RIP Windows 10

What Linux distros would you recommend for beginners?
Linux Mint, Zorin, Manjaro?

RIP Windows 10.

Well I try to install arch and still had cons...
Why don't you try with another distro like Linux Mint to see if it works.
Or you could install Windows 11 and try to debloat it.
There's some tricks to install it with a local account too.

I made the complete jump to Linux last week for my main PC, I have already used Linux, mostly with Debian based servers, I am used to troubleshooting games (a skill you get if you like abandonware), and I already used FOSS for most utility programs like office (Libreoffice) or image editing (GIMP and Krita).

I personally went with CachyOs, arch based, I don't mind it being a little opinionated, literally handled annoying setup busywork with 1 click, and its the sweet spot of performance and stability I want, so yeah I am quite happy with my decision.

Most people who don't wanna move on from Windows 10 are delaying the issue, at one point it will become completely unsupported, could be far into the future sure, but its going to happen, at this point, if you don't want Windows 11, instead of jumping through hoops to delay the inevitable, just move to Linux, the earlier you do, the more time you have to get used to Linux, which you will have to do anyway at one point if you don't wanna move to Windows 12, or whatever they come up with in the future.

Well you learn something new with Linux everyday... you install Ubuntu your whole drive gets corrupted you install manjaro and you get a white screen coming out of nowhere.... now I see why debloating windows 11 is worth it in my case.... fuck 🐧 s....

By the way, is this possible to store the OS on an USB key?

So considering I've been doing the LTSC IoT Enterprise trick for awhile now, I think I'll be good for some time (January 13 2032 is when the ESUs finally stop). The one advantage of that is hardware manufacturers ending mainstream OS support means I could make a "best final build" in a few years here. Once the ESUs stop I'd just disconnect it from the internet and have it be a static gaming machine (assuming I'd be that paranoid in the first place).

That being said, I have been using FreeBSD by way of GhostBSD. I personally prefer those over Linux as there's only a few versions to pick from instead of an array of distros to pick from (GhostBSD is just FreeBSD with a out of the box desktop experience). The other main reason being the fact that virtualization is integrated directly into the kernel.

From what I can tell it should make GPU passthrough easier than on Linux. Seems like an easier/more stable option than trying to mess around with WINE and Proton (and Steam is out of the question since I don't use that). Good video about GPU passthrough via FreeBSD here:

Also, fun fact: The very last iteration of Windws 7 (Windows Embedded POSReady 7) just ended support last year (October 8, 2024) for the ESU program. I'd say I'll probably make a Windows 7 machine but realistically I'll just run it through the FreeBSD passthrough.

Long term though, I'll be moving away from pretty much all future Microsoft products. I don't trust them not not fuck up every previous/future product made. How they've turned Windows 11 into a fully AI'd OS after forcing so many off of Windows 10 tells me how they'll be moving forward even after the bubble pops (Xbox as a cloud-only ecosystem comes to mind).

When I've tried to setup Debian I couldn't setup partions so I was wondering why.
hmmmmm that odd.... what's your storage?

I jumped to Linux in 2020, Windows has been dead for me for years at this point. I distro hopped for a bit, but settled on EndeavourOS a few years ago an never looked back, literally Arch with a UI installer.

For anyone wanting to give Linux a try, I would probably recommend Fedora or Bazzite (Based on Fedora, but oriented towards gaming). You can def try EndeavourOS if you don't mind some stepper learning curve. I find their forums to be very useful the few times I had to solve anything.

Zorin is good, I installed it in my grandparents' pc and they got used to it quite fast. The UI is basically gnome with a bunch of extensions on top of it that make it feel more like w10. Not sure if I would recommend it over Fedora for normal use other than browser though.

And now they will come out with Windows 13 Ultimate A.I. Edition!

Windows 12 wont exist

Oh wait, no.

I have one internal SSD drive but two external HDD ones.

You cannot use the USB key as the main drive?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo you can't use the usb as a main drive... you can't install a installation inside a usb. so install your ssd or hdd with your usb (install program inside your key usb.

I've seen people recommending installing Ventoy on an empty USB flashdrive, then you can just put several 'live images' of Linux distros you want to test, and boot them from the USB drive.
And then if you like to install them from there to an SSD or HDD.

Welp, time for me to buy a new drive for Linux then.

I'd try it thanks.

Alternatively you can perform the install in a Virtual Machine and see how you like it
