Nintendo did this with the 3DS. They had various different models including the New 3DS. Technically it was the same generation and played the same games, however it was more powerful and some games were only playable on it. Xbox One X and PS4 Pro didn't go that far. They played the same games but at better resolutions and framerates. It's not a new generation, just a mid-generation refresh of the existing platforms that are entirely optional since it plays the same games and isn't forcing you to buy a new generation consoles to continue playing. Wii U was pretty much taken off of life support after Switch released. It didn't continue to get releases for years like the other recent consoles have.
