Having a fully polygonal FPS in this generation seemed like a selling point.Well, it standardized having a crap ton of weapons for you to use — something a LOT of games tried to copy afterwards, but that seems to have died down (if not vanished entirely) since.
I always thought it was a bit overrated, but it is also true that it was beautifully optimized and set a very clear benchmark standard for how to program for the N64.
Thank you for explaining the reason for this game's existence (I always thought it was a spin-off made because the company had leftover money).Turok Rage Wars is literally the closest thing the N64 has to an arena shooter á la Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament.
I'm looking for that supposed fun from the 3rd game onwards and besides not finding it, I see companies insisting on reviving a franchise that lost its appeal decades ago (something that would only make sense if it had generated significant contributions to the industry).Honestly, this is a pretty strange perspective to have on gaming as a whole. Basing a game's value on whether it contributed to the industry or not seems like a very cold way to approach things.
Not every game has to revolutionize things. Something existing solely to be fun is far more important than everything taking the industry forward.
I loved the first one. Didn't really care for any of the sequels. What contributions has this franchise made to the gaming industry? I don't know any.View attachment 198348
You mean turok rage wars, right? Because Turok 3 has a single player campaignTurok 1 and 2 are really good games, but i think they fell off after with 3. I mean i came into the series as a single player shooter for the n64 and yet the 3rd game became multiplayer focus. I rather it was a single player shooter like Evolution cause that is what the series should be, cool settings, dinosaurs, and awesome weaponry.
It had, in essence, the first twin-stick control setup for a console FPS. Held back, of course, by the fact that the N64 only had one joystickWhat contributions has this franchise made to the gaming industry? I don't know any.

That's the boomer shooter DNA.Played the remaster of the first game. I enjoyed it when I got to shoot things but I often just got lost in the levels, not knowing where to go and eventually dropped it because of that.
That's true. Every time Turok is resurrected in the comics these days, it goes unnoticed by everyone. As was already said, it was one of the earliest hits for the N64 and helped establish a certain standard for the modern 3D FPS. It wasn't alone in this, obviously, since GoldenEye would come out that same year, but while it's easy sometimes to poopoo on the N64 because of the lack of third party support and all the damn kart racers, it was probably the better console for the FPS genre at the time compared to the Sony Playstation & the Sega Saturn.
As far as the Turok games go, Seeds of Evil was the better game imho and was really mind blowing. While Turok 1 was very impressive, it's a little rough around the edges, and feels like it's trying hard to follow the example of Quake. Seeds of Evil & Rage Wars managed to develop a bit more of their own identity.
But if there is one understated achievement of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, it's that it helped revive interest in the Turok comic book series. Turok was a relatively obscure character that had been around since the 1950's. The Acclaim/Iguana game came in the wake of the revived graphic novel series by Valiant, but I think if anyone in the present day knows the name of Turok, it is because of the video games. So thanks in no small part to the original N64 game, Turok has continued as a media franchise through various revivals for over 70 years now.
I didn't know about Retro Studios (Metroid Prime 4 really didn't take off, huh?)Nah, the first three games in the Turok series are great! They may not be groundbreaking FPS games like the Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, Halo, and the Half-Life series, but the first three games in the series are very competent and well-designed FPS games. (I also forgot to mention GoldenEye and the first Perfect Dark, which are also very influential games in the FPS genre)
Unfortunately, the series fell off after Turok 3. Turok Rage Wars is a fun multiplayer game, but Turok Evolution and the rest? Yuck. It stinks!
The team that worked on the first two Turok games would later go on to found Retro Studios and develop the acclaimed Metroid Prime series, and Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes are some of the best games of all time, in my opinion (Metroid Prime 3 is also good, though a bit weaker when compared to the first two games, and Metroid Prime 4..... well, it exists).
FPS and platformer games often seem too different to be combined into one, but Far Cry 3 proved me wrong. The only thing I didn't like about Turok 1 is how odd the jump physics is (even with the remaster) and because of that weird save and live system.
You never played Metroid Prime? You really should! The first two games are masterpieces, in my opinion.I didn't know about Retro Studios (Metroid Prime 4 really didn't take off, huh?)

It seems they tried to update both gameplay and narrative with a talking companion... and it didn't sit well with the fandom. You never played Metroid Prime? You really should! The first two games are masterpieces, in my opinion.
I never played Metroid Prime 4 because I'm broke and I don't have a Nintendo Switch (I've never had one) or a Nintendo Switch 2, but I've watched reviews and video essays about the game, and it's....... something........ you know?
Isn't Turok Origins an attempt to revive Rage Wars? They should remake Rage Wars.
I could manage with rocket jumping like in Quake and Half-Life/Source games platforming but it's hard without a clear hitbox.FPS and platformer games often seem too different to be combined into one, but Far Cry 3 proved me wrong.
