Koudelka PSX Game, actually the prequel to the Shadow hearts games. Not necessarily a horror game but has horror themes, still can be pretty creepy.

I mean most the japanese horror games for ps2 are relatively obscure/unknown to the general population

Rule of rose
Siren
Haunting ground
Clock Tower 4

Little more known ones like Fatal Frame series is a great pick.

A newer one I like is Tormented Souls. I played it on my PS5 but its a real throw back to earlier silent hill games. Which is mainly the appeal, definitely campy sometimes.

These are mainly the ones I can think of off the top of my head. For a variety of systems or platforms.

Definitely some more expensive than others lol.

Planet Laika is a horror game? Huh, I always had this one on my to-do list, but never got around to it - I always thought it was a wacky sci-fi RPG sort of deal. Neat, that actually makes me want to check it out even more!
Yes please play Planet Laika it is by far one of the best psychological horror games I have ever played and my second favorite horror game only behind Silent Hill 2.

Deep Fear on Sega Saturn is an interesting alternative to Resident Evil. It's been awhile since I played it but oxygen is your main resource. Rooms have different oxygen levels and need to be refilled. If you like bad voice acting you'll love it.

JUST REMEMBERED
KUON

PLAY KUON PLEASE
due to your sense of urgency i will install kuon right now

I'm a little bitch, I get scared really easily so for me any horror themed game scares me, so I can't recomend any "obscure" horror games since I don't like playing them... I guess I can recommend the Silent Night series? They aren't that well know, especially since they are made by FromSoft and they went on to make more succesfull games.

you're thinking of echo night, the same game the OP mentioned

No shame coming from me. I get scared from horror games too I just enjoy the thrill. I'll check it out.

On the PS2 Siren and the Fatal Frame series are a must where a good chunk of the horror is in the controls. If you want a more modern game with less intense confrontation in controls there's the Spirit Hunter series on steam, visual novels are sorely undersold on horror potential.

GAH, UNDERPAID NINE TO FIVE JOB!!!

Seriously tho, if you aren't in "Fake cute game where boom you are serial killer all along" or whatever, you could try How fish is made, is creepy, opressive and the fact it used PSX graphics made it a confusing experience i wish to forget, but i can't

Speaking of Echo Night, I really liked The First Voyage. It was originally part of the Adventure Player PSP compilation that only came out in Japan. It's a short point and click style game. Well it took me a long time to finish because I got stuck a few times. But it's a much lesser known entry into the series and worth checking out.

Obscure 1

A more action oriented resident evil like game set in a highschool. You can play it with another person locally and every character has different abilities for example one has the ability to find more objects and another has the ability to open some locked doors. It has a sequel but is much more action oriented than the first one, still a good game.

I recently played through this for the first time and was shocked at just how good it was! Was not prepared for the perma-death aspect and considering the size of the cast I was surprised at how well designed the game and story were to account for losing any character at any point. It's brevity made replays painless too so experimenting with strategies and trying to have a run where everyone lives felt like a fun challenge rather than an exercise in tedium.

Hmm, this is a tough one. I know plenty of horror games, horror is my bag, but knowing which ones are underrated/unknown is a bit harder.

Clocktower_3.jpg
Now this is a fucking game. Those who know will know what I mean. The Clock Tower series isn't exactly unknown, but I don't see people talking about it beyond the first game. It has the usual Clock Tower gameplay of running and hiding from mean things, but it's in 3rd person instead of point and click and it takes some surprising twists. It's not very scary, but it is an experience. If you do play it, go in as blind as possible.

Echo_Night_-_Beyond_Coverart.png
You mentioned Echo Night and I raise you an Echo Night: Beyond! It's the same kind of ghosty thing, but in a sci-fi setting. It's a good looking PS2 game and it has nice atmosphere.

That's about all I can think of that hasn't been mentioned yet, at least. I'll super duper second Eternal Darkness as well as (Forbidden) Siren 1&2 (Blood Curse too, if you don't mind something worse). Just be warned that the Siren series is a stealth horror series and is really brutal and esoteric at times.

Might as well toss a couple indie horror games onto the pile.

Darkwood is my favorite of the two, but you're in for a good time no matter which you choose.

I took some time to think about this. I can think of a decent chunk of games that are good enough and underrated, but one stood out above all the others...

Stella_Glow_cover.jpg
Stella Glow! This one was a super nice surprise. It was suggested to me because it's a Tactical RPG, which is my favorite genre. It's not a perfect game, nothing is, but when I started playing it I didn't put it down until I finished it. It's pretty high on my list of Tactical RPGs and I've been wanting to replay it since I beat it.
