Plenty of you might be Familiar with the Unreal Eninge. A little less than that might know of the game that birthed the engine: Unreal. The dark fantasy FPS from 1998 made by Epic Games that was later used in 1999 for Unreal Tournament which was waht really put the Unreal Eninge on the map.

If if any of you have seen my site you probably will see that I talk about Unreal Tournament... like a lot, hehe. But the FPS game that came before it, Unreal, is equally cool and special to me. What I love about Unreal is the level designs, the ambient music, the combat, story, jump scares, pretty much nearly all of it. XD

But there's 1 particular part of Unreal (as well as Unreal Tournament) that makes it 20x better than it already was, that being the Unreal Editor. This was a tool that shipped with pretty much every game made with Unreal's Engine at the time, up until about Unreal Tournament 3 in 2007, that essentially allowed tou to edit the game it came with to your liking. It uses a brush based geometry builder kinda like Quake editors and such, and has various tools for modding pretty much EVERY aspect of the game. And to put the cherry on top, you could even use this modded content in game campaigns, or online with other players.

The online mode is also particularly one of Unreal and Unreal Tournament's strong suits. The cool thing is that servers for this game is completely decentralized, meaning that anyone can host their own Unreal/Unreal Tournament server, even if the master server completely shuts down. It's also good for the LAN party nights with your friends.

But now, what is Unreal really even about? Pretty much, you're held captive in a space ship, but then crash land on a planet full of ancient 4-armed creatures called Nali, who have had their temple overrun by the Skaarj and other aliens, so you fight the Skaarj to help the Nali. There's more to it but I don't wanna spoil the whole thing now lol. Unreal Tournament takes place after Unreal, where the Liandri mining corporation founded Tournament Deathmatch games in an attempt to control space violence, which has become their most profitable attraction that you were chosen to fight in.

Overall Unreal and Unreal Tournament are both EXTREMELY fun to play. If you're into story based games, definitely check out Unreal, or if you like Arena Shooters, then try out Unreal Tournament!

i need to play these again, i have vague memories of using the /noclip thing and flying around the map XD

Unreal is very cool but I've never made it that far in. It's on my bucket list though.

Never played Unreal, but I just love how moddable the engine is — you can make TCs in your lunch break with it, and I just don't understand how that isn't the case across the board.

Gaming as a whole would benefit immensely from it.

Unreal before Tournament? I should do it but I'm not expecting the game to be Quake nor Half-Life.

If I had to describe the campaign mode, it's kinda a lot like what out might get out of the Halo 1 campaign. You might see the resemblance in campaign style a bit more into the game.

Got it.

I remember reading that Zortch was partly inspired by Unreal as well (especially the female protagonist and alien world aspects).
