Maybe I'd sound like I'm complaining but I wish 2D fangames could not always try to replicate Mania's style and overuse that same falling sprite from CD.
I agree. More fan games should have a unique style. Having a unique style really makes a fan game stand out.

Sonic Storm had a really unique feel compared to the rest.

I'd almost say that SRB2 since the 2.2 clearly had a Mania influence but to the detriment of SSNTails' style which gave this game an unique flair.

I like the Chaotix inspired Knuckles sprite in Mania.
I find Sonic to be a bit too bright that's my only comment.

Sonic Adventure – No remake or remaster planned

The escape from the Orca is the magic moment of Sonic Adventure's this is not very interactive but graphically impressive at the Dreamcast time.

Takashi Iizuka the head of the Sonic Team has now clarified that there are currently no plans for a remake or remaster of Sonic Adventure. Instead the company is fully focused on new titles.

Sonic Adventure was released in PAL territories on October 14, 1999 for the Dreamcast. Later versions for GameCube, PS3 and Xbox 360 followed.

It's because they can't recreate this orca scene. ::winkfelix lol

The fans usually restore Sonic games. There's mods for SA1 and 2. There's a new version of Sonic 2006 now too. lol

It's too bad. The game could use some jank removal.
You could make it control nicer with tiny tweaks.
You could improve the campaign with tiny changes to level design and removing Big entirely.

If it re-releases as a boost game, has less hub backtracking and maybe only needs you to play as Sonic maybe it could work.

Sonic Generations had Speed Highway and Emerald Coast.

but then it wouldnt really be sonic adventure would it...

personally i dont see the point in wanting SA1 and 2 remake/remasters. mods already fix most of the issues. it would be nice if the steam port for SA1 was fixed and made more like the dreamcast though...

So, Sonic Adventure having a remaster has been a topic discussed in the fandom for about as long as I’ve been in it, and probably longer. It’s the kind of project people keep getting their hopes up for despite evidence always being shaky. It’s never been planned to be in development, but people always talk about it because, well… people want it. So most discussion about it “potentially happening” has always been confirmation bias.

Quite frankly, I think in the eyes of SEGA: they DID remaster Sonic Adventure. Back in 2003. DX is that remaster. And that sucks to hear for a lot of people because, over the years, that version of the game has become more and more disliked. Alongside that, people want to play Sonic Adventure again AT ALL on modern platforms. Or play it for the first time, because Sonic is one of the few series where every single title is always relevant to fandom discussion. The sad truth is that I think SEGA has lost the source code, which is something they’re infamous for doing. And not just the Dreamcast original, which would account for why it’s never been ported, but the DX version as well since it’s been over 13 years since that version of the game was last ported to anything.

In short: don’t get your hopes up for an official Adventure remaster. Or remake. If it ever does happen, that’s cool, but it’s clearly not in the cards right now and probably won’t be ever again. If you need to take your frustrations out on anything, here’s the official Sonic Adventure bop bag:

To me that's what killed the franchise, making it ONLY about Sonic and making it boost only. I see fans all the time asking for their favorite characters to come back and be playable or for them to get their own games. Mostly it's requests for Knuckles, Shadow, Silver, Blaze, Rouge, and Cream. Dunno why Cream. She was playable in Heroes and Advance 2, but I don't think she can carry her own game. But there's people who want to play something new or at least something different in the same universe.

One of the reasons I didn't love Mania is because it was so hell bent on recreating the Genesis games that it didn't have its own voice or style. It felt kind of soulless to me. But people were so desperate for a good 2d Sonic game that they all came in their pants when Mania was released.

It’s always been shocking to me how little content there is in total around Super Sonic. There are only three major pieces of concept art for the form that have ever been officially released:

This sketch page of the form and a bunch of boss designs from Sonic 2.
IMG_7042.jpeg

This alleged redesign of the form from Sonic Adventure’s development, courtesy of Naoto Oshima of all people.

And this famous wallpaper-like design from the development of Sonic Frontiers.

All of this is super weird. Oshima designed the Sonic 2 version of Super Sonic, but that’s all we know. We have no existing concept art for Sonic 3, despite how integral the form was in that game’s story. Sonic Frontiers is the most front and center Super Sonic has ever been, yet we only have a single piece of concept art that shows him. And Sonic Adventure’s strange redesign has no explanation, despite it clearly showing them trying to get away from the super saiyan inspired version of the form.

I think SEGA at large has always been on edge about Super Sonic, as it is a sort of grey area with him. I don’t think it’s copyright infringement, but I think SEGA as a whole doesn’t want to take the risk. He’s used in a lot of games, but he has relatively little merch made until recently, and SEGA for a long time seemed to be wary of putting him in any other media.

Plus, let’s not forget the Nazo concept, which was a scrapped Super Sonic redesign for Sonic X that became a famous fan villain.

I don't like that two thirds of the stages are reused from previous games. Mania should've had all original stages.

I'm down for Ultra Instinct Sonic and Ultra Ego Shadow. Maybe leave the regular yellow super form for the other characters LOL

Maybe not those exact things, but I love how we are now in a world where Super forms are allowed to be cool anime power up forms again. This was an idea touched on in the mid 90’s through to the 2000’s, before being put on the back burner in the 2010’s. Now that Frontiers and Movie 2 & 3 have made Super form combat more prominent, I would love to see more expansions to Super forms. I think it’s right to not fall into power creep, but it may be cool to have the Super Sonic 2 idea be expanded upon.

In short, I would love to have Cyber Sonic stick around as a “Super Sonic when he loses control of the chaos” kind of thing. It could make for cool story moments, visuals, and perhaps some awesome gameplay sequences.

I also would love to see the “Maximum Heat Knuckles Attack” get expanded on. Knuckles, I feel, doesn’t need forms as much. He’s already super strong and he’s the guardian of the Master Emerald, so him using the power of the emeralds is cool but feels weird.

If the movies are going to turn “The Flames of Disaster” into a powered up form for Knuckles, I think the “Maximum Heat” move would be a great way to take that movie inspiration back into the games. I mean, it’s in the name: maximum heat. Sounds like flames of disaster to me, right?

What I love that Dragon Ball does now is that they have given the saiyins their own unique upgrade paths. Gohan is beast which represents his unique potential, Goku is Ultra Instinct mirroring the angels, and Vegeta is Ultra Ego mirroring the Gods of Destruction. Even a non saiyin like Piccolo has his own suped up "Orange" form now too and Frieza has the Black form. Super saiyin is now the bland, entry level super form for saiyins before they branch off into whatever fits their personality and particular abilities.

It would be cool to see something similar in Sonic where Amy, Tails, Knuckles, etc. could all have their own suped up forms.

All this super talk reminds me of how much I adore the meta-game that is Super Form maintenance. I’ve always felt that turning the common item, rings, into fuel for a powerful and fun to play form was the best move they could have ever made. I’ve also always felt that for super forms to be fun, they need to provide more air mobility so that you can take unique shortcuts. This is why the Doom Wings we got last year in Shadow Generations is by far and away my favorite “super form” that we’ve ever gotten. Not only can you play by Doom Wing rules or normal form rules at the flick of a toggle before you start a level, but the wings give you both a double jump and glide that you can combine with the normal moves you’ve already been practicing. In the current Sonic game engine, flying through levels is the most fun thing to do. Having an entire form whose sole purpose is to make that into something you can do whenever you want is incredibly fun. Combine that with the more open design of the game’s stages, and you have some of the most fun I’ve ever had in a game with messing around with level design.

My only issue is that they chose to write the story as to remove the power from Shadow after the events of the game, which means they probably won’t come back in a meaningful way in the future. Real shame, because it’s one of the best designed extra forms we’ve ever seen.

I'm not a big fan of Super Sonic having a next level. It undermines Super Sonic which was already powerful.

Hyper Sonic being a bonus before anything else.

Sonic Colours having no Super Sonic final boss was also quite refreshing and it isn't a big deal since for the first time in decades Super was playable in normal levels.

And I see you there. Again, my biggest worry is the idea that the Sonic series will fall into the power creep trap of so many other things.

What I generally want to see, beyond another form or whatever, is Super Sonic being cool and shocking. It’s been a couple years since Frontiers, and the flash of that moment is in my rear view. They can’t replicate that moment, no matter how hard they may try. What we need now is substance, and I again point to the Doom Wings as an example of that. So, I would love to see Super Sonic and Doom Wings combined together mechanically and for us to go from there.

Super Sonic, more than anything, needs to never be boring. I’ve seen Sonic run faster and jump higher. I’ve seen him be invincible. I’ve seen him fly. I’ve seen him pick up a giant sword and slice a guy in half with it. Super Sonic is a very delicate thing, because it always needs to be cool and exciting whenever it’s used. I think that’s why people love the idea of forms beyond so much: it’s a band-aid solution to the problem of over familiarity with Super Sonic. Super Sonic always needs to have a wow factor in order to really work, and that’s easier said than done.
