interesting news
i have an AES, could be the opportunity to have some more real games in the collection.
surely not on day one :)

It would be cool if some new titles will come out too, or some og NeoGeo aftermarket developers will join too

i.e. Gunlord finally at an acceptable prize

One thing which is an upgrade, aside from the wireless controllers, is the HDMI out. Especially when it came to the sound which was mono. Want stereo sound? Plug in an adapter in the ear phone jack.

My question is what resolution is it gonna be at with the HDMI or are we gonna have options and new system menu of some kind?

Carts from new system will be also compatible with the old system. So wonder after these 10 what other games gonna be available? Be nice if through some miracle options added in like arranged soundtack or other stuff like bonus features like gallery mode.

The initial titles they're offering is not very appealing.

A KOF title is essential but their choice of 2k2 isn't enough. I know a lot of people like KOF 2002 but IMO, the titles released after SNK's first bankruptcy suffer a significant quality drop compared to the games released before it especially the ones released just before SNK's fall. (What were they thinking when they implemented Ryo's input for his Max Ryuuko Ranbu in 2k2?) They should have included KOF 98 with 2k2, the former of which I think is one of the key pillars at the pinnacle of SNK's golden age.

Emulation is fine with me as long as there's no noticeable frame skips. I'll probably be more amenable to getting those titles on arcade archives for PS4/PS5 if I want something more official.

I wonder if they can pull off releasing a cart of SVC Chaos.

The initial titles they're offering is not very appealing.
I have to disagree with this. They went for a range of titles across multiple genres, so there's something here for everyone. Not a fan of fighters? There's shmups. Not a fan of shmups? Play some golf. Not a fan of golf? Check out some platformers.

I'm not enough of a fighting game person to tell you which KoF is the best, but I know Garou is super popular so I'm sure fighting game fans will be happy either way. Besides, it sounds like there's more games on the way after launch, so there's plenty of time to see re-releases for KoF 94, 98, etc.

It would be cool if some new titles will come out too
They just might!! SNK has a job listing up for a pixel artist to work at their Osaka office, so it sounds like they might be making new AES games. Or at least I hope they are.

I'm interested, but the price of the games is scandalous. $80 for old games?! Even GTA 6 will be either cheaper or same price. SNK Playmore might be high.

Checked out Over The Top. Charging $80 for it is nuts.

iu
Personally, I explained it in this long message, but yes, SNK used the Playmore designation in the early 2000s; however, all of that was dropped in 2016.

The 'O' in Playmore was actually a pachi-slot token and represented SNK's temporary interest in that specific market; however, Japan later changed its legislation to make it less profitable and with the Chinese acquisition at the time, it ultimately made no sense to keep it and neither is the current Saudi ownership interested in going down that path again.

Anyway, even the hardcore fans of the time didn't really care about 'Over Top' and that's the reason why it later became extremely rare and expensive to get.

It has been 5 days since this reincarnation was announced and I have kept myself very well-informed; therefore, hoping that they are completely reliable and will actually be carried out, here are the answers to your questions.

It will no longer be necessary to use the headphone trick to get stereo output, because this time it will be native;

The declared HDMI output will reach a maximum of low-latency 1080 pixel and even better than MVS, it has been stated that it will also be possible to apply other modifications (such as to the image display).

It would be great to then use the arranged soundtracks on cartridges and the last time I heard of something like, which was on the reprints published on DVD.

Before heading to work, I dropped by the SNK Akiba Store on the 4F of Animate Akihabara ANNEX.

Snapped a pic of the NEOGEO AES+! Σpω・´)

The glare from the lighting is... 💦

The controller connection terminals are there, alright... I checked the underside as well; it's hard to tell from the photo, but towards the back of the underside there was a hatch that looks like it could provide access to the internals.

It's a shame I couldn't check the crucial rear side😓

The memory card has a protective film attached to it.

I hope a working demo is put on display soon!

🇺🇸
Well, this provides good confirmation for the Neo Geo AES+: we find the original DIN output, which I assume is properly wired for RGB, in addition to the HDMI right next to it, and of course the now-standard USB-C.

Regarding the grain of the plastics, you can clearly see that they replicated the look of the original plastic, and not something completely smooth and ugly.

Concerning the boxes visible in the showcase exhibition images, they are clearly not final, given that the back covers aren't even printed. So all of this is looking quite promising, and we should also expect a few modifications here and there before final production.

Thanks to @Life_is_a_VG, Mr. Gemu Oni live from Japan, for this very detailed video, which you can find in the comments of my post.

🇫🇷

🇺🇸
[intro music]

So here we are.

The SNK Neo Geo AES Plus.

You can't see a lot of details, huh?

In my opinion, the boxes are empty.

Are the prints final? Uh, I think so, yeah. You can tell it's not offset printing, huh. I don't know if we're gonna manage to see anything, huh. Unfortunately. You can see that the stick, ah, it's raised, that's why. Yeah, it's not final.

OK. So what we can notice is that the console is still the original size. I was wondering if, uh, they were gonna make a slightly downsized console because there's actually nothing to put inside it, I mean, in 2026, you know. And, uh, well it looks like they didn't, actually. You see, they made it real size. You can see it's brand new, the plastic looks high quality.

Uh, the gold lettering of the Neo Geo looks very, very much like, and is very, very close to what we had back in the day on, uh, the lady in black.

And you can really see that the inserts aren't offset, huh. It's clear as day, not offset, but it's still very, very clean.

And you can see they're fakes, look. On the back, actually, there's no printing. So actually, what we're looking at is just "falsh". It's just fake stuff, meaning that, in truth, it's, uh, just inserts, not even the final inserts and definitely with a console that isn't, well, the real console because there shouldn't be a PCB inside.

So, uh, this prevents pirates, pirates, from, uh, opening the machine and starting to look at what's inside already even though it's not even out yet. So all of this is just a setup.

The only interesting piece of information we have is that we see, uh, the print quality and, uh, the shape of the machine [rock music].

There we can see that the box was tossed in upside down. So that shows how much this was done in a rush and that it's actually just, uh, well an exhibition.

Because, look here, you can clearly see the box is right-side up. We do have the SNK stripe on the side, uh, of the, of the big box. And so that proves even more that this is just a marketing operation. Yeah. That's it.

Well listen, let's take a little walk around to finish up in this SNK store with this magnificent wall celebrating the history of SNK.

Anyway, we'll keep each other informed, we'll keep you updated on future events and fresh news about the Neo Geo AES Plus as soon as we know a bit more. Because, well for now, uh, this SNK Pop Up Store smells like a scam from a mile away since, oh, a magnificent little Neo Geo, Neo 19, SC 19. You don't see these on every street corner anymore. And this is the little bonus of this video. Treat yourselves with this little SC 19.

Anyway, thanks guys. And as we say where I'm from: Sarabayo [music ends].

What is the official statement from Plaion regarding the NEOGEO+?

Press release

SNK and PLAION Announce the Return of the King:
The NEOGEO AES+ Comes Home, Ready For Holiday 2026

The Legendary Console Classic Is Back with No Emulation, No Compromise, No Comparison. Be Part of the Real Arcade Revolution with Pre-Orders Starting Today

(16:00 BST) 16th April 2026: PLAION REPLAI, a leading global publisher and developer of retro video games and consoles announced today the return of a legend, with the NEOGEO AES+ (Advanced Entertainment System) returning to homes ready for Holiday 2026.

With pre-orders opening today, and the launch date set as 12th November 2026, the NEOGEO AES+ has been produced in collaboration with SNK, the producers of the original hardware.

Celebrating 35 years of arcade perfection, the iconic NEOGEO AES stood as a beacon of excellence, with the 24-bit luxury super console a world apart from rival 16-bit systems, designed for gaming connoisseurs who refused to accept compromised homeports of arcade classics.

With each title representing a 1:1 direct replica of the original arcade board used on SNK’s MVS (Multi-Video System), NEOGEO cartridges would differ significantly from traditional console games typically shipped on a 4Mb or 8Mb cartridge, with the largest NEOGEO game weighing in at an incredible 708Mb, and games which exceeded 100Mb in size giving birth to the infamous ‘100Mega Shock’ moniker.

Often imitated but never equalled, the NEOGEO AES represented the definition of high-end, desirable gaming tech, lusted after by all those who played, but proving beyond the reach of casual gamers thanks to the premium cost of hardware and game cartridges, many of which still command huge prices today on the collector market.

Honouring the prestigious hardware in the manner it deserves, the return of the NEOGEO AES represents a milestone in retro hardware re-releases. In keeping with the original ethos of ‘Zero Compromise’ gaming, the NEOGEO AES+ is no mere micro console, offering unrivalled authenticity designed to appeal to the true gamer and discerning collector. Forgoing the traditional route of emulation, the NEOGEO AES+ utilises ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits), presenting a wholly authentic experience for both hardware and software, looking, feeling and playing just as you remember, truly ‘arcade perfect’ in each and every way. The new hardware is so authentic in fact, that the NEOGEO AES+ offers full compatibility with original NEOGEO AES cartridges, ideal for those with a pre-existing collection of games, wishing to play on modern displays.

Speaking of modern displays, the NEOGEO AES+ comes armed with discrete quality of life upgrades designed to appeal to a modern gaming audience without altering or compromising the console features so inherent to the original appeal. In addition to the regular AV out, built for CRT enthusiasts to enjoy, the new hardware comes complete with low-latency HDMI™ output finally allowing the games to be enjoyed in crystal clear HD, with resolutions of up to 1080p. On-screen BIOS and DIP Switches located on the bottom of the console allow for instant switching of territory language selection, overclocking the hardware or choosing different display modes, and the console now offers low power usage as well as permanently saving gamers’ High Score saves for each game.

Such momentous hardware deserves more than a mere console release however, and PLAION REPLAI plan to support the console launch with a full ecosystem of games and accessories, offering fans old and new alike a chance to build their ultimate collection of arcade classics with all of the authenticity, but none of the prohibitive costs associated with the system and software, finally priced at a level that puts perfection within the reach of the masses.

Launching alongside the console, is a collection of ten classic NEOGEO games, with more releases expected to follow. On day one, gamers can purchase the following software:

Metal Slug
The King of Fighters 2002
Garou: Mark of the Wolves
Big Tournament Golf
Shock Troopers
Samurai Shodown V Special
Pulstar
Twinkle Star Sprites
Magician Lord
Over Top

As part of the 35th anniversary celebration, gamers will also be able to purchase the exclusive Anniversary Edition bundle, stunningly presented in an ice white design which has been applied to the authentic wireless Arcade Stick, Metal Slug game cartridge and Memory Card, which come included as part of the bundle. The white Metal Slug game cartridge will not be available to buy anywhere else.

All versions of the NEOGEO AES+ come complete with power supply, HDMI cable and Arcade Stick, and in addition, the following NEOGEO AES+ accessories will also be available to purchase upon launch:

NEOGEO AES+ Arcade Stick: A 1:1 replica of the original classic controller, now updated to offer both wired and wireless capability
NEOGEO AES+ Memory Card: A 1:1 replica of the original, performing in the exact same fashion as the original, but now updated to no longer require a cell battery
NEOGEO AES+ Gamepad: A 1:1 replica of the original

Please see the Announce Trailer here

Both the Standard Edition and the 35th Anniversary Edition NEOGEO AES+ hardware will release on 12th November 2026, and are available to pre-order today at https://www.plaionreplai.com/neogeo for an SRP of Standard: £179.99 (€199.99) / Anniversary: £269.99 (€299.99).

SNK and PLAION Announce the Return of the King:
The NEOGEO AES+ Comes Home, Ready For Holiday 2026

Does this statement contain any errors?

Yes, it contains 2.

1) Was the NEOGEO truly a 24-bit system?

No
, even though almost 40 years ago in the US the NEOGEO was marketed as a 24-bit home system, in reality, it was just another 16-bit machine.

It simply packed two CPUs: the primary one was a 16-bit Motorola 68000, while its 'colleague' was an 8-bit Zilog Z80 for the audio. However, this doesn't magically turn the system into a 24-bit one, because otherwise, the Sega Mega Drive should be considered one too, seeing as it rocks the exact same two CPUs as the NEOGEO.

So what actually made SNK's machine superior to the competition?

The clock speed of SNK's Motorola 68000 hit 12 MHz, the Mega Drive dropped to 7.6 and the Super Famicom crawled at a mere 3.58 MHz;

In cartridge-based systems, the game acts almost like VRAM, meaning zero bottlenecks from a CD-ROM drive, but the NEO won hands down due to its massive total storage capacity;

The Neo had its own custom graphics chipset (the LSPC chip), which allowed it to push 380 sprites simultaneously on screen; the SNES tapped out at 128 and the Mega Drive at just 80. Not to mention its hardware zooming capabilities;

The Mega Drive could display 64 colors simultaneously on screen at any given moment; the SNES hit 256, but the NG crushed it with 4 096 colors;

The Mega Drive only had 1 audio channel dedicated to voices and DAC sampling (Yamaha YM2612), the Super Famicom had 8 for sampling but was limited by a measly 64 KB of RAM (Sony SPC700), whereas the Neo boasted 15 total channels with 7 dedicated strictly to audio sampling and it made zero compromises (Yamaha YM2610), because it streamed all the audio straight from the giant cartridge itself.

2) Were the cartridges of the past measured in Mega Bytes (MB)? Or in Mega Bits (Mb)?

In Megabits and each Mb was just 1/8th of a Megabyte (MB), but that still doesn't take anything away from how mind-blowing the system was for its time, because while 'Super Mario World' weighed in at 8 Mb, the NG (which launched in the exact same year) went on to crank out 'KOF 2003' at a whopping 716 Mb, which is still nearly 90 MB.

Is anyone else absolutely fouling themselves with joy over this?
I do wonder about the carts though. 90 seems cheap and a little suspicious, like they may be a a flash cart with one game on inside.

I went the route of consolizing an MVS arcade board. It was pretty trivial to do. As for the games, I started with cheap E-Bay finds, then a couple of Aliexpress bootlegs, then the multi-carts, and I finally bit the bullet and bought the BackBit Platinum flash cart and couldn't be happier. It is really cool for the AES+ to be coming out but I feel it is only going to be helpful for people that already have one and are afraid of it dying. It would make a great 2nd unit if you already have the original AES and a large collection of games but if you are thinking about starting to go down the Neo Geo path, there are other ways like the Mister that give you the similar outcome without the huge $$$ cost. I enjoy my MVS and flash cart but if I didn't already have the MVS motherboard to go down this path I would just stick with the Mister and save my money for other things. Not to dissuade people as the Neo Geo is pretty awesome but the cost of AES carts still creates a very high barrier of entry. If they continue to produce the carts for a much cheaper price it does make it more interesting but if the 10 game run is the only thing they end up with it will be a disappointment.

I don't care for SHUMPs and for fighter I'm cool with MK and SF2. So there is no
reason on this God's green earth why I would care about this. I guess if it ends up being a good piece of hardware it's god for game preservation? At least you wont need to buy PCBs.

I'm not a big Neo Geo fan, but there are a few games I would love to play on real hardware so either through flashcarts or real carts it's fine. I will buy the console with amazon gift cards if by the time I save up enough it's still sold on there.
A few games I'd love to play on it are

- Blazing Star
- Sengoku 1, 2 i 3
- Mutation Nation
- Aero Fighters 2 i 3(Sonic Wings 3
- Alpha Mission 2
- Shock Troopers I i II
- Top Hunter
- Metal Slug series - I'm not a big fan but it would be nice experiencing it on real hardware why not
- Last Blade 2
- Waku Waku 7
- Spin Master

A few other games I'm probably forgetting now

I'm not a big fighting game fan so I can leave or take those games

I've been tempted to consolise an MV1-C for ages, now I can get original hardware for cheaper. definitely getting one. fingers crossed its as good as they are promising.

That's neat! The packaging looks like a console from the old days!
... it can output comopsite video, right?
has RGB output via original din port. it just now has hdmi added and usb c power.

I want it bad for new sticks that are wireless. The ones on the original are real short. For reals like 4 feet or so. A new memory card for sure. and of course HDMI out. So that leaves me to believe there'll be internal settings I hope, where could turn on filters and aspect ratio.

Carts I wish they release: Real Bout (the first one for me), Art of Fighting 3, KOF 98.

I just wish they could put extras in there like an arranged soundtrack option. Because while the OST most of the time sounds good, the damn AST sounds SO much better.

What was the initial statement from Plaion? (April 16, 2026)

Commenting on the launch of the new NEOGEO AES+ console, software and accessories, Ben Jones, Commercial Director of PLAION REPLAI said, “NEOGEO remains peerless in the eyes of arcade enthusiasts who were never inclined to accept anything less than the authentic arcade experience. For 35 years, SNK’s hardware has continued to astonish gamers with the system’s game collection which includes a wealth of great titles, somehow only improving with age, and remaining timeless classics to this day. We are beyond excited to reintroduce this legendary system to modern gamers, in a way that refuses to compromise on the integrity of the original hardware and collecting experience, now priced at a level which every gamer can finally afford. We look forward to unveiling more news throughout the year and cannot wait for gamers to get reacquainted with the 100Mega Shock that only NEOGEO can provide.”

Did the NEOGEO+ sell its projected 1-year supply in just one day? And how did the sales end up after that? (April 23, 2026)

Lars Wingefors

As we reflect on how Neo Geo AES+ has been received over the past week, it’s hard not to pause for a moment.

The reception from the global retro community over the past week has been nothing short of overwhelming. Within the first 24 hours, we took more paid preorders than our entire annual forecasted volume of the Neo Geo AES+. Since then, sales have continued strongly through our own channels, online retailers, and specialist stores. Seeing the console currently ranked #1 on Amazon US across the entire Video Games category is both humbling and deeply inspiring. The team are now updated our production forecasts ahead of the launch Nov 12.

But what makes me happiest isn’t the numbers themselves, but what they represent. Neo Geo AES+ is a clear example of how passion, cultural heritage, and business can come together. The retro business is very close to my heart, and there is something special about projects where history is not only preserved but allowed to live on and create new value. In this context, the role of the Embracer Games Archive has been crucial. Its work is a prerequisite for projects like this to even be possible, and I want to particularly highlight the importance of that contribution.

A big and heartfelt thank you to 株式会社SNK(SNK CORPORATION) (below picture is when the former SNK CEO Kenji Matsubara-san visiting the archive in Karlstad last year) for trusting us to take this journey in bringing back the Neo Geo AES. When stewarding an iconic brand, genuine trust and a shared long-term vision is vital and that is exactly what this project has been built on. Special thanks to Ben Jones, Martin Lindell, CRAIG MCNICOL and everyone else who made this happen.

The continued journey of Neo Geo AES+ particularly the ongoing conversations around which additional titles may follow the first ten releases is something I follow with great anticipation. This truly feels like the beginning of something new.

It was long-time ago I got such excited for a new product. Ordered my Ultimate set last friday. Anyone else that has pre-ordered?

EIGHTY EURO REPRINT CARTS
HUNDRED EURO JOYSTICKS
THIRTY EURO MEMORYCARDS
Animated GIF
The joystick is actually not that absurd.
The memory cards and especially the carts though, yeah.

The only justification they can have for those prices is if they are remanufacturing them down to the chip level, since that actually would be expensive, but if these aren't that in depth then they are highway robbery, no other way to put it.

I will keep emulating or one day by an OG used if I can. Directly funding the butcher of Jamal Khashoggi is not something I can bring myself to do.

It took everything in me to not pre order if I am being completely honest. However, I've got a dentist appointment this month and zero health insurance so I had to "adult" and tell myself no. I am also a little afraid of (what I have heard, could be wrong) ..the potentially 90$ carts. 90$ a pop to play various classics is just too much with gas being 4$+ a gallon and food being insanely costly to boot. It's funny because the original priced out a lot of people and I think the price of games the 2nd time around may have the same effect particularly if were talking about "1 game to 1 cart" status quo.

Hello everybody. I'm namer Merli, and I'm the senior product marketing manager at Play On Replay Global. And I'm here today to answer 10 of the most frequently asked questions about the Neo Geo AES Plus.

Okay, so the first question is, is the Neo Geo AES Plus officially licensed by SNK?

The simple answer is yes. The console, the accessories, all the games are officially licensed. It is the fruit of a collaboration between SNK and Play On Replay. So there you go. Yes, officially licensed by SNK.

Okay. Second question is about the analog AV output.

A lot of people have been asking about that. So as you know, the, uh, Neo Geo AES Plus features an HDMI output, so you can plug it to your regular modern TVs, but it also features an analog AV output for you CRTs enthusiasts out there. So you can, uh, plug into your old TVs and these outputs in RGB with stereo sound.

Now, third question, do the games include a manual?

Yes. All 10 games that will be launching together with the console will be including a manual inside the box.

Four questions still about the games. Are the games region-free?

I am pleased to say that all games for the Neo Geo AES Plus are indeed region-free, so regardless whether you buy, you know, the international version, the Japanese version, they will work on any version of the console.

Okay. Fifth question, still staying on the games, which is a very hot topic, [laughs] I understand. So are the new games compatible with the old Neo Geo machine from the '90s?

Very simple question with a very simple answer, which is yes. All the new games that we are re-releasing are fully compatible with the old machines from the '90s, and vice versa. All the original old games will be compatible with the Neo Geo AES Plus. So if you have an existing library at home, you will be be- able to play on the new machine.

What about the accessories?

Again, asking about cross-compatibility between the old systems and the new system. Same deal as with the games. All the new accessories will be fully compatible with the old machines from the '90s and vice versa. All the original accessories, so your arcade sticks, game pads, memory cards, they are fully compatible with the new Neo Geo AES Plus.

Question number seven, can you use the wireless arcade stick with a wired connection?

Once again, yes, you can. So the wireless arcade stick will be usable wirelessly, of course, uh, using this dongle. Uh, this is not quite the final version, but it will be exactly like this with a 15-pin connection, meaning you can also use it on your original Neo Geo. Uh, so yeah, they will plug in wirelessly using this. But together with that, inside the box, you will also be provided a cable. Again, 15-pin cable, which will basically turn your wireless arcade stick into a wired one. So you can use it either wirelessly or wired. Up to you.

Does the Neo Geo AES Plus include a power supply?

Answer is again, yes. All versions of the Neo Geo AES Plus console will have a power supply included within the box.

Where can I pre-order the Neo Geo AES Ultimate Edition?

Okay, so as you know, the Neo Geo AES Ultimate Edition is our most premium offering, which is a single product, a single bundle with everything, pretty much everything in it. So you got the console, all the accessories, the 10 game, all in one thing. And the Ultimate Edition is an exclusive to playonreplay.com website. So that's the only place in the world where you can pre-order it now.

Okay, last question, can I buy the white version of Metal Slug separately?

So unfortunately not. The white cartridge Metal Slug is an exclusive item included only in the Neo Geo AES Anniversary Edition, which also includes a white console, white arcade stick, and white memory card. So, uh, that version specifically for Metal Slug will only be included in that product. But of course, you can pre-order the standard version of Metal Slug sold separately together with other nine incredible games.

So there you go. Those were 10 of the most frequently asked questions about the Neo Geo AES Plus. I would like to thank you, all of you, again, for the support, the hype, the excitement about the announcement of this product, and I'm really glad to see you guys are as excited as we are about the return of the king.
