1. 28 Days Later
My favorite movie ever. It has an impressive atmosphere, excellent soundtrack, so much subtext I discover new layers of meaning to it even 23 years later and it remains the only scary zombie movie I have seen.
2. Children of Men
My favorite cyberpunk-ish dystopian thriller. It has a lot of substance, excellent dialogue and characters (Jasper and Syd are some of my favorites, as well as Theo's excellent portrayal of burnt-out Theo regaining his fire after discovering Kee), one of the best long-take action sequences ever filmed, an excellent soundtrack and so much worldbuilding in the set details you kinda have to pause for the freeze-frame bonuses in just about every scene.
3. Idiocracy
My favorite comedic dystopia (as good as Brazil is, it's not nearly as funny). It gets even funnier when you realize things BRAWNDO- THE THIRST MUTILATOR are loaded with electrolytes- which include sodium- so they've basically been salting the earth with a Gatorade knockoff. I want a sequel called Idiocracy 2: Upgrayedd Now where Joe/Not Sure must attempt to win reelection against Upgrayedd who is not only smarter than Joe but a ruthless pimp.
4. Pineapple Express
My favorite stoner comedy ever. I don't even have to be stoned to watch it to LMAO at it so hard I wake the neighbors. Although it does make me wanna get stoned...
5. Atomic Blonde
My favorite Charlize Theron action movie, yes, I like it even more than Fury Road. It's brutal, it has an amazing soundtrack and it kept me guessing as to who Satchel was until to the big reveal at the end. It's also based on the comic "The Coldest City" as well.
6. Bushwick
Still my favorite Second American Civil War movie ever, even after Alex Garland's excellent movie. It helps that soundtrack is composed by none other than Aesop Rock. It also helps that it's one of those "non-stop action thrill rides from start to finish", with hardly any downtime in between the first scene the horror-movie esque ending. Spoilers: mostly everyone dies.
7. Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas
My second favorite stoner comedy, and unlike Pineapple Express this one doesn't make me want to get stoned- it more reminds me of why you should never combine stimulants and psychedelics. Otherwise, you'll get to see Benicio Del Toro with snake eyes waving a gun in your face and ranting about the devil.
8. TIE - Zombieland and Zombieland 2: Double Tap
I like both of them about equally, and the sequel was IMO the best sequel we could've gotten to Zombieland. They are also legitimately good action horror movies, too.
9. The Suicide Squad (2021)
I really don't care for superheroes in general, regardless of the medium they appear in. I do, however, really like the ultra-gory Supervillian/Antihero action comedies that have become a thing as of late. This one is my favorite. Polka-Dot Man's insanity and Peacemaker and Bloodsport's constant rivalry and dick-measuring contests when fighting enemies, allies or each other are hilarious.
10. Mad Max: Fury Road
The best Mad Max movie. I think most people agree with me.
