Star Trek (To Boldly Go)

Absolutely love Star Trek. I've been a fan since I was a kid. TNG and Voyager are my favorites of the bunch. Too bad the new Star Trek series is an absolute garbage fire. Oh well, can't all be as good as TNG, I suppose. And I'm really surprised this thread wasn't locked...

Damn it, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a necromancer.

TNG is one of the best adaptations of the series. I can see why it's so widely beloved by fans. I will say the first season is kind of slow to get going, but once it picks up it's loads of fun to watch.

I hear loads of people complain about Voyager online. Mostly because of how most episodes are one and done stories, instead of each episode being tied together. I don't have a problem with it myself, I think the series is a good time. It has a lot of good two-part episodes that make up for some of the others.

I will say there are a couple episodes, though, that I have a hard time sitting through. One is pretty obvious "Threshold" The other one I have a hard time sitting through is "Non Sequitur" as I never found Harry Kim centric episodes that engaging.

I totally agree with you about most modern Trek being a dumpster fire. It's a shame. I think the creators now have lost sight of the vision Rodenberry had in mind, because none of the newer series hold a candle to the older series in terms of story, characters, etc.

I was surprised to see it wasn't locked either. ::sailor-embarrassed
I figured reviving this thread would be better than making a duplicate similar thread, though.

Seems to me you're a little of both, Bones.

Star Trek needs to be cancelled to save the IP.

I wouldn't say they need to completely canceled. They need restructuring, though. They need to go back and see what made older treks so rewatchable and work on fixing their mistakes. I feel it still has great potential, they're just under terrible management currently.

Indeed.
I think the main reason why it's so slow was, well, look at what they had to follow in the footsteps of. Despite all its cheesiness and problems, Star Trek: The Original Series was a massively loved show. There was also, what? Almost a 20-year gap. That's a hell of a pair of shoes to step back into, and during those 18 or 20 years, TOS only grew in popularity

I can see why Voyager was disliked, honestly. I actually didn't like it on the first go, but when I gave it a real sit-down and watched it, I actually liked it. Also, Seven of Nine might have influenced my caring a little at the time.

I understand ya. Kim wasn't so bad in my eyes.. it was Neelix and that assinine doctor I couldn't stand.

I don't mean this as a political statement, but they worry too much... like most companies now about attracting new fans who honestly won't care about the I.P. and alienate the old fans who do.

And that's the Death of a I.P.

Fair point.

Seems to me you're a little of both, Bones.
DAMMIT!
Data was probably the most Fun character on TNG.
You could tell Brent Spiner had a blast playing the character, especially when Lore was in an episode as well.

Yeah, they really need to go back to TNG or even DS9 writers. Fire whoever is involved with writing and producing the IP now, and give it a full reboot back to the way it was, closer to Gene Roddenberry's original vision. Not the slop it has been for the last few series

I don't mind self-contained episodes, I'm used to them in ToS.

Yep.. especially regarding the optimistic future aspect.

NOt a fan anymore thanks to modern day slaughtering the shit out it. I grew up in the 90s watching re-runs of original series growing up watch next generation deep space 9 and enterprise just to watch it all being burned down to the ground by idiotic activists that hate every thing and every one. Watching it´s directors and actors basically cut the throat on the series.

Im no fan anymore is just turned away from it all because I can´t stand watching while brain dead shit brain people murder it for their own pleasure.

The terrible management is Alex Kurtzman, who completely destroyed the franchise as a coffee fetching sidekick to JJ Abrams in the movies. He took over the TV side of it. The production company that backed those modern movies just took over Paramount so it's anybody's guess whether or not they get rid of him.

He green lit all the horrible trash, and had to step away from Picard Season 3 which actually turned out to be a fan service TNG reunion season that retconned S1 and S2 into forgettable nonsense.

He didn't like fans actually thinking it was good (Terry Matalas made it without him), so he made a shitty offer to carry on with "Star Trek Legacy", Captain Seven of Nine aboard the Enterprise G. No budget. Had to be filmed in eastern europe for tax credits. An offer nobody would want to take. So instead he got to save face and say he made the offer, and rolled ahead with Starfleet Academy, the most disgusting and fundamentally stupid show ever produced.

At this point, cancelling it would be preferable. He wants to do a "Year One" Star Trek with Kirk/Spock/McCoy following Strange New Worlds ending, and that show has already butchered TOS characters and retconned them in various ways.

Starfleet Academy already looked odd to me.

I mean sure, seeing cadets training has been a plot point in the series before yet I feel like they wanted to make a College themed series aimed at young adults but with the Star Trek IP slapped on it.

I think people like Star Trek to see people who are already ready to discover new worlds, not the training part (imagine if a James Bond movie was only centred around his training at MI-6 rather than him doing missions around the world).
