The Labyrinth Zone in Sonic 1 for Japan has a cool effect when you're underwater, not sure why it was removed for the US (and maybe Europe too, idk)
What sound effect? i couldn't hear anything different between the Japanese and the American versions in terms of sound effects.

What about Wetrix on the N64? There’s water splashing about everywhere in that game.

Not really a major focus point in the game, but ICO and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance had some nice water effects as a graphics showcase when they were in the scene.

It's a visual effect. Look at Labyrinth Zone when he's underwater
I don't see anything besides those little bubbles that appear which are also on the US version.

I'll be honest, I didn't even know it had water levels. This is the first time I've seen one.
Water levels are fairly common in Metroid games. Super Metroid's water level is a sunken space pirate ship.

I mean, fullscreen it or something? That's a little wave/ripple effect. Maybe easier to see on the blocks you have to jump over, but it's pretty clear to see. Idk man

Now i see it it's kind of hard to see due to Youtube's compression. Man you really had to be more specific. They probably removed it from the US version because they thought people would get sick or something from the effect.

Somehow I totally missed that.

Perhaps to avoid dizziness?

Sega always had beautiful water graphics. The Dreamcast era was thier peak

Since many of my favorites, I at least can shout out to the water graphics on the Virtua Fighter 4 menu. It's very faint but it does add to the chill atmosphere

I forget that 3D games qualify as retro lol. The first game that came to mind was the reflection effect in Castlevania: Bloodlines

I do have a love for the early 2000s water effects, it felt like that was a huge cultural aesthetic, not just in gaming but in general. Super Mario Sunshine and Final Fantasy X in particular are two games that really exemplifies that era.

When someone says "SEGA", I think of a tropical sandy beach with palm trees and beautiful blue ocean. For some reason that's "the SEGA look" imho.

And my own post on-topic :
I generally think that three-dimentional retro games generally had pretty ugly water , something that more modern games have gotten on lock better. But there are some exceptions, like Just Cause 1 had pretty good looking water. Also a lot of tropical waters, those tend to look very nice to me, and be desirable environments in general.
