Hmm wonder who he sold the stocks to?

Yeah, the Second Video Game Crash is coming. In the 90s, most people who played games had enough disposable income to afford to be able to blow $59.99 on a physical cardboard box or jewel case with instruction manuals and nice box art in addition to a physical storage medium containg the game. Nowadays, increasingly few people are going to have the income to blow the present day equivalent ($99.99 roughly) on a digital copy that will likely have incredibly borked copy protection that does little more than provide cybercriminals a direct route to your systems firmware. At least Toshimoto has enough sense to realize this and start cutting his losses.

Yeah it's hard to express the exact mix of emotions that go through my head when I see those two pedo cannibal shitlords. But it's probably whatever mix of happiness, hilarity and absolute hatred that the Joker felt while seeing Batman protect his rich piece of shit buddies while leaving most of Gotham to the wolves.

There will be no collapse. It's a multi billion dollar industry.

There will be a lean culling of the big studios bloated with overpaid devs that don't contribute anything of value, the platforms selling digital content will carry on, hardware advancements will stagnate until chinese fabs on-board some new supply to meet demand for memory and games will be developed for PS4 tier hardware going into the next 5 year span just to keep Switch 2 going.

Bleeding hearts will cry for the job losses, the out of reach cutting edge hardware prices, and whine about nefarious capitalism in general. Before you know it, those doomsday whiners will be middle aged, unskilled, and unemployable compared to younger people who aren't yet jaded and fucked in the head. The cycle of life will carry on.

I would say that this is either the third industry crash or the result of the second crash that happened at 2008 .
Its not a sudden crash like the Atari days . It was a crash that impacted the ship with a smaller hole but slowly declined into the sea because nobody said the painful truth and they let the problem grow into a monster that is nowadays impossible to fix .

And it all started with games going digital somehow .

Entropy eats everything in the end. Remember that next time you use that GIF.

Yes, I will bear in mind the heat death of the universe, the next time I jokingly mock trending topics around corporations that burn money on toy software, and the mental midgets that panic over them.

You make a great point- all these things combined constantly leeching enjoyment and building frustration in customers combined with the general hardship the Great Recession brought upon the population led a lot of people to give up on the hobby, or at least cut back and focus on retro and indie games.

When those people came back, if they came back (usually in 2020 when people had nothing to do except play GTA or go out and live GTA) they often found a hobby significantly less enjoyable than it was prior thanks to all the stupid nickel & diming DLC, P2W crap and outright garbage games that are prevelant. That, combined with the continued aftershocks of the Great Recession, COVID and various idiotic foreign wars has made it so the average consumer has no disposable income left to shell out for overhyped, unenjoyable and often broken gaming experiences.

Exactly !
Dont forget how many studios were bought up during the times from 2008 till now . Most are now on Sonys and Mircosofts hands now while a lot of IPs still stuck either in Limbo or cant be touched because alot of those huge Game-companies dont wanna make good games and get payed by DEI , Blackrock and such out of a reason that it was more profitable to do activism instead making good games . Can i blame them for going the easy money-route ? Not entirely because its understandable that the huge sums of free money for doing activism is hard to say no to it but they never thought about that it was bound with alot of hooks that made this a temporarly offer with a guarenteed deadly end .

The recession made gaming into a bloated cost-mess while the budgets get into the Billions , they didnt knew that its impossible to get that high profits out of one game to get the break-even-point even if they infused with Micro-transactions and used the Life-service modell too . They thought that providing the constant updated quantity of content into infinity in one game would be the infitnite-money glitch in the industry but it wasnt the case and the burn-out opg such games became reality . The quality of the customer service , games and the content was very whiplashing betwenn satisfying and utter disgut after some time and it ended up as damage-control management and not an game-industry .

We can say alot about wokeness and its own consequences and what not ,thanks to DEI and Blackrock influences but the industry headed already since the XBox 360 and PS3 gen into a Dumpster-fire that was way too fast in an uncontrollable state to course-correct and destined to doom while companies tried to delay that unavoidable crash with ham-fisted approaches and abysmal management . Wokeness was the symptom and the Nitro-boost that brought this demise to themselves .

Im not pessimistic about it . In fact im quite happy and optimistic that this happens . This opens new ways and opportunities when this industry finally burned down to the ground which allows us to build a new one that isnt bound to stock-markets and back into a DIY-state and back being a hobby without corporate advertisement campaign and constant money-squeezing to play games . It was long overdue .
