The Iron Giant, it's an animated kids movie but you'll absolutely love it (and cry afterwards)
Here in the Uk the Iron Giant would almost be guaranteed to play on tv around Christmas. Other great but depressing animated movies are ‘Watership down’ and ‘The plague dogs’

British animated movies are known for being depressing as hell. These 2 are no different. The plague dogs and Watership down

Submission (1976 IMDB tt0076668). This is the most depressing film i have ever seen, i really mean its very very depressing, nihilistic and GRIM.
Cannibal Holocaust will make you hate humanity and directors.

Oh, The Boy In Striped Pajamas... I've watched it on school with my teacher and classmates. A girl even cried in the end. It was a cool experience, but I'm happy that I've watched on school and not alone, 'cuz drama movies aren't my thing.

Eye of God (1997), criminally overlooked. I also shed a tear to Nickel Boys (2024), what a gut-punch ending.

It's not a "tearjerker" as much as "a terrible time that stays with you", but if you can stomach subtitles and really violent movies, I've seen Martyrs (2007/2008) about twice a good while ago and it's stayed with me all that long.

One final warning, for emphasis: it's not the fun kind of gore.

Is it a super smart film? Not really, but it's not dumb either, and it does broach a lot of hard/heavy themes. Is it revelling in nihilism? Yes, but sometimes, that's what you're looking for, so I might as well make the recommendation.

... Also: took me a while to recognize that your pfp is from Remember11. I never finished it, but is there like a cool handshake for people who've played at least part of the -Infinity series? Can there be?

Ah man, I remember watching Martyrs. My sister is a big horror buff and made me watch it. That movie was so dreary, misogynistic and pointlessly nihilistic to the point of absurdity. The only emotion it drew from me was the desire to chuck the disk in the trash bin, lol. I'm glad we moved on from that Saw/Hostel era of torture porn.

First off, I gotta write down "pointlessly nihilistic" somewhere. It's perfect.

Second of all, I agree with all your points, though I'd argue the movie has even less respect for the mentally ill than it does for women. But "dreary and nihilistic" is kind of the point. If you felt the movie was "dreary and nihilistic"... You've watched the movie.

I'm not saying the experience is an enjoyable one, but that was the point. It's a feature-length feel-bad film. It opens on a horrific mass-killing and you spend a good amount of time trying to parse what happened and what it means. It doesn't want you to enjoy it. And if you're okay with that, it's a well-shot movie that knows how to pull the rug from under you.

I find it insulting to the audience to force them to endure such a mentally exhausting and miserable journey and have no sort of payoff for all that. The movie is a giant middle finger to the watcher.

What does "having watched a movie" mean to you? Does it mean "feeling satisfied, warm and toasty inside"? That's one version of it, and it's perfectly okay to want that from your movie watching experience. But that's not all there is to cinema.

This topic asked for movies that makes people "sad & depressed afterwards". I shot my shot.

Oh, I'm not criticizing you. The memories of that movie triggered me, lol. It think it is a fine choice, although I felt less depressed and more angry at the movie.

As far as answering your question, a movie must leave me feeling like there was a point to spending the 2-3 hours watching it as opposed to doing something else. It is a poorly defined requirement for a movie, but that's how I see it.
