Star Fox is back!

Like the DS version?

I feel like fans of the game wouldn't like them to touch anything...
Nah. That version was a bit of a mess, IMO. First, who wants to play a 3D platformer with a d-pad? Secondly, you start the game as Yoshi. Lastly, its graphical "improvements" were pretty minor since the DS was pretty close to the N64 all things considered. Super Mario 64 is my favorite 3D Mario and that game definitely needs a remake, from the graphics, to the camera, etc. If the Zelda fans are okay with an OoT remake, surely Mario fans can survive one. The N64 version's always there for them if they want to be purists.

One game that deserves a remake is Mario 64.
ABSOLUTELY AGREE!

Galaxy or Odyssey-like controllers would revitalize the game, alas knowing Nintendo, they will simply resell a rom at 60 bucks (Worse, some fans wiould still buy it) even at the man's anniversary

As much as I love this and want to play it I really don't want to buy a switch 2

The DS game was only partially a remake, more closer to a remaster with added stuff to it.
I think nintendo doesn't really need to remake anything except mario 64, instead how about making another F-zero game.

I'd make new levels with the same gameplay elements. Zero having a tablet gimmick is an entirely different situation than not remaking the same game. That game already is largely a remake, but instead of keeping it simple with its additions, they added a tablet mechanic that no one wants. Nintendo insists on having controllers that suck, but that is maybe a different discussion.
Yeah, the Wiimote were good for specific types of games (especially rail shooters) but I agree they have a serious issue with weird controllers and having devs work around them (even the oddness of the N64 was handled well by Rareware but the PSX DualShock controller becoming the new standard makes more sense).

That's why most people prefers the Pro Controller for any post-Gamecube Nintendo console (aside from the GC controller itself).

I haven't played Star Fox Assault but from the looks of it, it looks pretty good.
It looks good and the Arwing sections are great but there are many flaws compared to the N64 entry that it kind of hurt to not see a real successor to Lylat Wars in both shape and form.

I can handle the d-pad but I agree that a real joystick control scheme would've worked better. Crash Bandicoot is a rare exemple of a d-pad working for 3D platforming.

Yoshi should've gotten a real 3D game by that point. Graphically it has ups and lows.

I don't know if changing the controls for SM64 would break it for people as it's a surprisingly deep game in the gameplay (even deeper than most modern platformers).

Galaxy's controls were made with the planet-like platforms in mind. Even that one Mario 64 callback level in Galaxy 2 felt a bit odd compared to the original level. Odyssey had good controls but the hat gimmick trivialised many parts.

It's the tricky thing about remakes: changing things like control would fundamentally change the game.

@Ikagura Yeah that's fair. I think they could make a good proper "new" star fox game, but they've mostly fumbled around for some reason. I feel similar with DK since the original Trilogy, but at least that circled around to having Returns and Tropical Freeze. But then Nintendo insisted on doing some nonsense again (bananza)

I still agree that they could've done a direct sequel to Zero in the same vein that Starfox 2 was the sequel to the SNES game by bringing back Andross with newer levels and planets (or older planets with a new context) as well as bringing elements from Adventure and Assault with Sauria as a planet and maybe giving Krystal a redesign and new context about how the team has met her as well as Miyu and Faye but maybe that would have been too many different characters when the four members are the more known and iconic.

As for DKC, Retro Studio did a good job yet people still complained about how Returns was heavily inspired by the first DKC (I don't mind it but I also get it as it didn't take too many risks for a revival entry) while removing the water diving levels (I didn't like them that much to begin with) and not having the Kremlings but living instruments that aren't as iconic nor had the charisma of those reptiles.

I did like Tropical Freeze's Snowmads as much as people weren't fan of them but I like that the world of Donkey Kong isn't limited to just a few tribes (I don't know if Jungle Beat is canonical). Donkey Kong as a series sadly doesn't have the same aura as a Mario game and is less accessible than a Yoshi's Island so I can get why it's more niche.

But then Nintendo insisted on doing some nonsense again (Bananza).
I don't see the issue when they've finally done an original game after a decade (the Switch 1 had good ports but no new game since TF) and the first 3D DK game since the N64.

@Ikagura I've always been a much bigger DK fan, than Mario. Returns is my least favorite or the Country games, but it's still really solid. Tropical Freeze is really great though. I would like Kremlings, but I guess thats also more of the "I just want my games to remain the same" type sentiment.

I don't have a problem with it being original, or 3D. When I first heard about the possibility of a new 3D one from the Mario Galaxy crew I was excited. I just think its a very visually ugly game, and doesn't really feel like Donkey Kong.

While I think the first area in the game (after the intro) was not interesting I think that feeling far from home was the "intention" as you are no longer in the jungles of the island.

The deeper levels are better visually (at least the forest and snowy area were much more) but I also wish it was a little bit shorter and had more variety beyond the same themes we got in many games.

I do like seeing K-Rool back but it also means that the team didn't believe Void Kong was good enough as a villain so that they had to make him take the spotlight.

Now I do agree that it could've been a new 3D Wario game (please give us one) but I'd still think that DK64 wasn't flawless as a first 3D experience for the Gorilla.

Starfox 64 was one of my favs on the n64. I spent months replaying every stage to get a higher score at the end. Its sad the multiplayer aspect wasnt used much. In fact i only remember playing 4 players once with a few friends.

But i never heard anyone else mention using the multiplayer part like they do mario kart 64. I dont think they mentioned if that part of the game is returning on switch 2. Maybe it will be used since online gaming is a thing now.
