This. Maybe sometimes you'll get a better translation later down the line, but with AI 99% of people won't bother now. "yea good enough". I know there was that big thing about Segagaga being mtl, but being overlooked by actual people. Problem i heard tho was that there was still weird obvious mistranslations
I didnt run into any.

The problem is that I have interest in the game. This "translation" offensive me, since it's disrespectful to:
1) game preservation
2) the original media
3) translators, as a whole

It's something I consider intolerable.

Then respectfully go eff off somewhere else

Respectfully, the problem is that people will see the game is machine translated and then not put in the effort to actually re-translate it. I get that it's faster to MTL, but even before the advent of AI, translators of manga/anime/games were telling people that "sniping" or seeing MTLs posted and then get popular made it harder for human translations to get off the ground/get teams together/finish/etc.

Im just sick of you guys constantly defending this GenAI crap. its only gonna lead to even more slop for this site.

Speaking only for myself, I wanted to offer alternative approaches. Whether suggestions or to share how I started to combat against MTL projects I was seeing back in mid 2010s. After all, if even as someone with marginal technical skills and some brief experience as an editor could put something out? What's to stop anyone else from making that happen? Actions will always speak louder than words, and especially so in a scene like this.

Just simply going after these projects won't stop them. If it didn't stop them back in the 2010s, when they were literally headache inducing to read and unanimously reviled quite openly mind you, how would now, when they're far closer to competency and have a greater degree of accessibility and ease of use, be any different? It hasn't in the scanlation scene, it's still prevalent in the visual novel scene, and it's only been increasing in this sphere.

Even if they stopped uploading MTL/AI projects, it won't stop them being made. The tools are out there, the desire to see something translated is out there, and there's a multitude of means to share it. As long as persistence and passion exist? People will find a way. I rather them be given a greater spotlight, not to shine but to be brought to attention so if someone wants to amend them with an actual translation? They can.

These projects should be inspiring more people to want to create better, more complete and competent projects. Not to simply argue. If they make you mad? Use that force for productivity and make something incredible happen!

bet you guys would just ignore the screenshots anyway and tell us "you're wrong, its fine. shut up"
There are two options. They actually already exist, but the anti-AI bros ignore them:

1 - ignore the game and move on
2 - respectfully say your opinion against AI, avoiding words like "disgusting" or "trash", because, surprise, a human worked on this thing for free, as a hobby. And he owns nothing to anyone here.

I genuinely don't understand how you guys can't see that you are the bullies, you are the bad guys, stop playing the victim card, AI is not the issue, you are.

Well said, and thank you for the contribution, actually you just gave me an idea, I may actually suggest it with the staff, but new rule, if you wanna complain about AI translation you either show screenshots of actually playing the game and the translation is genuinely bad or gtfo.

No one complaining has really any intention of playing, so i decided to play through the first scenario. From around 800 lines from my 45 minutes playthrough, there was maybe 15 that sounded weirdly translated. I counted.

Everything else is fully understandable and conveys the intended emotion and context.

Game is pretty good, i'll keep playing.

I can speak, as a fan of the source material, that people complaining are liars/crybabies, that like to virtue-signal against AI and, if it depended on my input, would be banned the moment they mentioned anything similar to "AI bad", as it (almost) always comes from a place of hypocrisy and ignorance.

The whole "translation is art!" or "game preservation matters!" or "think of the community!" sounds so much like empty worlds to me, when it comes from the mouth of freeloaders.

I don't mean to offend anyone, because i think everyone is entitled to their opinions AS LONG as they keep it respectful, civil, and know that boundaries exist.

But some people said they're "offended" by the translation 🤣🤣🤣 seriously, the social media for unemployed and privileged people is that way 👉🏻
They'll hear your complaints and agree in the echo chamber over there.

I was expecting something a little flat but usable, but a bunch of the lines in the first 15m aren't even coherent. It's AI-slop.

I ask you respectfully, if you have no interest in the game don't bully others who wanna play this and disregard the hard work of the people who worked on this, just don't play it, you're the awesome above us all, maybe move on to something a bit more productive? Just a friendly suggestion, thank you.

The translation is very bad, like you'd expect from AI. Grammar's a mess and lines just cut off randomly all over the place, but hopefully someone will pick this up and polish the translation at some point. At least the fact that it exists gives me hope.

You're going to say that and show no screenshot? Is that too much effort?

it took 30 years for getting an psp english translation for japanese speakers

also we do host bootlegs here as well, the concept of preservation does not exclude what one deems unworthy, that's how discrimination wars begin if I'm to be honest 😅
I think there's a difference between a bootleg that is preserved for posterity's sake versus "a copy of something made with the same quality as a bootleg" being preserved.

Again, like I said: I see the objective reasoning behind preserving things like this, but I also understand why people jump to the value-judgement of preserving MTL'd games in this current climate.

The key phrase in your post is "had horrendous machine translations". The MTL scripts being popped out by AI currently aren't anywhere near the same level of bad; they're just good enough to be playable in a way that a majority of people won't criticize because they're getting their dopamine hit of being able to play a game they couldn't play before.

There's a big--and I mean huge--difference in context. What this new generation of MTL'd scripts is offering, imo, is a double-edged sword. Fan translations now have a baseline to go off from, sure; but now the work facing fan translators is to both compare the original script against the MTL to make sure the MTL didn't make weird mistakes while also making sure their fan translation is its own "unique thing". It's less work in some respects but it's also more work in others, because translating and editing for readability are--imo--two different skillsets.

(Ex: the controversy/discourse surrounding Ted Woolsey's translations versus re-release translations versus literal translations versus preserving what gets lost in context vs fan translations trying to achieve a balance between all the aforementioned.)

Edit: I also want to add, just so people don't jump down my throat about it, that I have no problem with using a MTL as a base that a fan translator goes back over to edit for clarity/prose/voice/quality/etc. But I think, again, those are two very different skillsets and most MTL'd games I've played simply do not read better than a textbook or elementary-grade novel--even the game we're all posting about, here.

People really think you can just prompt an AI and it gives you a working, fully implemented script for the game, magically, seamlessly almost and required no other steps at all to get this to work as it is ::sailor-embarrassed

SRW Alpha had a similar issue to this game, apparently the script is implemented into the game for the characters in a way that you can't discern whom is speaking what dialogue. Also the script is massive in both games. So the idea that AI can translate this game at all is great. The flowery prose and editorialising and such would all need to be done by an actual person, but even as it is, I consider this to be the equivalent of watching old fan subs from east asia, I've to make some dialogue make sense in English as I read it, which is much better than not understanding anything at all.

I am just waiting on super robot wars alpha to be translated now and that's pretty much it for my bucketlist of games I really wanted to play that require a translation for full enjoyment.
