What did you play today?

I finally got to try Sonic Frontiers through my brother's PS Plus while catsitting for him.
Man, this game BLOWS. Everything about it just feels completely pointless. I get that they were going for a sort of sandbox experience, but when every single challenge is a little jumping puzzle or some inane matching minigame, or a really weird fight, it just feels completely hollow. Combined with a truly dogshit nothing of a story, a bland PS3-inspired world, and an incredibly weird and serious presentation who dripfeeds the already nothing plot to you in just about the worst ways possible, and a really sad attempt at a soundtrack (the techno cyberspace music was overall pretty neat, but the collecting of old music to replace the ambient OST just made it feel even more soulless), it's almost offensively boring.

HOWEVER, the controls are just top-notch. Easily the slickest controls in a 3D Sonic game I've ever played, and the movement in and of itself is insanely addictive, so I endured six or seven hours of the game (got to Tails' island) just messing around with the movement until I really couldn't take it anymore.

You should try Shadow x Generations, that game is what Frontiers basically should have been, coupled with the same smooth controls but the game overall being just about right playtime and with far more varied stages

I liked original Generations but I hear the new Shadow stuff is way different?
Controls differently, and has abilities like chaos control, the mini-hub that's similar to Frontiers but less bloated and more downsized. And yeah, if you liked Generations, it's basically more of that (and a good OST to boot)

I started the Tales of Phantasia remake on PS1. It's the only Tales game I've ever been able to tolerate for more than a few hours, and I think part of that is because it reminds me of emulating it in 4th grade (and later in middle school playing the crappy GBA remake). Still never beat it though so maybe I'll remedy that this time around. The original SFC release is no doubt a swan song for the console tech-wise but I always found the palette to be slightly washed-out so I prefer how the PS1 remake looks. Amazing soundtrack too.

Not a big Sonic fan but from what I saw it looked like the worlds were huge and empty with a bunch of typical Sonic obstacles (rails, jump/speed pads, etc) strewn about. It also seems like a massive missed opportunity to design the islands as generic biomes rather than themes like casino/carnival/city/what have you.

Finally played Baldur’s Gate 3 multiplayer with two friends now that the last patch is out.

It’s super fun, but I find that I get incredibly annoyed whenever they want to explore because I like having a goal, and that my friend who explicitly told us he didn’t want to lead goes ”hey we should to xyz thing first!” every three minutes.

That’s on me though, not them, because it’s a game about running around in the woods lol

Today I finished Ace Combat 2 (PSX) again, following the B route this time and unlocked the Free Mission mode. There's still two missions left to unlock but that would take finishing the game two more times and I feel like it's time to play something else::eggmanlaugh
