The Nintendo Switch 2 is Announced (+ New Direct on April 2nd)

IMG_4249.jpeg

In an announcement no one saw coming today, Nintendo have shadow-dropped their reveal of newest addition to the Switch family, none other than the successor itself! With a lot of info teased within the trailer itself. It’s been heavily speculated that the trailer would be upon us, but no one anticipated a shadow drop. Classic Nintendo!

Slick New Design

The Switch 2 seems to be following upon the footsteps of the Legion Go with its joycon design, omitting the “slide” that the previous switch had and instead opting for a more clicky, ergonomic way to attach and detach your joycons. Hopefully more info is revealed on how this works.

New Joycon Design

Even the joycons received a complete makeover, ditching the iconic red and blue and instead having a slick black color scheme that still retains a red and blue accent that we all know and love. While it’s difficult to tell, the buttons also seems to have been redesigned slightly. It seems like Nintendo wants a larger emphasis on ergonomics which would be definitely appreciated.

New Kickstand

Following up on the OLED model, Nintendo have learned their lesson with this one. Many users, including the author of this very piece, had trouble with the original Switch’s stand as it broke very easily which proved dangerous as that left the SD card port exposed which was strangely amateurish of Nintendo to not realize a decade ago. Thankfully, lessons have definitely been learned and we no longer need to worry about that.

New Mario Kart?

IMG_4248.jpeg

You thought Nintendo was content with shadow-dropping a system reveal? Think again! As it seems they want to keep the ball rolling by teasing a new Mario Kart, which is arguably the smartest choice for a first game reveal in a console known for being so local coop friendly.

Not much is shown here, just a few seconds of gameplay to get players hooked, but more is definitely on the way.

Backwards Compatibility confirmed

Seems like Nintendo wants to further relief any tension regarding this, as despite seeming like a no-brainer, a few were still skeptical so it’s nice to see Nintendo answering those worries anyways.

New Direct Announced 4.2.2025

It seems like Nintendo wants to fire on all cylinders possible, not only do we have a new console accompanied by a game tease, but there’s a new direct in April 2nd this year that will likely go into more detail so keep your eyes peeled!

I KNEW ITTTT I FREAKING KNEWWWWWW IT , I WISH THEY SHOWED MORE. but oh well at least we have a direct

I bet "Super Switch" made the final rounds but ultimately lost to the safer Switch 2. Only reason I can think why is because perhaps Nintendo thought "Super Switch" implied more of a "Pro" model to the original, instead of a full fledged new console, where as you can't easily make that misinterpretation when you put a 2 in the name.

Reminds me a lot of Pokemon B&W 2, like yeah it is a sequel, but you could at least make a better sounding name lol.

Meanwhile, the first Switch announced that will be have an version of Genshin Impact.

I think that this will be a bad choice done by Nintendo for MiYoHo(creators of Genshin and Honkai series), as possibly the company will get more focus on 2 instead of the original.

NO DPAD AGAIN??

And all those expensive joycons I own wont work on it?

Will switch 1 games run better at least?
The regular left Joy-Con not having a d-pad is a necessary evil. Since you can use both Joy-Cons as separate controllers it would feel weird to have a d-pad as the face buttons when using the left Joy-Con as its own controller. Thankfully they knew enough to make the Lite versions have a d-pad. Not having a d-pad on mine when in handheld surprisingly doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would when I originally bought it. It still functions fine as the directional keys. The only Joy-Cons I have are the ones that came with it stock. I have 3 different aftermarket Switch pro controllers that I mainly use with it. The one I use the most is my Pokemon Scarlet/Violet themed Funlab Firefly Pro controller:

It's got 2 different kinds of d-pads you can swap out and 7 different light colors to pick from. If you turn the light off it hides the design completely. They have other designs too and JoyCon versions that actually do have d-pads on them. Right now it's on sale for $49.99

Also the Doom ports aren't cloud only and Panic Button did an amazing job porting them to Switch. While they might be the worst looking versions of the games they still run super smooth and are among the best looking Switch titles. Panic Button also ported Warframe and the newer Wolfenstien games to Switch and they done great on those too

Does the original Switch support any 3rd party bluetooth controller (such as my Vader 3 Pro?) or do you have to purchase a Nintendo approved Pro controller? I'm assuming whatever the Switch accepts then the Switch 2 would as well?

I kinda wish I had an answer. My tests were often fruitless.

I dunno if they have to be "approved" or not but they have to specifically have support for the Switch's input method. One of my other ones is a GameSir T4 Pro and the face buttons are Xbox layout, but it has support for ios, apple arcade, android, pc, and switch. You can use button combos when powering it on to change what input method it's using. The Firefly one is the same as well. I use it on my laptop a lot too. If it's a bluetooth controller that only has support for x-input (or d-input) for using on pc then it won't work on Switch. You can also connect to windows in Pro Controller mode too but you need drivers that can recognize it. If you set that up right you can actually use the gyro motion controls on your computer

Let me help you then: Don't buy it, wait it out. If you have these doubts about the Switch 2, then it's better to wait and see what happens over the year. Hell I'm willing to wait 5 years to get a version that fits me, until then I'll wait it out.
Yeah, I waited until December 2017 to buy the OG Switch and even then there was such a lack of games, and hopefully that isn't the case here. I usually wait at least 6 months before a new console for bugs, recalls, features to be implemented, etc. Plus, the holiday for the launch year usually has the better games.

When I saw the announcement...I dont know...they couldn't even be arsed to try and make a new name? I think is the first time i see thrm go this bland.
Playstation has been naming the series just with another number. Playstation 4 and 5 are technically the same. Just upscaling and overpriced(i might be wrong on the upscaled probably). Yet each Nintendo console had something unique about them, at least on their console design and GUI once you booted up their consoles. There was something creative behind on each of them. Now...I dont know..maybe im cherrypicking, honestly no idea
