the dpad problem

Different sauce for different meals, jah?
I dig me a D-pad.
But, NGL, that Neo-Geo control is tasty!

Different sauce for different meals, jah?
More like ketchup vs actual pizza sauce made from actual tomatoes, pepeprs, basil and garlic. But yeah I persoanlly prefer my bottle of Heinz ketchup, that I was sucking on since I was a toddler. Heinz design was a revolution in the fast food world, especially for bunchuping (practise of eating burger buns with only ketchup). Most people don't need anything that tastes any good, the red goo is good enough as long as it's loaded with sugar. Actual sauce is only good for gourme tournaments and people with professional palates, but even amongst them there exist those who prefer ketchup, since over long years of practice they conditioned their saliva to decompose ketchup into atomic particles then quickly recompose it into their favorite sauce before it hits their tastebuds, and that process makes actual sauce taste slightly off when they try it.

I feel that arcade stick is superior for any 2d game: A good lever is far more precise than any d-pad, you have faster access to all buttons and you can press and hold any of them simultaneously.
You can also play for hours without getting tired, especially in action intensive games such as shmups, platformers and obviously fighting games. Playing Under Night (Yuzuriha) on pad nearly destroyed my hands.
I too am a Saturn convert. I've never had a dpad feel so good since... also so many dpads are just straight not made well. Looking at you steam deck, why is up-left so hard for you?!
the advent of 3d gaming slowly but surely killed good d-pad design in modern pads, they can't be bothered to make something good if modern mainstream games barely use it, and never require any precise input with it. The Dualsense is a downgrade from the dualshock 3 and just look how shit the Switch's pro controller is.

New challenger appears! OMG the dpad module alone cost almost as much as a whole ass 8bitdo Neo Geo pad xD I can't find any pictures of the insides, but if it's the *UT2004 annauncer voice* METAL DOMES, then it's definitely not worth it. If it's actual microswitches, then... still not worth it, but at least unique. Now my question is why don't they make a module for their modular controller with the Pocket Color's stick? Then I would at least envy people who can affort that thing.
Yeah, that trustmaster thing seems like snake oil to me.
You know why they aren't making microswitched pads: it's hard, expensive and few people care; SNK managed to pull it off once because they were once a company with an extremely high standard of quality; they were fighting game devs and most of AES library was fighters, they understood well how important it was to have good, precise controllers for their exclusive home releases.

Too bad that 8bitdo is a far cry from 90s SNK and released a pale, barely functional imitation of the Neo Geo CD pad while claiming it was 100% accurate. I think these guys are no better than any other third-party modern controllers manufacturer, they made the SN30, which was lightning in a bootle, but all their other releases are quite mediocre

oh nooo, what's wrong with em? I almost ordered one the other day, will have to do more research...

The throw on the pad is way too long, so to hit the gate/switch you need to tilt it much further than the original

Ah well, that's a shame, but maybe it'll still be better than a dpad for an absolute noobster like me. I'm also not averse to modding it.

Reading up on 8bitdo I stumbled upon another example of clicky stick on a pad.
PDP Versus Fighting Pad

No teardown photos, but from what I'm reading it's a different construction and might be using mouse button style switches? Intriguing!

Typing this on a mechanical keyboard right now - there is a massive difference in switched vs padded keys
Now apply this logic to controllers, since mechanical switches are relatively cheap these days - I don't wanna pay $150+ for the newest razer controller which I feel like it appeals to the cod bros and less to the functional user

I tried the 8bitdo, and I can totally see how it can be a disappointment to a fan of the original, and I might have been pissed at it too if I didn't get the advance warning, but at the same time I can also see how some detached engineer in some remote lab might have arrived at that with some excuses like longevity (the switch clicks near the end of travel of the stick while the original you can press further after the click for quite a bit and I imagine that would wear the switches faster) or noob friendliness (I would sometimes accidentally hit diagonals with the crisper orignial, while it's pretty much impossible with 8bitdo, kind of like a bike with training wheels) combined with limitation of having to stick to the original design too closely due to the way it was marketed. It doesn't hinder me at all at my skill level, while pretty much any dpad would, so I'm happy with it, and wouldn't call it "a pale, barely functional imitation", and gotta commend 8bitdo proving everyone who says it's too expensive to make wrong. Shower em with money and praize and we'll probably eventually get something as good or even better than the original, be snobs and trash em for minor issues like that - and well get SNK ROFL at us with neo geo mini pads selling better than 8bitdo.

That's an interesting point, but they did advertise it as being 1:1 replica.

I did purchase it though and I criticize 8bitdo's products in the hopes of them improving as an hardware manufacturer, which is something the company's really needs to do.
People being disgusted with those NeoGeo pads is what led to them to developing their own version, which actually has the microswitches (and yes I do own one of those shitty mini pads, not the mini console itself because I'm not paying for roms)

To the point of showing the internals in their advertising which means they couldn't make a
version, which actually has the microswitches
or something else that might have made more sense to replicate the same feel while also being easier and cheaper to make. As such they did a really good job from what I can gather to the point that all you need is slightly stronger springs to bring it to the feel of the original, I don't think that's a manufacturing quality issue, more like a "bad" R&D decision. Criticize by all means, but gotta be a bit more realistic, it wasn't a crowdfunding campaign, they did all of that at a cost in hopes to make profit, beyond of just satisfying the 3 of us who know what the original felt like.

True enough, perhaps I should mod it but honestly, I've always preferred the neo geo stick over the cd pad, so I'd rather use my arcade stick (which I use for everything that's doesn't use analog input)

I would love a controller that swapped the d-pad for the SNK clicky stick. It would be perfect for Street Fighter 6. Constantly switching between my fight stick and controller in World Tour mode is annoying.

It's great when you're using the d pad for movement, but when it comes to using it for other actions it feels awful.

For example; while experimenting with the default control configs for metal gear solid on psp I came across one that bound the equip buttons to the nub (analog). Movement with the d pad felt fine, but having to slide the nub to the right, recenter it, then slide it right again to do what could be accomplished with 2 presses of the d pad irked me.

I've never tried the clicky stick you posted though, maybe I would find it more tolerable?

The reason? Price. Also the fact that many casual-to-hardcore modern gamers don't care about this kind of D-Pad.

(When I say "hardcore", I mean Call of Duty & Valorant (if they are even using a controller) fans, not retro gamers)

Lol the bobobo bump

as much as i love that controller and the switches nyo, a good dpad for me is a must for fighting games and shmups nowdays, nyo!!

sadly i have encountered quite a bunch of new controllers with a not great dpad behaviour yet from day 1

i am a staunchly stubborn Steam Controller user since i first got one in 2016 when most the internet clowned on them incessantly

it has ruined all forms of game input for me now, joysticks are now the enemy, pure ergonomic design failure.

i got a steamdeck but it is unfortunately designed for joystick users first, and the change of their trackpads to square shaped still feels wrong to me. when using both joysticks, it is a perfectly ergonomic device, very nice etc.
however, if using the deck like i would the Steam Controller, it is uncomfortable to maintain for a significant period, both thumbs on the trackpads and fingers on the triggers.
that is to say the preferred Steam Controller way is both thumbs on trackpads at all times because once you are comfortable enough a steam controller user the aim of your profiles is to basically eliminate all need for your thumbs to be taken off the trackpads. it feels cool to do stuff like having ABXY on a click activated outer ring binding, eliminating the need to press the dedicated ABXY hardware buttons.

the Steam Controller has made me see the light with trackpads and their extended poweruser potential. it has however made me go ew yucky at the prospect of needing to use a joystick or god forbid click one of those suckers in for an L3 or R3. in a Steam Controller 2 i would remove all other face buttons, add trackpads for the back grip buttons and remove the joysticks/dpads. start/back/steam/... still fine but otherwise just mainline those trackpads straight into my veins pls gabe

I ordered one recently, thinking it would be awesome, the 8bitdo one

Turns out it's "clicky" it makes noise I don't like that. Well that's too bad.

Wow, I can't believe that OP was permabanned for suggesting we move away from D-Pads. Literally 1984. Perhaps one day, a young wayward d-pad *COUGHSEGASATURNCOUGH* could end this cycle of hate and pity...
