The Nintendo Switch 2 is Announced (+ New Direct on April 2nd)

In an announcement no one saw coming today, Nintendo have shadow-dropped their reveal of newest addition to the Switch family, none other than the successor itself! With a lot of info teased within the trailer itself. It’s been heavily speculated that the trailer would be upon us, but no one anticipated a shadow drop. Classic Nintendo!

Slick New Design

The Switch 2 seems to be following upon the footsteps of the Legion Go with its joycon design, omitting the “slide” that the previous switch had and instead opting for a more clicky, ergonomic way to attach and detach your joycons. Hopefully more info is revealed on how this works.

New Joycon Design

Even the joycons received a complete makeover, ditching the iconic red and blue and instead having a slick black color scheme that still retains a red and blue accent that we all know and love. While it’s difficult to tell, the buttons also seems to have been redesigned slightly. It seems like Nintendo wants a larger emphasis on ergonomics which would be definitely appreciated.

New Kickstand

Following up on the OLED model, Nintendo have learned their lesson with this one. Many users, including the author of this very piece, had trouble with the original Switch’s stand as it broke very easily which proved dangerous as that left the SD card port exposed which was strangely amateurish of Nintendo to not realize a decade ago. Thankfully, lessons have definitely been learned and we no longer need to worry about that.

New Mario Kart?

You thought Nintendo was content with shadow-dropping a system reveal? Think again! As it seems they want to keep the ball rolling by teasing a new Mario Kart, which is arguably the smartest choice for a first game reveal in a console known for being so local coop friendly.

Not much is shown here, just a few seconds of gameplay to get players hooked, but more is definitely on the way.

Backwards Compatibility confirmed

Seems like Nintendo wants to further relief any tension regarding this, as despite seeming like a no-brainer, a few were still skeptical so it’s nice to see Nintendo answering those worries anyways.

New Direct Announced 4.2.2025

IMG_4247.jpeg

It seems like Nintendo wants to fire on all cylinders possible, not only do we have a new console accompanied by a game tease, but there’s a new direct in April 2nd this year that will likely go into more detail so keep your eyes peeled!

Are you excited for the new hardware? Turn the hype switch on in the comment section below.

Ive never bought a console on day 1 and I dont get people who, especially now that new consoles have no games
Me neither. Not a great investment overall especially with prices being the way they are now.

Let me help you then: Don't buy it, wait it out. If you have these doubts about the Switch 2, then it's better to wait and see what happens over the year. Hell I'm willing to wait 5 years to get a version that fits me, until then I'll wait it out.

I usually wait a year or so to get new consoles. Usually there's not enough games and they do price drops, or fix any glaring problems that emerge on launch.

I mean, all consoles have no games day one. Have you seen the original line-up of the 3DS? The only notable game was Nintendogs...
Hey hey

Ps2 was more than decent, Dreamcast was amazing, GBA and Game Boy were pretty good, super famicom launched with mario world, n64 launched with mario64

Sorry to go back to this, but it just hit me. What about the games on switch that were cloud only? What about Doom? Mortal Kombat 11? All these games with terrible Switch ports, will they be better now?
Doom was cloud only? I only know about KH.
Tbf making kingdom hearts cloud only was a good idea to me, I’d keep as many people from KH as possible if it were up to me.

More like will all the cloud crap get an actual port?

Im still not over how one of the earliest switch games was a port of street fighter 2 just to rub in the lack of dpad

Very nice write-up!

Honestly, it's about what everyone was expecting, backwards compatibility would have been a dealbreaker if it were missing.

Well, safe to say the cloud titles will only benefit from a more robust WiFi and (supposedly) ethernet on the dock coming standard. Small comfort, that.

So many Switch games have an adaptive resolution/variable frame rate that a lot of games will look/feel a bit better, but it probably won't be substantial. The interesting thing will be this Nvidia powered "DLSS but make it Nintendo" they'll be using; I imagine that gives developers, Nintendo especially, the ability to get a more impressive image while docked. There were lots of reports about 4K Breath of the Wild getting shown off earlier this year, that's probably how they were getting that result. It won't measure up to real 4K, but at the very least, a lot of first-party games can probably expect to see a sharp look on 1080p screens.

Thanks for reading! Yeah they covered all their basis I would say.

I hope they'll at least have a framerate mode or something, Im tired of the switch version always being at 30
Dont even bother and make an original game if its all gonna be 30

Interesting stuff... All of this reminds me when I played 4U on a OG 3DS and a New 3DS, the difference was night and day, and when you went to shut off the game, on the OG 3DS it did a soft reboot after closing the game, never understood why it did that.

The ds has to shut off if you even enter settings mode, it will explode if it doesnt

Make Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity run at 60 FPS and that's my killer app, I'm day one. (Cash permitting)
