TV Series Super Sentai fan thread

It's Official, Super Sentai is ending

In one way I'm sad but in another since I'm more of a Showa/Early Heisei fan I think I'm not that sad because the latest seasons were clearly aimed at a fairly young audience to sell toys...

I have all time to watch the series I want to watch (like Megaranger and Dekaranger) than having to wake up very early or staying up late to see the latest season's current episode each week.

Though it's been uploaded by a sparodic mix of channels, you can watch a chunk of Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger on YouTube with subs.

It was were I got started with Super Sentai after becoming a fan of MMPR as a kid. Although I admit my experience outside this series is limited, it's a pretty good series IMO and offers a very different experience to the western interpretation of the show.

OMG I feel like I'm the only person who's a little bummed that Sentai is ending, I'm like rushing to finish Donbrothers since I skipped out on pretty much all late Heisei/Reiwa stuff. Idk, I'm sure there were some Reiwa actors out there that would've been excited for a future reunion/special for their series...idk I feel bad for some of them especially bc they're around the same age as me. (But on the other hand for KR you see Zi-O's actor who really wants to move tf on from toku.)

kinda relevant but watching kamen rider kuuga made me realize that i might prefer watching older tokusatsu over newer tokusatsu. Like I don't wanna complain that a show that gets its money from merchandise is doing the thing it's supposed to do, but I was invested in every character in Kuuga. I cared about everyone. It was captivating. Magical.

Also, Kuuga has, so far, been the only season I finished when it comes to KR, but also just tokusatsu in general.

Not sure why people don't check the catsite, it's not like the site is dead or anything. It's always active especially for newer episodes.
You should try watching the other early Heisei series (Agito-Hibiki), they're still pretty good. Also older toku would be considered stuff like Black RX (before KR took a long hiatus).

I think that Kuuga had some slower moments and some other parts that felt rushed towards the end but it was a great revival (like 2005 Dr Who in a way, the main actor has quit right after).

I think I still prefer Agito but that's because of nostalgia and seeing three different riders (especially a mechanical one).

Radiguet is so cool.

When a Kid made a better sentai suit than a Multi-Billion Dollar Company (Hasbro).

I watched Goranger, Bioman, Maskman, Turboranger, Fiveman, Jetman, Zyuranger, Dairanger, Ohranger, Megaranger and Gingaman.

Luckily my mom has a tape of Goranger so it's my first Super Sentai to watch.

Jetman is my favourite sentai overall. It's so much better than the others in almost every way - and very watchable as an adult. In fact even when it originally aired it was very popular with adults (especially women) for its drama elements.

The motivations and politics of the villains was great to watch and their designs were very cool. They weren't simple villains. Highlights for me was Radiguet being human for an episode, and the final fight between Gai and the robot dude - I forget his name, it's been a while. That robot was the "bad guy but with a code of honour" type which I enjoyed.

From Metal Heroes my favourite is probably Metalder overall for similar reasons. Good drama, politics among the villains, and good fight scenes.

Most other sentai and metal heroes shows weren't as good for me, the action scenes weren't as polished generally with lots of quick panning / zooming which is headache inducing. Often episodes were monster of the week with barely a story holding it together and would get very silly at times.

I somewhat enjoyed but never finished a few shows due mostly to headache inducing fight scenes, as well as poorer written episodes: bycrosser, juspion, spielvan, Sharivan, machine man, jiraya, zyuranger, kakuranger, gingaman and dairanger. I might have written off gingaman too quickly but it came across as a bit kiddish. I think it was hard to enjoy most after Jetman.

Are there any metal heroes or sentai you guys recommend?

Grey? He's cool indeed.

I always liked those villains that were still having principles.

Sadly this is the best way to do it (afaik). All the sites with them always have popups so intrusive that you'd be lucky to watch Episode 1 with no intrusion

Yes, Grey. That was it. I just re-watched that last battle again, Gai lighting Grey's last cigar at the end was cool. There was mutual respect. It never occurred to me at the time but I think they both had something in common with unrequited love, but I might be reading into it too much.

From what I've read, apparently it was only really viable so long because of Power Rangers? I think once Hasbro bought out the rights, that's when they started taking a nose dive

I love Sentai, but maybe it needs a good long rest like Kamen Rider did. The new Metal Heroes show looks promising

Not to condone anything but I kinda miss classy antagonists that had a cigar and drinks wine in a fancy cup.

I also notice how he's taking affection towards Maria which is making it more complex without falling in the trap of a love triangle.

I want to believe that he's a cyborg rather than a machine in some aspects.

I get what you mean. I never really thought about it before, but subconsciously saw him as a human equivalent type of sentient robot. But cyborg makes more sense as robots don't have lungs in order to smoke cigars lol.

Classy antagonists are cool. You got me thinking of a few good ones. Vergil from DMC - has a code of honour and conducts himself with a certain level of decorum. Darcia from Wolfs Rain is another. Also villains follow a warriors code and want to fight on equal ground rather than a disadvantaged opponent - wants to win fair and square. Nosferatu Zodd is a good example. Akuma too. Also the blonde haired antagonist from Sword of the Stranger.

Not to go on a complete tangent, I think the samurai monster from ginga man is the same too. I think he was a blue demon samurai?

Sadly the lore about Jetman is quite fuzzy (there's a manga sequel but I've never read it).

I am kinda assuming that Vyram/Byram's members are from various dimensions so that's why they're all so different.

Either a cyborg or a highly advanced robot that isn't far from carbon based lifeform so that he gets the equivalent of lungs (either with silicon or any other material that has the same properties).

I notice that they're the second in command and are sometimes in conflict with the boss in some cases.

I need to watch Gingaman someday.

Speaking of which I love the design of the knight
