What anime/manga changed your taste?

Sweetness and Lightning. At the time I had only ever seen Death Note and Sword Art Online, so the idea that an anime could be so simple and peaceful was foreign to me. Now slice of life is my favorite genre. Its nice to escape the whole "fate of the world" stuff from every other anime sometimes.

I can pinpoint with utmost certainty it was Galaxy Express 999

I remember reading Beck when I was around 11 or 12 (when almost all I'd read/watched until then was Battle or Sports shonen) and I think I owe a lot of my current taste to it. I couldn't say it like that back then, but seeing the band members struggle for years and years, with all of life's ups and downs along the way felt very natural and human. I should re-read it, it's been a while.

I always like shounen, 95% of the anime I've watched since childhood are shounen. Maybe some with slice of life contents, but mainly shounen. So the answer coul be any anime from the '80 or '90.

I remember reading Beck
I haven't gotten to reading Beck at all, I've rewatched the anime hundred pf time but never read a single page of the manga. It's kinda weird for me to think about since the anime is in my top 10.
Not a manga in particular but perhaps Tezuka's work in general.
I need to get into Tezuka's work, Thousand and One Nights, Pluto, and Astro boy are the only ones I've read. Pluto only half counts since it's based on his work. Any recs?

Black Jack. Definitely Black Jack. It's my favorite of his works and one of my favorite mangas of all time.

As for a series that changed my taste, I think it would surprisingly be Bleach. Until like a few years ago, I didn't really care for a lot of shonen manga and thought they were all the same until I watched the Bleach anime and read the manga.

You really should, the anime stops very early in the manga's story.

Neon Genesis Evangelion
It's not the first anime I watched, but the way it handled it's characters made it believable.
And finishing the show allowed me to view othrr shows more criticaly.

The slower paced of the middle part of the show helped me appreciate other slower paced shows like Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolize, Bokurano and eventually led me to Kino no Tabi the 2003 version.
