Port of Super Mario 64 for the DSi by Hydr8gon in February 2021. This is for the DSi, meaning it will not work on a regular DS, a DS flashcard, or a regular DS emulator, you can play this on real hardware using Twilight Menu or on RetroArch via MelonDS core. Some of you may ask, "Why the hell do I wanna use this over Super Mario 64 DS" and for those I will say... idk, maybe if you wanna play the game without the changes Nintendo made for the 2004 version like the character switching and rabbits collecting. MelonDS plays DSi games pretty good and is feature complete for everything needed. You can even install like several dozen games onto the DSi nand storage and run them all in MelonDS like a real DSi through the DSi menu and everything. I've already played like 7 DSi games with it and it works fine. Right now DSi emulation is in a good spot with MelonDS. Saying 95% won't work is just wrong. Unless you were talking about emulating DS games on a DSi? Your comment wasn't entirely clear on what you mean

A DS rom runs on any emulator for regular ds or dsi. A dsi rom only runs on a dsi emulator. I just like to be able to play my games on all of my devices. Some of the portable emulator devices that i have run ds, not dsi. That's why.

I think he means aside from MelonDS (which I feel the need to remind you not everyone has access to a powerful device, most of us use affordable hardware with old emulators) emulating DS is more accessible than DSi, you get several options wither using emulators such as DeSmume, No$GBA, No$Zoomer, and NooDs, or even playing on real hardware using any flashcard of your choice, DSi games will always be more tricky to play, it's similar to how playing Mega Drive is much easier and accessible than playing 32X, it is easier to play Mario 64 DS over this wither on an emulator or real hardware.

I hope we get ports of ocarina and majora for the original ds. Being dsi only kind of ruins it, 95% of the ways of emulating a ds game will not work with dsi.

You're not wrong but my SD card is too full on my 3DS. I use my 3DS for exclusively 3DS games, emulation of handful of consoles, and a tiny bit of DSi titles. I don't have enough storage to put a bunch of NDS roms and use Twilight Menu for them when I could just use my flashcart. I don't know of any games that use DSi features that I would care about. Other than maybe Pokemon Black/White but I'm fine playing that using the flashcart. Maybe if I ever get another SD card, but I'm pretty satisfied with my flashcart. It does everything I need and expect from it and can run DS (not DSi) homebrew, DS roms, and has support for savestates and cheats
No I hear ya, I'm exactly the same, I have a SuperCard and I mostly use it for DS games and homebrews especially because I can also use save states and cheats, but I also have a 128 gb SD in my 3DS and there's enough storage for my DS/GBA/and 3DS library, 3DS has native GBA support btw, perfect compatibility (except for gimmicky games that require special hardware) and of course Twilight Menu for DS games so I can take advantage of the enhancements.

Also as I mentioned, this is for DSi users not 3DS users since there is a better native 3DS port, it even has widescreen, 60fps and free camera, I even once found a 3DS mod that adds the maps to the bottom screen, though after a while I uninstalled it because it had issues and would crash after a while.

Compatibility with Twilight Menu is very high though, not only does every game I throw on it runs but unlike flashcards it supports DSi enhancements, widescreen support and even true analog stick for certain games like Mario 64 DS.

Also, playing a game designed with the d-pad like Mario 64 DS or Crash Bandicoot 1 with an analog stick does not magically make it analog, you are still moving in eight directions only.

I just play the regular DS version using an R4 flashcart on my 3DS. The analog of my 3DS works with the game. If I installed the DSi version I'm sure the analog would work with it too. I've never used Twilight Menu since it doesn't have full compatibility and flashcarts and .cia versions are better for regular DS and DSi on a 3DS

What about 3ds, would work in there? I know that 3ds got it's own homebrew port, but as far as I know it runs with stuttering on old 3ds.

melonds ds is the same as melonds but melonds ds is getting updates
while melonds does not get updates
This is very useful, I appreciate it 👍

Hey @Juiceala , thanks for posting this!

Can you please upload the Android version of the SM64 port, without the onscreen buttons?

I can only find it with the overlay buttons, which is horrible for playing with physical controllers.
