What anime/manga changed your taste?

Sweetness and Lightning. At the time I had only ever seen Death Note and Sword Art Online, so the idea that an anime could be so simple and peaceful was foreign to me. Now slice of life is my favorite genre. Its nice to escape the whole "fate of the world" stuff from every other anime sometimes.

I can pinpoint with utmost certainty it was Galaxy Express 999

I remember reading Beck when I was around 11 or 12 (when almost all I'd read/watched until then was Battle or Sports shonen) and I think I owe a lot of my current taste to it. I couldn't say it like that back then, but seeing the band members struggle for years and years, with all of life's ups and downs along the way felt very natural and human. I should re-read it, it's been a while.

I always like shounen, 95% of the anime I've watched since childhood are shounen. Maybe some with slice of life contents, but mainly shounen. So the answer coul be any anime from the '80 or '90.

I remember reading Beck
I haven't gotten to reading Beck at all, I've rewatched the anime hundred pf time but never read a single page of the manga. It's kinda weird for me to think about since the anime is in my top 10.
Not a manga in particular but perhaps Tezuka's work in general.
I need to get into Tezuka's work, Thousand and One Nights, Pluto, and Astro boy are the only ones I've read. Pluto only half counts since it's based on his work. Any recs?

Black Jack. Definitely Black Jack. It's my favorite of his works and one of my favorite mangas of all time.

As for a series that changed my taste, I think it would surprisingly be Bleach. Until like a few years ago, I didn't really care for a lot of shonen manga and thought they were all the same until I watched the Bleach anime and read the manga.

You really should, the anime stops very early in the manga's story.

Neon Genesis Evangelion
It's not the first anime I watched, but the way it handled it's characters made it believable.
And finishing the show allowed me to view othrr shows more criticaly.

The slower paced of the middle part of the show helped me appreciate other slower paced shows like Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolize, Bokurano and eventually led me to Kino no Tabi the 2003 version.

Probably Cowboy Bebop and Frieren Beyond Journey's End.

Bebop showed me what's possible with truly high quality anime.

I've had a harder time enjoying a lot of anime since watching Frieren, because many of them just are not as smartly and maturely written and presented.

Probably... Les Miserables: Shojo Cosette.

I didn't even know they made anime outta western books, but now I wanna go through all of them, from Maya The Bee to Anne Of Green Gables.

I used to dislike Gundan Wing because I was somewhat a purist when it came to real robots.

Then, one day I came across Mobile Fighter G Gundam and It was the perfect blend between good action and over the top cheese.

While the writers never went over the edge in regards to the seriousness of war and weapons of mass destruction, the story was cared for enough that you felt that there was a solid plot with real stakes at the end of it all.
G Gundam.jpg

It reminded me how Future Police Urashiman handled comedy in a series that had to deal with crime in a futuristic noir setting except instead of the mafia it was geopolitics.

So because of that series I gave Gundam Wing a chance and I wasn't disappointed, and while I still don't love it but I no longer hate it.

At time it broke realily and had those Matrix like fights that feel so out of place in Gundam but if you bypass those the overall feeling is like those Starship Troopers OVAs from the 80s.

Today I'm happy to say that Because Fighter G Gundam I'm no longer a purist when it comes to real robots, if theres genuine care then its bound to be good.

Personnaly I think it's Kaiji, Paranoia Agent, Hokuto No Ken and Kinnikuman (and a bit of Jojo too)

I'm watching Kaiji and I really like it as well as the message behind.

Evangelion

it makes me appreciates moment and hardworking after watching it and being a motivation without any specific reason for me to change to a better person, somehow

but not the tv series or EoE but instead the last rebuilds movie

It was just too good and can change any person, but i think the movie not gonna had that much impact if you dont watch the tv series and EoE before

Yep def anyone should try marathon evangelion in this order

Tv series->death and rebirth(optional)->EoE->watch all the rebuilds from the first to the last

Its a normal order lmao

I'd say Berserk, Claymore and Nekojiru shaped my manga tastes.
For anime it was a lot of OVAs from the 80s and 90s. Riding Bean, Wicked City, Lodoss, etc.

Although special mention to Kill la Kill as that was the only anime I actively followed weekly lol.

Dude Kaiji is so good, I didn't realize how much I'd like it when I started reading.
The fact that to me the 2 part that got an anime adaptation are like an appetizer for how the next parts are so goods. Like I always remember when I started part 3 kinda underwhelmed by the whole setting (mahjong game in a illegal casino's staff room), then the antagonist came in and, wow, maybe one of the most uniquely written antag i've ever read in my life.

Washizu? I need to see that part once I'm done with the second game arc in the anime.

I really like Mad House.
