I've been cancelled by the gods themselves
Nothing can stop me now

Yes and no? I mean no to current product but if the product is old and they're probably not getting any royalties from it like say buying from second hand sellers then I say go for it. I have the complete collection of Rurouni Kenshin the mega volumes. Now just google that series and look at the author and read his charge and the minor fine he received. In all honesty I think I'm more disgusted by the legal system's handling than the fact he basically took a mini vacation from his new work on the series and was able to continue with little to no hassle. That's his new series not the old that I have so I can easily not consume that content but what does that mean for the anime I watched and manga I currently have?

I can't part with them, at least not now. He might have created the manga but more people were involved with the anime that I consumed more of and Kenshin was one of my many anime husbandos. It's hard to put hate to someone I cherished that had no control on his master's doings. I'll probably sell them one day (I saw one of them go for $40 bucks) but until then I'll keep Kenshin on my shelf.

Was he involved in pedo shit? Damn, that is such a shame. Rurouni Kenshin was one of the animes that was foundational in my youth. Taught me more about values and friendship than my own family, lol. I can't understand how a guy who could write so beautifully about life can also be ok with exploiting children like that.

But to be fair, the pedophilia stuff is a huge problem in the manga/anime community. It has been normalized in Japan to the point of absurdity. People rationalize some of the content as being purely imaginary, but I shudder to think where they get the visual references for some of their images. I guess this case gives you a hint where they might get their ideas.

Depending on what they have been accused of and the severity of it. If you consume content from an unsavory person, do it because you enjoy the content, not because it's controversial to like them.
There's also a factor of old content compared to recent actions of someone. I mean, 2007 Kanye is a different person than 2024 "ye" (to be far, he hasn't put out a good album since 2013) but I'm not going to be singing the praises of a guy who is glazing up Hiter just because he made some good songs over 15 years ago.

I mean if the person goes against your moral standing and beliefs why would you watch someone like that , give somebody who you don't align with money? Hell nah manI make your stance clear on topics so you know who you give your watch time its a valuable resource.

This thread will probably locked so here's my comment.

Could authors that passed away get cancelled at some point? Would it mean that any form of art should be monitored so only approved ones get released?

Maybe I'm going overboard but this is what some older dystopic books were talking about.

I have no horse in this race, but I do want to point out that there have been attempts to posthumously cancel John Wayne.

They already try doing that (without success of course) despite the fact that they keep milking these creators' works. Michael Jackson is the most famous example of that.

It really doesn't make sense to do that. If you go too far back in history we get to authors that have done really heinous things such as own slaves or kill people from other races or religions when it was more acceptable to do so.

It seems a bit redundant, trying to cancel someone that time has already ended imo.

That's too late to even attempt that.

Also I'd want to say that no longer re-releasing a movie after one main actor getting cancelled is kinda awful towards the rest of the staff who worked hard.

Imagine if you get penalised because of the mistake of someone you have worked with.

I like movies starring Charlton Heston but I didn't delve too much into his personal life but telling to never watch Ben Hur or Soylent Green is ridiculous.

I've always been confused about that debacle and while I'm not a big fan I just don't see what it would bring to tell everyone that listen to his music that he was problematic.

Also same thing with Jonny Depp even if the story has been concluded (yet Disney will never make another Caribbean Pirate movie ever).

The way of thinking millennia ago wasn't the same as today (and thankfully).

Same with last century authors having some obsolete ideas or viewpoint of life if you want.

I have read Starship Troopers' original novel after watching the movie and while it's mostly a military sci-fi I didn't really think of any major problematic things said in it despite hearing people telling that it was.

My stance on censorship is simple, if your religious text of choice is allowed in stores and schools why should any other book be banned then? All texts should be allowed to stand not as a challenge to morality of being put on display but to a challenge to people themselves that consume it.

On a side note I bloody hate Orson Scott Card's writing without even having to know he was a raging homophobe. Some stuff seeps through text without it being obvious.

Wasn't Johnny Depp slandered by Amber Heard? Or was there a different case against him?

Yeah. I didn't follow the full case but some people straight up stopped to review movies starring him because of that.

Jumping on conclusions isn't the best choice.

Agreed. I remember WWE coming under fire for this after unpersoning Chris Benoit years ago, as by doing so they also erased a chunk of Eddie Guerrero's WWE legacy indirectly.

Yea but Eddie is still seen and recognized as a hall of famer and still gets mentioned Chris not so much

This is just me, I've learned how to separate the art with the artist, if I like a work specifically due to the artist and their stands are against my principle, I stop following them, simple as that.
