A true labor of love, Redux brings several enhancements and optional patches to Terranigma.
Text rendering was redone, and the script rewritten for clarity where it was confusing or unclear before; punctuation was also standardized.
On the gameplay side of the spectrum, equipment was retooled (and magic, as well, if desired) in such a way that gear is no longer a linear progression but rather presents interesting choices to the player.
Further, it also includes the NTSC patch as standard for smooth play, and more optionals.
Okay, so if I want to use optional patches like 2X enemy and Boss health then I will need to apply the NTSC patch afterward? If that's the case, if you could include the NTSC patch in the optional folder for convenience sake I would be grateful. A small Readme in the Optional Patches folder explaining this process would be appreciated as well to keep people from being confused when things don't work right.
Also, I've never played this title before, Is Magic overpowered? I don't want it to be an instant win button but I also don't want it to be so weak that it's pointless/detrimental to use it. Which Magic Damage patch is the most balanced?
Yes that is the incase, and I have the NTSC in the individual folder.
romhacking will be updated asap but Plaza has been updated today.
The individual folder has been removed and all patches there will be uploaded separately. On romhacking I’ve uploaded the harder final boss and visible Overworld map icons separately, already. so only the optional patches will remain so it can be less confusing. The README on Plaza is updated to explain patching order.
Magic will be updated in README.
Redux magic system is rebalanced already, where damage now scales based on how much Magriock it costs to use. I would recommend just keeping it the way.
Thank you for clarifying. Truly great work! What is the next steps to reach the "Redux is completed" level? Is there an ETA? I really want to play this gem the best way possible.
No ETA as of yet. Right now I am still working on polishing the script,. The retranslation is done but there’s still some text that can be better formatted.
So I don’t know how other retranslation were made but with Terranigma, it was a fight. The text originally was 16X16 so when updating it to 8X16, line breakers would now be mid sentence. that’s why when using the 8X16 patch the text only uses half the screen.
With that there’s time I would have to retranslate the text, just to look appealing and official. so I feel there’s still places I can fix to fill in more space within text boxes.
so currently V1.9.1 is the best version to play, where by the time V2.0 comes out which will be the complete version, will only have polishing and maintenance done.

Thank you for posting Redux! This has been a goal of mine since creating it, so to see it here is just an amazing feeling.
I wanted to clear up some things to help with the confusion. So when I originally made redux, while still in beta, I created a few patches for Terranigma. Due to Redux being beta, I was told to upload any individual patches or optional patches to redux.
Now that where on the release version, I updated both romhacking and plaza.
As of 7/9 the individual folder has been removed, and all patches within that folder are added separately to their respective sites. The individual folder were just patches of features that already exist in Redux.
Optional patches are to customize redux and are still there.
Magic damage patches have also been removed from optional folder. Reason being is because those damage patches were created before I fully rebalanced the magic system.
So to make it less confusing, I have removed them all from the folder and have added one separate patch that has the same balancing as Redux. This patch is currently on romhacking and has been removed from the optional patch folder.
I hope this explanation helps everyone understand why those patches were there, and hope you all understand why they were removed.
Hello, I’m author of redux and I can clarify. Redux already has all individual patches applied. these are meant for vanilla version of Terranigma. Optional patches are for customizing redux itself. The reason for the individual patches is because on romhacking, I was told by them, instead of uploading them separately on their site to just add them to redux.
The reason to reapply the NTSC patch when using optional patches is because Terranigma originally being PAL 50FPS, for compatibility with the vanilla version the patches themselves have the original version in mind. so applying the NTSC over optional patches fixes that compatibility.
So yes Redux has NTSC applied, but if using other patches which are still without NTSC, it causes issues, so applying NTSC fixes those issues.
I can add this to the README file and anything else suggested. this is my first project so be patient as possible.

I plan to have a separate version of the translation once Redux is completed.

I clarified in another comment but I’ll explain. Individual patches are already included in Redux. Individual patches are meant for vanilla version of Terranigma. Alt cover if anyone needs it, with nod to Faydgamer. For Private and retrogametalk use only please, as this is my personal emulator covers I make for myself. I only share and post here.
Damn, might have to give this game another try. I was really getting into it, but I got stuck when the game opens up more and you have to complete various tasks. I lost track of where I had to go next
Try out Redux! The translation should give you better guidance on where to go without directly telling you. I’ve made it with new players and veterans in mind.
Are the optional patches ready to go to add ? the site mentions a specific order to apply the hack/redux & optional content, also what is the magic damage numbers ? seems to be hardly anything written in the readme text file!!
Redux>Optional>NTSC
sounds like you have already patched the ntsc in so in theory the optional patches shouldnt work as it should be the second hack to apply before the ntsc.ips
seems like applying this ourselves would be the better option no?

i'm sure this is a great version of the game to play and all, but personally i wish i just had the option for the re-translation by itself.
i'm not really interested in the gameplay changes myself.

Might sound heretical, but I also want some easy mode hacks to go along with these changes. I've played some of these games already, lemme steamroll it so I can enjoy the retranslation!

Ah, apologies. I only read the description here and "script rewritten" makes it sound like they just edited the original retail English translation to clear up some things, but I see now it says Retranslation.
However, I don't think this is the retranslation I was originally hoping to see. I believe someone else was working on one years ago but stopped updating at some point. From the look of things, Redux doesn't seem to have anything to do with that one.

I've been playing and the text still requires more polish. I've been collecting such instances and I'll forward them to the patch author at some point.
If I never played the game, but want to experience it as close to how the devs were intended it to be, it it a good idea to play Redux or original rom? I mean, does Redux take liberties with translation and gameplay?
For example, I don't like Redux for Link to the Past, cause they redid the UI and gameplay. But I like the retranslation, cause they restored the original Japanese meaning.
But in case of Castlevania: Circle of the Moon I loved the enhanced edition where they redid the card system and put them in the world in metroidvania fashion.
Could you give me here an advice?

Can there be added just a retranslation + NTSC patch, maybe? For guys who don't want any gameplay changes?

Ayy I figured 1.9.1 was finally the completed release. That's why I downloaded it and patched it myself a few days ago when it came up on romhackplaza. I was thinking of telling you to add it to the repo, but then I figured if it really was the completed release then you'd for sure add it to the repo without me poking you about it
