What is your views related to Pirating?

I can't remember the book author's name but they said something like "if your country has a gdp per capita less than $10000 then go ahead and pirate my book".
World Bank
I'm sure that made a lot of people go "uuuuh lemme check the GDP per capita in my country....dammit we're too rich"

As a person who was literally born with it starting with the Nintendo DS:

Pirate something that you don't have that cannot be purchased through normal means (this includes purchases that are borderline a thousand dollars to obtain alone), not a current gen console. Dump your own games if you have the tools to do such if you want to "Pirate" them so badly.

it's not about pirating, it's about preserving the legacy of videogames

Humor me this but after all this time on the internet. I think the solution to world peace is the same as the solution to internet software piracy. You see, distribution. the Steam solution. there is a demand for war that will be met. you just have to provide a more efficient distribution system, ie, Metal Gear Solid 4. Hideo Kojima was right again and. we should find a way to put Gabe Newell in charge of the US Armed Forces and go from there, its predictably so but incredibly ballsy of Gaben to say "we made a better alternative to piracy." He thinks mercantilism will outlive the innate human desire to intentionally steal from companies and individuals and share random shit that entertains us with others. And while he's good enough that he could almost do it. Steam won't last forever in this game of distribution like the Half-life 2 leak incident (granted their country has no strict laws on copyright and piracy and wont land them a lawsuit or some sort of legal trouble)

sharing is caring

meanwhile pretty bold of yall to assume you can steal anything

Pirate my programs pirate my games!

If the company isn't scummy they get my money but if its blizzard who shits on its own IPs and allows sexual harassment to run rampant in their offices while they recycle the same WOW races and call them "new" yeah no they ain't getting a benny from me heck I will hesitate to even hand them my nail....that's how much I despise that company.

I have to ask you this , if the game you are buying isn't getting taken care off pretty well by its developers why invest in it? I see buying that game as an investment to put my money into improving the game quality if that doesn't happen why hand them money to make something I don't like? To make the new FIFA game while CNC generals is still not getting any updates? Lol no I need my money to help make things better not end up producing the next virtual casino or pay to win game.

The only one I would actually buy their product is winRAR and age of empires games they actually give the fans what they want and treat the game well deserves my money.

It also is about affordability can you afford buying this game? That's something you gotta ask yourself about before proceeding with buying the game.

Getting a legal copy is always better as you guarantee to get the game fully some mfs remove stuff from the game like soundtrack or intro cutscenes cuz "size" or whatever its peak stupidity which makes piracy a bit annoying to deal with as if you are like me who wants a clean cut copy of the very original game you will need to find a site that has this perk to it usually torrents are the best when it comes to full games but the seed thing can slow things down and legally will always be safer.

So pick your poison comrades.

If it's old (let's say, over two decades) I'm fine.

If it's too recent (less than 5 years) I'd feel scrupulous.

i enjoy this convo. been a part of forums in the past where the mere mention of pirating was cause for either a ban or social exile.

in terms of games & software, if the money from the product being sold doesnt go towards the developers themselves (old games getting rereleased 20-30 years later by their publishers, basically any AAA game) then i dont feel bad pirating it.
why would i pay blizzard executives $20 for diablo 1 when none of the development team even works at blizzard anymore? Why pay them for their newer games when they treat their employees horribly and will lay them off no matter how much money the game in question makes?

with indie games i usually always buy them legitimately to support the developers, though sometimes they're explicitly cool with people pirating their titles anyways.
shoutout to the dwarf fortress devs for basically saying "yeah were millionaires now go ahead and pirate"

It's based af and i will never pay for any digital good ever in my life. I don't care about indie developers or artists. I only pay for physical stuff.

Pirate something that you don't have that cannot be purchased through normal means

It depends on the situation, but this is usually my attitude. If the games are hard to come by and/or unnecessarily expensive, then I will take the piracy route. If I want to play a game I sold many years ago, but I am not paying well over $100 to get it back, however I did recently pick up Rock n Roll racing for the SNES for $40.

I've been pirating shit since I was a kid, and I'll be doing it when I'm old. I started out of necessity in order to see certain things, when you're 12 and like Superman, you don't have a car or the money to go track down certain old issues that have no reprints. or know anyone with a copy of Lunar II for ps1 to borrow, and your mom probably isn't going to lend you a credit card to buy it on ebay. certain episodes of TV shows weren't on video or dvd, and who the hell knew when those specific episodes would be on again.

now it's a bigger mix of factors then just I'm a kid and have no other way to read/play/watch something. Sometimes it's that they're impossible to find or unavailable for purchase, other times it's only available on secondary markets for collectors prices, other times I just really don't want to support something but would like to at least check it out myself to form an opinion and join a cultural zeitgeist. I at least try to buy stuff I like if I can get it. If I really like a new movie I'll go buy the 4k disc when I can. Other stuff it's just cost effectiveness. I don't play a lot of modern games because for the amount of a new system and a couple games, I can mod or get a couple of older ones and load them up with stuff I couldn't buy directly now if I wanted to. Why pay for a ps5 and 3 games when for the same price I could buy a dreamcast, a ps3, and a Saturn, and stuff for access to every game they made for them on there?

It's simple.

Whatever it is, I want it. I have no dissertation to give. GIMMIE GIMMIE!

Neutral, i tend to just buy what ever game i want to play if it's available for purchase. I'm all for video game preservation though.

Hahahaha, sure.
If you're being sarcastic I would ask you how you'd react if you worked on building a car but someone said "sorry but that one's mine".

Artists are making creative efforts.

Now the copyright laws are mostly to the publisher's pocket than the artist and this is the main issue.

The public domain should be lowered for sure but let's not act as if artists should work for free, they cannot eat nor pay a mortage with visibility.

As for myself I'd buy a remaster only if there are significant changes.

As long as it's not owned by an indie company I say go for it.

Yes, i would download a car.

If i really like it, i can be inclined to buy the product just to support the creator. I have done this with plenty of games/movies/books in the past.

I will only buy a remaster, if its at a reasonable price, and have enough upgrades that warrant getting it.

But, if the creator is dead, is free real state.

"Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem. If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable."
-Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve Corporation.

It's in my blood, Dad showed me Limewire and it was all downhill from there. Granted if it weren't for scalpers, Nintendo being allergic to sales for most of my life as a customer (I'm a Sony Baby) I would probably have a larger library of legit hardware. If I do like the game I will go out of my way to purchase it provided it's not in the $100s. But as it stands if it's Nintendo... ARHG! Oh yeah but not indie titles, I might try before I buy but I'll buy to complete it, unless of course the creator is milking their fanbase by holding the most recent update on patreon for 8 years and missing the due date by 3 years and conveniently uses Covid as an excuse to push back development and not to all milk their underserved hoard of fans in a niche genre...
