What makes people go vegan?

Any hunters in here? I legit feel like hunting should be required past a certain age if you wanna eat meat, as well as a trip to a beef or chicken mill. There's a real disconnect between the circle-of-life style phenomena that is hunting, and the massive meat industry. Where I'm from, if we don't thin out the deer population some they start dying off from disease and starvation, and are more likely to die on the road. I don't like killing, but my hunting deer is actually beneficial to both our ecosystems. But if I had the money, and wasn't allergic to soy, I'd cut factory meats out of my diet today. It's legitimately fucked up how we treat cows, pigs, and chickens... Fuck turkey's though, they assholes.

No, I tend to not consider myself a useless human being. In the last years I quit killing even flies, I'd rather go hunting human being than any kind of animals.
Even if I'm theoretically a human being myself, I don't value human life as others do.

I was vegan for about two years. there was a combination of reasons why I started transitioning to a plant based diet; general aversion to eating meat (texture, anything with bones), learning about the meat industry (mainly dairy but across the board) in the US.
i'll say that a vegan diet is broad and there a tons of good and bad ways to achieve that. my early days of raw vegan diet consisting of mainly small portions of fruits nuts & vegetables was actualy not healthy! (perhaps if i was a rat it might be)
but after learning how to prepare plant based meals & researching different meat/protein alternatives i was able to find a lot of different things that kept me full & not emaciated, and it became the norm for me more or less.
Once i moved in with a previous partner i didn't really have the funds to buy plant based food for just myself, as they didnt really want anything to do with that so i gave it up. & for a long time afterward it was hard eating meat and still is. not in the financial spot to be buying my own food but i intend to switch back once i have an income. craving a japanese style vegetable curry typing this out

I encourage everyone to look into eating more plant based options, even if you have no interest in going vegan it's valueble i think to at least see what's available in your area, what you can afford & can encorperate into your current diet etc. and try to buy less animal products overall.

friend up above who is so woke-paranoid and meat-indoctrinated he forgot India exists in his genious rant.
I didn't forget that India exists, it just isn't the vegan fantasy land that you seem to think it is. Chicken curry is popular in Punjab and Kashmir, curry in Goan often includes seafood, in Bengal and Odisha they have a strong fish-eating tradition with stuff like macher jhol and they also commonly put mutton in their curry. In Karala and Tamil Nadu they often put chicken, fish or mutton in their curry as well.

And that's just curry.

As has already been explained to you, India is a country that suffers from extreme poverty and the diets there are shaped by that unfortunate reality. It's not some vegan paradise where everyone sits around and does yoga all day, they're hungry and those who can afford it will absolutely eat meat and animal products.

I don't know what you're problem is but you're being really obtuse in this thread.

And what does any of this have to do with "woke"?

You tried to present non-meat diets as some sort of newfangled western culture thing, I reminded you India exists, now you are derailng like mad trying to save face. I never said Inidia is all vegan, but you seem to be in real need of a strawman to punch your frustration out, so yeah sure, I guess somebody must've said that in this thread, good job showing them their place. And you still not getting how wrong you are on whole India is poor angle is hilarious.

You tried to present non-meat diets as some sort of newfangled western culture thing
No. I gave examples of some reasons that some people might choose to go vegan and the examples I gave were all people who I know irl. I then said that what those individuals all had in common was that they lived much (or all of) their lives in America. I then said that veganism is no different than a fad diet, and that fad diets seem to be a pretty big part of Western culture and that they're not much of a thing here. Never at any point did I say that veganism is exclusive to America or that someone has to live in America to be vegan. You're accusing me of making a strawman but that's literally what you did. Either that or you have exceptionally poor reading comprehension ability, which would also explain why you seem to believe that comment was a "woke rant"
you seem to be in real need of a strawman to punch your frustration out
With the exception of my original comment in this thread, I have only responded directly to things that you said. If you're going to accuse me of arguing a strawman than point it out.
how wrong you are on whole India is poor angle
"The 2023 Multidimensional Poverty Index Report finds over a third of all poor people in the world live in South Asia—which is around 389 million people. India contributes significantly to this number, accounting for almost 70 percent of the increase in extreme poverty."

Yous said it's "part of western culture", as in you attribute it to western culture, totally ignoring thousands of years of history that India has on the subject. But sure instead of actually quoting what you said, let's just change what you said and pretend that that's what you meant all along. I frankly don't mind cause even with that piviledge you still seem heel bent on proving yourself incapable to spend 20 minutes to read up on some basic history.

I take it these are the stats for the last 3-4 thounds years, right? You know what culture is right? Or do I have to provide a wikipedia link to that as well?

There you go proving my point again:
I don't think it's exclusively an American thing, but I think that fad diets in general (not limited to just veganism) are a part of Western culture.

I'm going to bed.

I don´t know why and I don´t care if your a vegan be vegan if you must. If I´m gonna respect you being vegan then respect me eating meat.

Don´t tell me what to do and I will not tell you what do to.
I guess as long as its not harming others its alright.

Now the last part why someone would go vegan. Because they think they can lose weight probably, or are too scared of the thought of an animal dying. You can go vegan, for a while have have AMAZING results as you are effectively going into a full detox mode (you can do similarly on a water diet but much faster); But plants can't give you everything you need. After about 2 years (if the youtuber vegans channels back in 2019 were anything to go by) they develop terrible debilitating diseases which is purely from malnutrition, because certain nutrients they had stockpiled in their cells/liver when they started is now empty. Certain fatty acids and vitamins you just can't get elsewhere. Those vegans have some fish or a hamburger and the problems instantly went away.

So long and short. Go vegan/vegetarian if you want, but set time aside, one meal a month or something to have some meat. We don't need a lot of it to get by, but you do need it.
ehh so i have some thoughts.
Vegan youtubers make up a small minority of a much larger group, and of those all have their own ideas of how to live as vegan. while i dont keep up with vegan youtube anymore, one creator i used to watch frequently was Unnatural Vegan, who regularly releases videos disproving a lot of talking points made by more extremist, fringe vegan youtubers or groups. Her videos were really informative when I was first reading up on vegan diets and i'm glad i found her instead of, like, freelee the banana girl.

Yes malnutrition is a thing but so commonly it happens by over-restrictive diets that don't take into account the various vitamins and supplemental nutrients that you don't get by eating buckets of kale. (maybe kale was a bad example because it has a lot of vitamins actually lol) I've definitely seen vegan youtubers promote dangerous vegan diets, but i've also seen an uptick in all raw meat diets being promoted as well which are just as extremist and unhealthy. Neither are new, but the "veganism=malnurishment" argument is easily disproven when you meet (meat?) real vegans who have been living plant based for decades, healthily.
There are numerous ways of being able to meet all of your dietery needs without meat or animal products, fatty acids and vitamins included, without resorting to taking five horse pills to make up for what eating five bananas in a row can't give you.
And while trendy, extreme plant based diets are a thing, more so in the last decade with the rise of conversations about veganism, dismissing the movement as a whole discounts the fact that people have been doing this for a while now.

another thing i'd like to note, I would look into more recent & peer-reviewed research regarding dieting and nutrition, as Harvey Diamond is considered a quack; a quick google search turned up this article by dr. James Kenendy who did an extensive write up disproving much of what he and his wife/co-author Marilyn wrote about in their diet books.
Not attacking you btw! their books have been widely circulated since the 1980's despite neither of them (seemingly) having any background in nutrition.

Maybe, maybe not. I know his books did wonders for me. I haven't fully read the books since... god... 1997?... But the intro of the books usually is their background and what they are qualified in. I can't recall if it was nutrition and being a doctor, or being a vet and a doctor (and overlapping the two). And i'd rather go to and trust a vet than a doctor today.

Heh, GF's family keeps giving us like 200lb of meat each October, some of it just meat they don't have room for. Then i'll take their freezer burned meat and either can it, or use in stews (i don't care if the texture is odd, stew reconstitutes and breaks the meat down anyways)

Ummm... yeah i don't see how it would. Geez... now it sounds like nutcase conspiracy theory, not Alex Jones level (who seems right more often than wrong), but like Launchpad McQuack saying the cows are going to take over... (yes there's a cartoon involving cows and killer potatoes)
Wait, I just caught this… Alex? Jones? Y’all have fun with this thread, I’m out.

I saw that too. I chose to ignore it because I didn't want this thread to become about that.

We're talking about why people go vegan and veganism in general, not... whatever the fuck horrible ethically bankrupt mess bringing up AJ would lead to.

Back to the topic, I've seen some of the more typical misconceptions (some of which are spread by self-acclaimed vegans themselves).

Veganism is Meat = Bad
Eating meat is simply not inherently evil. The death of animals will take place no matter what. Would there be anything wrong with eating an animal that's died of natural causes (assuming it's still healthy to consume)? Obviously not. The problem is causing needless suffering on another creature.

Veganism is Animals > Humans (or Vegans Hate Humans)
No. Some vegans an vegetarians hate humans, but that's not what being vegan is about. It's simply not being human-centric and acknowledging the rights and needs of other existences.

Being vegan involves prioritizing animals over humans at the expense of humans.

No. A house is burning, who do you save first: the baby or the dog?
Whatever anyone may answer, that's not the moral dilemma that vegans face. We have enough resources that we do not need to exclude humans for the sake of decreasing animal suffering. Also, helping animals very often helps humans, even when it comes to the consumption of the animals. Very often, the more cruel the conditions at an meat plant are, the less healthy the food will be. Mistreating the animals has NEVER been a necessity, it's always been the result of doing what's easiest and cheapest.

Veganism is merely a fad in a privileged country.
Is access to higher education, cleaner roads, more time and money for hobbies, and better quality of life in general also an American fad? Obviously not. Being a country where people have more options, more progressive ideas have space to be developed in the US, that does not make the idea wrong or not worthy of consideration. A lot of spoiled liberal white girls who are not good at arguing hate racism - does that make racism an invalid idea?

Personally, I have my fingers crossed for vat-grown meat. Long shot it’ll ever be affordable in my lifetime, but I can wish.

this vid perfectly sums up my views on them.
My views on vegans are summed up with this video:

Vegans rarely respect meat lovers though. There is a reason they're hated so much.

Dude for real, how many people who are totally unqualified to do so told you you must eat meat vs how many told you mustn't? Meanwile you come to a thread that specifically asks people for rationale of being vegan, where most do exactly that and just share their experience and at most claim that you may not eat meat if you choose so, and say what essentially amounts to "shut up, I don't wanna hear about it". I get it, screeching vegan meme's spooked you, but gotta stop to think about it sometimes, especially when it's the topic of the discussion.

Not a single Frack has told me to eat it´s my chose because I love meat.
But as I said if you wanna be vegan be vegan I don´t give a flying fuck and yes I don´t wanna hear about it. Honesty I don´t wanna hear about who you fricked either or who you love or not what god you believe in or what political side you on.

Keep your life problems and habit to your self.

But maybe I should ask how many unqualified people have said being vegan and bang animals will save the earth. Dear god cow farts are killing earth. NO HUMANS are killing earth with other pollution.

Anyway I just said my peace no one told you need to like. And it if you want me to respect vegans then fucking respect my opinion the same.

As I said billions of time respect is earned not given and not a one sided deal.
lol, chill, I'm not saying it's not your choice, what I mean is that for every vegan screecher you ever saw there are probably ten old farts that would screech no less in the opposite direction and you don't care cause you agree with them, but can't miss a thread about veganism, an excellent opportunity to embarrass yourself.

Chill? Im chiller than some one high on weed. The ones that needs to chill are vegans my good they go up in arms every time maybe if they eat some meat they would be less bloody angry.

Also you don´t see me go demonstrate you don´t see me attacking people left and right based on that they eat nor do I call people murders and so on.

I don´t throw oil on paintings nor do I go to the store and pure milk on the floor ans scream animal abuse.

Embarress my self ?? No im not. I was honest becuse OP Fracking asked What makes people go vegan? And unlike Vegans I don´t pretend to be an expert on anything. So I was honest and said I don´t know but also I don´t fucking care becuse I got better thing to do than worry why lunatics are lunatics.
chad animal rights activist - get all the glory and chicks
virgin vegan - get all the blame and is still virgin
you - so mad can't tell the difference

Veganism is merely a fad in a privileged country.
It is now and it always was, people made a fool out of vegetarianism (and veganism) since at least the 18th century: limiting one's eating habits was something only the wealthy could afford, and so such behavior was criticized a sign of decadence among the nobility

Whoa, the revalations in this thread are extraordinary, first we learn that India has most people who choose to not eat meat because everyone there is poor and it's a cope, then we learn that not eating meat is only for the rich and it's a fad.
