro Fueled. The extra tracks and characters are all welcome additions too. The N. Sanity remakes of the original trilogy are perfect too. There's really no reason to play the original ones anymore unless you want to see it in PS1 graphics or play it on a real PS1. BTW I posted the absolute best way to play the original version of Silent Hill 2 to the repo. Check it out here.

- Spyro Reignited Trilogy I was a huge Spyro 1 and 2 fan when they originally came out, never played 3 much because my copy wasn't cracked properly but my cousin had a better one he finished.
I'd say the Spyro remake trilogy is absolutely PHENOMENAL. Visually it's one of the best, most gorgeous and whimsical series of games of recent years and I still love the old graphics.

- Croc Remastered Not a remake, but a remaster...but more of a high fidelity remaster, Croc's remastered version is also wonderful. I always adored the first Croc but after Spyro came out I lost the ability to play it due to its tank controls. The Remaster has excellent, normal controls which elevated the game back to my all time favorite 3d platformers again.

- Metroid Zero Mission was definitely a masterpiece, for me, it's the definitive version to experience the first Metroid, tho that's not saying that the original isn't atmospheric and great to play through still.
