Movies Underrated Actors

Oh absolutely, scum of the earth. Ever hear about that time he tried to get Herzog killed?

That said, his daughter Nastassja absolutely deserves a mention - Paris, Texas for example is fantastic!

I'll watch that next! All I really know about Kalinsky is that he was in a few spaghetti westerns, starred in The Wrath of God, that tolberone story when they had the helicopter crash and obviously how abusive he was to his family. I had no idea he tried to kill Herzog but it doesn't surprise me.. The stories about them together read like the logs of an SS13 game!

I absolutely recommend it!
Since you mention liking the Dollar trilogy I'm assuming you have no issue with slower films, but just so you're aware - it's a slow burn kind of thing. I definitely enjoyed it a lot!

And real-life SS13 is the perfect way to put it. ?

I may need a definition of underrated here, does it include a multi million dollar net worth and 5 huge budget movies a year?
Haha, well-played. To be honest, I thought people disliked Ben Stiller, and didn’t care for Jason Statham. So they popped into my head but you raise a fair point.
On a personal, I tend to not worry too much about answers since it’s quite common for users to come in and not be sure what to submit, but it is fair I should’ve explained stuff a bit more.
Ben never won an Oscar, and he hasn’t had a presence in movies in years (something which I might be wrong), not to mention I’ve seen him mocked in some movie circles I’ve been in, largely due to being in a lot of mediocre romcoms (that I happen to like).
I probably should’ve written that explanation in advance. Sorry!

I suppose there’s also a large discrepancy between “underrated artistically” and “underrated by the industry they work for”. Should’ve clarified that as well.

Also maybe actually underrated: Zoe Bell

I have always related the word underrated with not getting deserved recognition for being as good as they are. For example: Denzel Washington is NOT an underrated actor. He has received plenty of accolades for the fine work he does. Most people are familiar with him and his movies etc. On the other hand Mary Elisabeth Winstead is phenomenal at her craft but does not have nearly the popularity her ability should earn for her.

That’s completely fair. To be honest, a part of me doesn’t want the thread to be more arguing about the definition as that could risk derailing it but I understand I’m partially at fault here and am willing to take accountability by removing the Ben Stiller and my other post to remove future confusion. I understand I have some responsibility I must meet as the thread creator and shouldn’t be egotistical about it. Sorry if that’s the attitude I gave.

Now… on the other hand, it would be unironically hilarious if, outside of my control, the thread starts discussing the definition anyways. I dunno. My little gremilin brain doesn’t mind the occasional chaos. But don’t worry, I’m more clear-headed and going to remove the images as an apology. (Plus I’m not in a good mood because of an irl thing I’ll explain in a status post)

Sorry again and thank you for dropping a word in my thread, middler. Your presence is appreciated.

Kiefer Sutherland is underrated IMO. He has many great roles in film, television and even video games.

Even though he is arguably the sole true movie star that remains, the one A-List actor who has never pivoted to TV in any format, Tom Cruise remains underrated as an acting talent: his persona carries his movies and sustains his endless presence in the public imagination and discourse, but his acting prowess is always treated as incidental, as if he isn't extremely good at any role he touches. He's simply magnetic beyond all belief, regardless of how much someone knows about his personal life. Underrated to the public because of the sheer weight of his star power, but a complete industry legend based on the tales of anyone who works with him.

A lot of this is chosen/self-inflicted on his part, as he has moved to largely impersonal action roles because of the one-two punch of the Oprah couch interview in 2005 & the increased speculation about what he knows/doesn't know about Scientology. His roles since have been more or less 'Tom Cruise: As You May Know Him' rather than the dramas and personal roles that made his bread and butter in the '90s and pre-Oprah '00s

His plan for the rest of the 2020s is to become a dramatic actor once more, but I'm genuinely curious whether his plan to be more intimate with the public again will work.

Oh, that's honestly a pretty easy one,
Yes, I know he's a highly regarded voice actor, but the role he plays in films hes in is underrated, it felt like I was watching him improv his lines in a million ways to die in the west

William Fichtner he played a blinder in armageddon and
his role in Drive Angry is pure gold. Hes that guy that pops
up in movies who you know is there but just not quite sure
who he is.

Definitely John Hannah.
He's a great actor, quite versatile, as he showed in the roles he is best known for, namely Jonathan Carnahan in The Mummy trilogy (since they want to shoot the fourth part with Fraser and Weisz, I hope he'll be back too), Matthew in Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Batiatus in Spartacus: Blood and Sand and Gods of the Arena.

And when I mention Spartacus, his TV wife Lucretia, Lucy Lawless, is associated almost exclusively with the series: D'Anna Biers in Battlestar Galactica and Xena in Xena: Warrior Princess, Diane Lewis-Swanson in Parks and Recreation, Countess Palatine Ingrid von Marburg in Salem and Ruby in Ash vs Evil Dead. However, she has been completely overlooked in films, where the only role anyone can associate her with is probably her cameo in EuroTrip.

Rupert Grint. He got stuck with the label of Ron from Harry Potter, but he showed in Knock at the Cabin that he can play roles very different from Ron, although he didn't play much there. He showed us a lot of the comedic potential he already displayed in Potter in the series Snatch and Sick Note, as well as in a much more serious role in the series Servant. But despite this, I get the impression that because of the Ron label, he is not being cast in major productions.

Mads Mikkelsen is one of those actors who carries a rare presence. He walks into a scene and you feel the weight. Most people remember him for his villains, like the cold stare in 007 Casino Royale, the dangerous mystic in Doctor Strange, or the most elegant and terrifying Hannibal ever put on TV. But reducing him to a "villain actor" is a big mistake.

His range is much wider than people realize. In Druk, he delivers a worn-out, deeply human teacher. In The Hunt, maybe his strongest performance, he is not a monster at all but a victim, vulnerable, quiet, and falling apart. And if anyone still doubts his versatility, his role in Death Stranding seals the deal. There he brings depth, menace, and emotion to a character in a medium where many actors barely scratch the surface.

That is where it becomes clear. This man does not need makeup, posturing, or evil to shine. He only needs talent, and he has plenty.

That is why, when Robert Downey Jr. was announced as Doctor Doom, it felt wrong. Not out of dislike, because RDJ is great at what he does, but because Mikkelsen would have been the perfect choice. These days, hype matters more than precise casting. Marvel has not made a truly strong film in a long time, so they stick to the safe bet.

In the end, Mads always stands somewhere between recognition and being overlooked, shining more than people allow him to. And to me, that is the exact definition of an underrated actor.
