SNES Shadowrun (SNES) - When Cyberpunk invaded our cartridges

I love how they built (then signalled) their own debug/cheat mode right into the game.

You see that single, flickering street light and immediately know something's off, either because it's a great environmental detail or because it may turn out to be important later. I love that is both.

Hey, guys, do you think Cyberpunk 2077 has successfully achieved the same idea of a dystopian world as Shadownrun? Because honestly, I was also in the hype of the game and I bought it believing that I would have that teenage experience with Shadownrun but with the graphics and power of the new generation... I was super disappointed. Then the game got better, but...

I'm going to be honest, I attempted to play the Genesis version a few times over the years and never liked it. I had no idea the SNES version was different though, and seeing people talk about it has had me itching for giving it another go. It is my favourite tabletop game probably, so I guess I owe the retro video games another attempt.

I bought the new Shadowrun trilogy on sale recently. Still need to try it.
I meant to reply to this too, before. These modern SR games are quite good, in my experience.
I'd recommend them too like RageBurner has. They capture the feel of being a shadowrunner pretty well in the writing and vibe, and I really like some of the companion writing (the former punk singer in Dragonfall has always stood out to me, but I forget his name). The weakest thing about them I think is that there isn't much 'tactics' going on in the actual gameplay for me, but the RPG elements are really well done.

I think so, just in a different way. Much of the dystopian stuff in Shadowrun is a result of the magical fantasy elements going on in it, while Cyberpunk of course has none of that and is pure "high tech = low-life" dystopian hellscape. Just imagine Disney, but it's actually owned by a literal dragon and you can just be going for a walk one night and get your soul eaten by an insect spirit. Terrifying.

I think Deus Ex is the best cyberpunk game there is...

Shadowrun is more of urban fantasy mixed with cyberpunk, Cyberpunk 2077 its pure cyberpunk, they are quite different on world and vibe, they share the cyberpunk genre, but they are different in approach.

I think something that gets close to Shadowrun would be the light novel series Maou 2099, and the TTRPG Rifts (which has a lot of insane lore, so it can fit anything really).

I dont think Shadowrun is a dystopia to begin with.

There's some kind of karmic justice in that world where goblinisation and indian mastering shaman magic obliterates america's white supremacism, and humies are put back in their place as pawns in the games of dragons and old gods. It's violent fantasy cyberpunk but magic gives hope to that world, far less nihilistic than Cyberpunk 2020 or Berlin XVIII.

Not exaggerating, Shadowrun, (well, and other things) made me interested in visiting Seattle, Washington. I've been to the space needle, but unfortunately I couldn't recruit any hackers there. They just had an overpriced restaurant and a gift shop at the top. All of the cities in the Genesis version are real neighborhoods in the Seattle area. The SNES version abandoned the Seattle flavor of the game, which was kind of disappointing to me.

They also didn't have any mod shops. I was really looking forward to the cybernetic claws.
All I can think about now is Niles and Frasier talking about clashing street samurai ruining their chance to attend the opera that night.

But but but... You're a mage with your pointy hat and stuff. You'd loose essence...
Embrace the way of the burnout, brother.

Depending on the edition, losing maybe a point of essence for some sweet hand razors may not be too bad outside of RP reasons, of course.

The armored skin would be nice.
Dermal plating is pretty sick, and would probably be the least nightmarish of recovery time realistically compared to some of the other options. It also doesn't damage your soul that much (I think it was like rating x 0.5 in 4 at least).

That reminds me I only played the first of the modern PC trilogy. I should give the others a look. It would be awesome to have a procedural mission module or something, too.

They're linear but they're well written. I've played them for the story and the setting.

The combat is XCom "lite" IIRC, if you really dig that you'd get procedural missions and mods in a true XCom game IMO.

Oh well, it seems some brave modder got procedural missions for the last Shadowrun games as well... Maybe it could be fun to reinstall and try this all.

It's mostly User Generated Content that was going in the direction of procedural stuff. No idea if it ever got off the ground. I don't have the patience for X-Com, to be honest.

Yeah I get it. I bought the last X-Coms with all the bells and whistles DLCs but I've not played a lot.

I think what I want to play next are the old Syndicate games, and finish them at last. And get around to properly play Satellite Reign.

I quite like Shadowrun Hong Kong, it did feel like a good break from western settings, and it was cool to see how Asia is faring in that world.

I do recommend playing the Harebrained trilogy in release order, that way you can appreciate the QoL changes as you go from game to game.

In my opinion, no. Cyberpunk 2077 doesn't have the right vibes at all. The game has a really weird "hello fellow kids" vibe, like a 60 year old rock fan in a leather jacket trying to relate to the youth at a college party. The visual vibe and the writing really, really didn't do it for me and the game felt like it completely missed the mark and had no identity. I also couldn't stand V's dialogue options and the way he/she was performed and written, just a really meathead character that had me cringing hard no matter what dialogue option I picked. The whole game feels like it has weird awkward translation layer over everything where it feels like either the dialogue was originally written in Polish or that English wasn't any of the writers native languages. I was very disappointed in Cyberpunk 2077, very soulless feeling game and even after all the patches and DLC it's incredibly buggy.

It absolutely feels like a spiritual successor to Nightshade
Same Beam dev team (and same ending gag promising a sequel), better execution (mostly). Sadly less flavor text, and plenty of feels-rushed bugs towards the end.

Shadowrun gave me nightmares as a kid. We would rent SNES games pretty regularly, and that one time I spotted Shadowrun on the shelf. That cover art was so cool, so I begged my dad to rent it, which he did reluctantly.

So we pop the game in that night and start playing, and that intro at the morgue, with the two guys screaming in horror at the sight of you, was something I had never seen in a game before. Keep in mind, most games then were like power fantasies, with NPCs kissing your ass the whole time, so that horrified me. On top of that, the character portraits were so gritty and grotesque, compared to your more traditional anime cuties. The music was also quite of a downer, I thought.

The whole thing gave me the creeps, and I let my dad play while I was - I kid you not - covering my eyes when he was talking to NPCs. Them mfers looked downright creepy.

Yep.

I believe it must have scared some children back then. I didnt play as a kid, i played it in the second half of the 90's, already almost an adult. Didnt finish it at the time but finished it in the emulator. ::thumbsupwario
